When I was 25, I was in a relationship with a 35 year old divorced man. He bought up the subject of marriage and casually mentioned he intended to propose with the same engagement ring he had given his ex wife. I nervously said I would prefer my own ring and he shrugged and said he wouldn't bother proposing then. Thankfully, I had enough sense to see how awful and cheap he was and I ended it not long after.

This reminds me of a shitty rebound I had.
He had a daughter with an ex that that was stillborn, so they had a son almost immediately after. I guess they decided to get married, but they didn't because she supposedly cheated on him. This guy still had her wedding dress in the spare closet. When I met him his son was 8. I asked why was he holding on to it. He said, "Because I paid for it. "
He also still had the tackiest ring imaginable from a different previous engagement, he asked if I wanted it, and I broke out in a fit of laughter.

Let's start with the fact that this man took the engagement ring back from his ex-wife after the marriage ended. Tells you all you need to know about that scrote.

IMO this is really dependent on the situation. There are some truly lovely heirloom rings out there, my great grandmother’s ring was really beautiful (and then my uncle gave it to his first wife who lost it a few months into their engagement ugh). I also think that if he has sisters, they should get first dibs on the ring because they’re related by blood to the original owner, but I might be biased because my mom had her heart set in her grandma’s ring before my uncle took it and lost it. There are also a lot of dinky rings, my dad’s mom’s ring for example basically looked like bent up aluminum foil. I think if the marriage was successful and loving for the duration of the relationship and the ring is not a piece of crap it’s a nice gesture. Otherwise, it might be a nice gift as just regular heirloom jewelry, but not as the ring that is going to symbolize your marriage.

I agree with this. I've seen a lot of awkward situations unfold where something happens to the couple, and then this heirloom jewelry is now in essentially another family.

I actually quite like the tradition of passing on a family ring, but; i also think that the only way that would be okay for me, is if the marriage it came from was a very happy one.
I'm not superstitious (really), but it seems like a bad idea to me if you accept a ring when the person originally wearing it wasn't actually happy in their own partnership. It seems like a bad omen tbh.
[–]justanothergirl4278FDS Newbie 104 points105 points106 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I completely agree with this. Also, what I like about getting a ring that’s been in the family for generations is the fact that if the grandmother or mom gave it to my (future) husband, it’s a strong sign they love and welcome me into the family. I doubt a mother would give their son the family ring to someone they hated seeing him with.
[–]PeengwinFDS Newbie 19 points20 points21 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I agree, plus there needs to be the option for the woman to say "no thanks, I'd rather have a ring thats my own." My ring was my husband's grandmother's, but 1. It's a very good quality diamond and platinum ring 2. I also made it my own by adding in additional stones/design 3. I don't think everyone gives that much of a shit about showing off a ring/supporting debeers. 4. The grandparents had a happy marriage

Another trap in accepting a family heirloom is it's often seen as a loan, not a gift like a genuine engagement ring. So much pressure to return it if things go south. Then it's recycled for the next woman fitting into the blank space marked wife?
[–]NotSoSmartChickFDS Newbie 76 points77 points78 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
This right here. Especially if there’s no children to pass the ring to, you’d definitely be expected to return the ring.

My friend gave her boyfriend HER grandmas ring and said she wanted to get married ! I was a bridesmaid at their wedding and the Groom made a joke about how he never even proposed. So embarrassing.
[–]EluniaeFDS Newbie 123 points124 points125 points 5 years ago (12 children) | Copy Link
A certain youtuber/influencer last year made a video about how she offered her boyfriend her grandma’s ring asking him to use it to propose to her when he was “ready” (she also gave him a deadline). My mind is still trying to compute how that works. They’re married now, though.
[–]VioletRomanticFDS Newbie 63 points64 points65 points 5 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
So wait, she wants him to propose with a ring that was ALREADY HERS? She just gave him this family heirloom and was like "Yo, ask me when you're ready." Like how much more can you hold his hand before you're just the one doing the proposing?
[–]JasmineAndClovesFDS Newbie 13 points14 points15 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I also have a friend that did this. She actually went through the trouble of having her grandmother’s ring reset and then she just presented it to her boyfriend and basically instructed him to propose. He did, but he later admitted it was only because he was having so much anxiety about carrying around this heirloom diamond and knowing that both she and her family were expecting a proposal.
[–]EluniaeFDS Newbie 31 points32 points33 points 5 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
Yes that’s exactly how it happened. And yeah funny that you mention her proposing, because she actually initiated the proposing by going down on one knee and giving him a keyring, then a while after that gave him her grandma’s heirloom and told him it’s now his turn. She tries to rationalize it as feminist gesture and how a man proposing doesn’t mean anything to her, but I feel like if that were real she wouldn’t have manipulated him into re-proposing the way she did.
Her name is Hannah Witton, if you want to watch her talk about it in detail.
[–]VioletRomanticFDS Newbie 16 points17 points18 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
If it didn't mean anything to her she wouldn't have made a whole spectacle of it... That's really sad, like I hope now that they're married and everything she's happy, but idk. If you have to manipulate someone into being with you they didn't really want to be there and maybe you shouldn't force it. And acting like it was empowering and trying to get others to back you up and applaud you for it can cover up how much it stings that this person you love doesn't love you back and want to be with you in the same way for a while, but thats not a foundation to build a marriage on.
[–]Mind-Objective 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link

Actually the only reason she got married so quickly was that so she could start trying for a child, according to her. She’s worried about her fertility decreasing with further health treatments related to her UC so it’s not like she really has a choice.

Me and my fiance are both broke students working towards high value careers. We're leveling up together and I love that. My grandparents marriage lasted 78 years and was a very happy one. I am an only child, and my cousins were all married already by the time my grandma passed away so there was nobody else in my generation for it to go to.
I knew I wanted a diamond but have serious issues with the ethics of diamonds (no judgment on anyone else, it's purely personal - I feel the same way about fur; I'll wear vintage or heirloom but won't buy new) and didn't want to wait years for us to both be out of school and debt free before looking at rings. When we told my mom we were going to get engaged, she offered us the ring (her mom's ring) and we accepted. He had it professionally cleaned and had the settings tightened before proposing. It's a beautiful ring and just my size and style, and I actually love having my grandma's ring on my hand, since it is so personal for both of us and I miss her. I don't think this is shitty. Am I deluding myself? Tell me the truth.

[–]KateJ1982FDS Newbie 5 points6 points7 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
It's not really about the ring, if you love the family heirloom then that's great. It's about the effort he is putting in. Did he put effort into the proposal to make it special for you? Does he plan things and do things he thinks you will like just for you? Is he treating you with kindness and respect and generally looking for ways to show you (and the rest of the world) that he values you?
A nice ring is one way for a man to show he values the woman he is proposing to. But there are thousands of other ways as well.
[+]LevelTurbulent -8 points-7 points-6 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
I think you're deluding yourself. I had one of those equal partnership marriages where we built together too. I'm divorced now.
Why didn't he care enough to get you a ring? Especially if you don't even like diamonds, frankly that makes it cheaper. He discussed getting engaged with you, told your mom, but never bothered to buy a ring?
Oh, he's a poor student. Right, so he never spends money on anything? He wears donated clothes and eats at food banks and sleeps in a tent on the corner? No way for him to ever save a dime to get you a ring? Bull. If you he wanted to he would, he didn't want to.
If you marry him you'll be a starter wife. He'll get established in his high value career and decide he deserves a younger woman rather than someone his own age. And he'll throw in your face that he didn't even want you enough to buy you a ring, are you delusional?! Of course he didn't love you, your mommy had to get the ring.
And I know I sound bitter but I've been watching all the starter wives get chucked for years and it finally happened to me too. This is a huge red flag. Look for others. And if you do go into this, always know that you'll probably get chucked too. It's more common than not for people who get together young, especially if the man becomes successful.
[–]LevelTurbulent 11 points12 points13 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
He'll use that against her when he leaves her. He'll throw it in her face and make her feel like the dumbest person on Earth and tell her how he never wanted her or loved her at all.
I wish I didn't know that but with what I've seen, that's how that typically plays out. He knows he always has that out and can devastate her with it, he even joked about it at their wedding. I feel bad for her.
[–]Vmwvi73 points 5 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
I always wondered how that train of thought worked. Are you going to steal one of the most important symbols of your grandparents' love for each other (assuming they're part of the small percentage that are happily married and still alive) or are you going to rob your dead grandmother once she's dead because you're too cheap to buy a ring? And even if you obtain it legitimately, why would you want memories of a DEAD family member permanently cemented into your relationship. It's an easy way out of any effort (no money, no thought, no time, no effort). Do you expect someone to be honoured at being cast as grandma 2.0? Honestly.

I have my grandmother wedding ring, given to her by my grandfather who had many, many affairs. He’s been dead for at least 30 years and to this day, I have new aunts and uncles coming out of the wood works thanks to DNA testing. After they divorced (in the 60s) my grandma had the ring melted down to a gold nugget pendent and placed it on a gold necklace. They had kids together so she would still see him a lot...and she would twirl that nugget, play with it, with her fingers to show off her work to him. Lol I am blessed to now wear it around my neck and play with it as the “fuck you” it was intended to be and to never take shit, especially from a man. Love that lil nugget ❤️

Unfortunately unpopular opinion: An engagement ring is a GREAT indicator of how much a man respects you. No, male lurkers, I'm not saying that you need to spend a certain amount, but 3 months salary is the standard and should be what you invest in a ring that your wife will wear for the rest of her life. You should also ASK your girlfriend what kind of ring she WANTS, don't fucking make it her birthstone or jasper or wood or moonstone or WHATEVER because you ~~~ think ~~~ that is what she'd like. Most women are afraid of being called gold diggers and will put up with your shitty ass nasty bubblegum machine ring, but everytime they look down at it and the .0001 carat cubic zirconia you spent $10 from Amazon on, do you really think they'll feel proud? Rant over lol. I'm sorry but if a man proposes to me with his mom's grandma's resin wood ring or whatever, I'm saying no.

Omg yes! I have a friend that got engaged and I was so uncomfortable when she showed me the ring and she told me it was his grandma’s: it was a nice ring but it was tarnished, dull and looked like it had been sitting in a drawer for decades. Like wtf the dude couldn’t even take it to the jewelers to get cleaned, polished and whatnot before he jammed it on her pretty finger...I didn’t say anything cos I’m her friend and he does seem to really love her but still. It’s a shame because it was a nice ring with good quality stones and all he had to do was give it a spit shine as it were and he couldn’t even do that 😓
[–]toredtimetravellerFDS Newbie 39 points40 points41 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
He was lazy and cheap. If he cared enough about the thought and value of giving her his grandma's ring he should've took it to the jeweler and prepare it for the proposal. Not just take it out of where it was hidden for decades and put it on her. This made it seem more like a cheap easy solution than an actually valuable precious gift to give to a special loved one.

This is so true though. I don't find it romantic at all, in fact it's quite cheap and disrespectful. To assume that a woman would want to wear a mans gaudy family heirloom for the rest of her life just because it's significant to him... yet has 0 sentimental value to her. No thanks. Every woman deserves her own unique ring.
[–]dancedance_83 49 points50 points51 points 5 years ago (15 children) | Copy Link
I used to think it was romantic that a man would give the woman his grandmother’s ring or an heirloom ring. I think it depends on if grandpa got a fucking ROCK for grandma, though it’s probably not as likely considering the time frame. I think a nice compromise would be something like what Prince Harry and Meghan did, she chose a few stones out of Princess Diana’s collection of (rich af people) jewels and had a custom ring.
Which brings me to pivot: Prince William’s wife, Kate Middleton, has his mother’s GORGEOUS engagement ring. Obviously that marriage was a sham and a half. And also, Prince William is pretty LV himself. Idk. Just my thoughts.

[–]dancedance_83 60 points61 points62 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
They are? I haven’t seen any posts about Kate or Meghan yet, tbh. Do you have a couple threads?
IMO both Kate and Meghan are fine, but their goals are different. I honestly think Kate could’ve done better than Will since she was strung along by Will for a decade but the reward was Queen Consort. I get it. I do not get the Meghan hate at all.
And to clarify, the sham and a half was Charles and Diana’s marriage.
[–]jackrusselterror1 33 points34 points35 points 5 years ago* (11 children) | Copy Link
I think that’s based on FDS principles though. Kate Middleton stuck with William way longer than she should have, waiting a decade for a proposal usually means he is settling and decided that he can’t find better, which doesn’t bode well for their future together. I’d never recommend wasting ten years on a man, so why would I or any other FDS person use her as a good example? Whereas Meghan and Harry had a normal timeline and he seems to adore his wife by the actions he’s taken.
To clarify I don’t hate Kate Middleton, I just don’t recommend repeating her actions and expecting any results. Any personal opinion I have about celebrities falls outside the scope of the subreddit unless it’s about relationships or HV qualities, and I’m reluctant to comment about the latter given how much public image management celebrities do.
[–]ferociouslycuriousFDS Newbie 24 points25 points26 points 5 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
Kate could have chosen to wait because life is a lot freer before joining the monarchy. Maybe she wanted a chance to live a little before commitment. There’s a lot you can’t see from here in the cheap seats.
[–]jackrusselterror1 12 points13 points14 points 5 years ago* (3 children) | Copy Link
I guess, but why is that relevant to the FDS subreddit or 99.99% of the world? My point is that we are not Kate and waiting a decade for a proposal doesn’t work out for the average woman- either you get dumped not engaged, or you waste your time with a man who doesn’t want to be with you. I don’t recommend relying on winning the lottery, that doesn’t mean there aren’t people who beat the odds, but I wouldn’t use them as an example for an early retirement subreddit, and I’d point out the statistics every time I saw a commentator post about them and caution anyone who decided to invest in the lottery as an actual strategy.
[–]ferociouslycuriousFDS Newbie 4 points5 points6 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
I’m not saying any of us should wait. I’m saying she has extremely different circumstances than us. Personally I would despise being in her position. I’m 46 and securely in the single-for-rest-of-my-life camp. But accepting a proposal before you’re ready? Just as not cool as waiting for a man.
[–]jackrusselterror1 3 points4 points5 points 5 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link
See if you’re right and she needed a decade to live her life before joining the royal family, I can understand that on an individual basis. I hope that was the case for her. I’m not advocating at all for accepting a proposal that you don’t want. I’m just pointing out what I’ve seen other commenters bring up in threads about this subject about why they’re pro-Meghan but not really that supportive towards Kate. That’s what the comment I replied to asked.

I think if he's thinking about doing this he should ask first, and spend what he's saved on something else to celebrate the engagement. It's not just the thought that counts, it's the investment.

It's all about the value. 1. Ring value - what's the insured price of this baby? 2. The VALUE you have to the man
If his nana's ring is a precious heirloom and he knows you like the style, or he takes it to get it modified into a style and SIZE you like, then great! I'm a fan of vintage rings in general. And have no issue wearing anothers ring. But preferably still estate sale purchase, not family loaner.
If it's third aunt removed, Petunia's, .25 carat, rinky dink 2nd marriage ring, his momma gave him because she don't even like you and doesn't want her son investing in you either. RUN. Its lazy, low value, and won't even fit on your pinky.
You think he'd like it if you started feeding him from back alley dumpsters, or clothing him from donation bins? Same energy.

If anyone knows about guys that have been fuckboys for hundreds of years and about cursed items and why you shouldn't bring them into your home, it's Buffy Summers. She's had experience.🤣 So this tracks.

I have my grandmothers wedding and engagement ring. I have no intention of ever getting married but I still wear them because they are beautiful.

My friend is best friend’s with her ex-husband’s ex-wife. They were able to figure out that he used his grandmother’s wedding ring for both their marriages lol. The inside is incribed with, “love you, samuel” lmao.
