A big romantic gesture professing your love if you dont even really know that person is going to seem disengenuous. When I used to go to the gym with my cousin regularly, he'd often have girls walk up to him that he didn't even know and they would grab up on his biceps. Being direct works for me, but only by also being nonchalant. Basically: I ask her out when I start being attracted to her, if she says yes, cool. If she says no, I don't speak to her again (actually I have the rule of two. Ask her once, she can say no, ask her twice, ,if she says no, bye. Unless she offers another time, than thats fine).
