Men have higher standards for LTR because it generally has to be monogamous as they can only offer parental investment to one family at a time.

Whereas for STR, men are not offering parental investment, they can do this more often and so quality is not as important.

I think in general men will lower their standards on looks for casual sex. They won't so much for serious relationships. Women will do the opposite.

Men who can't get any form of casual sex unless they lower their standards to a point where their penis won't get erect, of course, will have to give commitment or be sexless. If they feel they're both lowering their standards in looks and having to commit to a fullblown relationship just to get sex, I'd say they may not be being realistic about where they really stand in terms of attractiveness. If it's all you can get, it is your standard.

Same for women if they feel they can only get commitment and decent treatment from men they consider below their standard. If those are the only ones you can get, those men are your standard.

It's different for both sexes. Females would rather go without than settle. A man on the other hand, would obviously take any opportunity to get laid with a female as long as he thinks she's in the reasonable looks department. Well in some cases yes. My gf currently is gorgeous and I'm lucky to date her in that sense, but also has interest/aspirations in life. Some gorgeous girls are very bland and in a relationship are just outright terrible, but there are a chunk of gorgeous women that just go through life normally with aspirations and don't cling to their looks.

Sex is only 30% of a relationship, getting a 9/10 means nothing if the rest of the relationship sucks. You are dooming yourself to failure if you put up with it just so you can show people her face.

Maybe lower their unrealistic/impossible standards? And that depends from women to women. For ex. I could wait and wait to get a Chris Evans type or I could think the Tom Holland types are handsome too. But probably wouldn't lower my standards to the Seth Rogan type. (Note: these are just examples. I personally think all 3 men are handsome). So I would still end up with someone I find super attractive (+assuming they meet other reasonable standards I have).

Or I could just continue to wait for the Chris Evans type if I feel that I won't settle for anyone else. I personally think I'd be single a lot longer but it's not like I haven't been successful though since I work hard enough to look better and be better.

That's true.

Literally every person on Earth settled (or will settle) for something which was less than their idealization (given that ideal people/ jobs/ lifestyles don't exist).

That's already a compromise/ the lowering of a standard, on and by itself.

People do so because everyone has needs, and such needs typically won't be fulfilled by fantasies.

The thing is that some people are more "needy" than others. That need can be for attention, love, sex, or whatever. The more needy they are, and thus the more "aggressive" they are on their search for what they want, the more they're going to lower their initial standards.

The more partners one wants to have/ the quicker he or she wants to find one, the lower they'll be willing to hit.

As time goes by, people can either become more mature and feel better with themselves (which will reduce needness and raise standards) or become more desperate (since they'll likely want to settle for someone and the options become fewer and fewer as one ages; maybe they will notice they set their standards "too high" on the past).
