So, been speaking to some of the women I know, trying to understand this reaction some more.

Women and girls learn this fear from the related experiences of other women and girls. It's a real fear, a genuine emotion, that once they learn about it they carry with them and it gets triggered by darkness, being alone and being near men they don't know.

I'm remembering a little bit about my childhood since my son is 8 and he's been talking about he is scared of the dark and scared of the monster in the dark. He tells me if real and if I don't turn the light on it'll come to him at night... I remember when I was little I was really scared of the dark, light terrifyingly so, break down and cry if you turned the light off kind of scared.

Somehow women have managed to be like my eight year old son. And I'm fucking lost at how it's possible for that to happen. Now I'm not saying they don't have a genuine feeling of unease and fear, just like my son does and like I did. I grew out of it, even recalling it now isn't reminding me of the unease and fear. It's just making me chuckle.

As a dad I'm happy to go with my son in to the dark and look under the bed, and get him to join in looking too. He is coming alone like any kid does, sometimes he doesn't even know it's dark, we're just out in the winter and there are no lights and he danced along without a care in the world.

What I think women and girls have done is huddle together in the darkness and never face it. So they carry this unease with them into the future lives, and having never faced it they are constantly triggered by it. Now it's a little more complicated, because violence is really happening and people are being murdered and raped. But there is some clue to what women are actually feeling here.

May I remind you all that nearly all of you were scared of the dark and scared of being alone when you where children. Imagine that never went away... Imagine that was triggered over and over again by the media and social group and the constant reminder of the dark and being alone, a button being pressed non stop forever. I think I'd be a pretty terrified man if I had not conquered it when I was young.

Now I'm not trying to say women are children. But if you're a man and you're confused like I was, remember being scared of the dark and try to imagine what it'd feel like if you still had that same fear as an adult. Because from what I can tell, women have a fear much like that was for me.

We can't make people safer from random violence, it's impossible to predict and impossible to stop. But can we do anything for the women and girls in our lives to make the next generation have less fear....

I agree that this is a horrible situation . However I also fail to believe it actually happened. The whole story seems very contrived and 'overbearing masculine presence' just isn't something that gets said in real life. The whole post seems like a lazy attempt to stir the pot and get people angry.

It does need to be addressed that men face issues of discrimination, albeit in different forms to women. However, this post frankly seems intended to direct anger and disdain at women.

Men face issues and they're not being talked about, but it isn't helpful to anyone to engage in behaviour like this.

Obviously it's best to avoid these kind of situations but the extent of the experiences of harassment and threat that women do feel on a regular basis adds a grain of salt to the situation.

I mean clearly only a small percentage of men are the problem, and blanket discrimination is fucked up, but if you felt your safety being threatened, it's easier to be on the side of caution than risk unjust discrimination.

Nothing that happened here was ok, and it feels terrible to be treated as the villain, but it worth considering that this does arise from genuine fear as opposed to malice and vindictive prejudice.
