Former UMD RA here. If you want to actually start a dialogue about this, don't try and put up posters to counter this or just do something local to your hall (these posters are given to every single RA on campus). Your RA doesn't give a shit either, we're given a pack of posters and we put them up because it's part of our job, we have no authority, and we just want our free room and board. If you tear down the poster, vandalize it, or put up your own, you just create a headache for us having to talk to our boss about it and you don't change jack shit.

You know what the craziest thing is... I have yet to meet a women who has said to me that asking for a kiss, or asking for sex is attractive. In fact they tell me asking has the opposite effect. They have always said to me, it is just supposed to 'happen'.

I wrote this up as an email to send to the manager of the Department of Resident Life. What do you guys think? Anything I should add or change?

Recently I was helping a fellow terp move into their new room in Oakland hall on Friday August 30th, 2013. I walked into the main lobby in front of the service desk, and a certain poster hung on one of the pillars caught my eye. As I walked over to inspect it I was very offended by some of the language used in the poster because of its very gendered attitudes towards men and male sexuality. For reference to which poster I'm discussing, here is a link to an image taken of it. http://i.imgur.com/TVsLmQv.jpg

Specifically, I found the phrases "Man up. Get consent", the poster stating that rape is a "men's issue" and implying that men are the only ones who need to discuss this issue is very degrading to my gender. I also find problem with the supposition that only men rape women and only men must get consent as misleading of truth and real human interaction. Now while I understand rape is a very important and serious problem on college campuses, I would like to pull your attention to a CDC summary report released in 2010 for the National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey. (A PDF of the information can be found on the CDCs website or from this link: http://www.cdc.gov/violenceprevention/pdf/nisvs_report2010-a.pdf) On pages 28 and 29 we see summary statistics of 2 factors. Female victims of rape, and male victims of forced penetration. In both of these statistics we see in a 12 month period almost 1:1 parity of female victims of rape and male victims of forced (vaginal) penetration by a woman on a man. (The technical definition of rape can not be fully applied to men as they do not have vaginas so I chose forced to penetrate as it involves the same anatomical parts.) This almost certainly shows that in similar circumstances (a penis forcibly entering a vagina or a vagina forcibly enveloping a penis) there is almost equal use of coercion or lack of consent on both female and male parties.

Therefore I would like to ask that more gender neutral language be used in these posters where it does not say the above phrases in a fashion to place blame on only men as perpetrators of rape, and only females as victims of it. I would like to have posters that emphasize the fact that all parties should get consent and that the onus is not solely on the male to do so. Have the posters state this is not just a "men's issue". And that the "man up" and other gendered terms used in these posters be removed entirely as they imply similar things as above.

As a recent graduate, I have and still do feel very close to the university and its community as a whole. I enjoyed my time at Maryland and have always felt that I could trust the university with my best interests. These recent posters though worry me and I feel somewhat put off from my encounter with them. If you could provide me with any help with this issue or perhaps point me in the direction of someone who could if you are unable to, I would be extremely appreciative of that fact.

Everyone take responsibility for their actions. If you get drunk and have sex you wouldn't have sober, that is 100% entirely your fault. Even if your partner was sober. They may be an asshole, but it is your own damn fault for knowingly altering your brain to make it incapable of regular logical thought. Don't act like there is any other reason for getting drunk off your ass anyway than so you can overcome normal social inhibition and give in to your sex drive.

I guess the culture is a little different in Sydney. Most of my friends are pragmatic - it isn't so much that men don't get assaulted, or that all men are criminals (insane); rape is one of many ways women have been oppressed throughout history. Again, not exclusive to women, nor heteros. It is more openly discussed that women are the targets of rape. For example, if a child were molested (by another child/teen/adult), you wouldn't tell the victim/survivor to stop dressing a certain way, you would reprimand the attacker. When alcohol is involved, there's a difference between slurring and passing out. In any case, if you were in that situation, whether you were on a bender, or you had two glasses of red, no means no. That's all there is to it.

I think this was the result of a survey done a few years ago that said that 1 in 7 (or some such high statistics) college males had sex without the girl's consent. From what I saw resulting from that was an ad campaign about not joking about rape with your bros. Still kinda similar, but a statistic like that would explain the gender targeting a bit. I'm egalitarian, so I don't like the language of either ad btw.
