Way to devalue your brand and demean those women authors who are published on merit.

#everydaysexism

[–]ulthrant82 257 points258 points259 points 11 years ago (25 children) | Copy Link

That's the one part they are completely missing. Those women who are publishing work, or passing firefighters exams or getting STEM degrees are all being lumped in with all these less talented women who otherwise wouldn't have succeeded without special privilege. I feel sorry for those women who busted their asses to get ahead and do great things, and ultimately get lumped in with a bunch of cheaters who don't deserve to be there.

[–]SoundOfDrums 76 points77 points78 points 11 years ago (19 children) | Copy Link

But muh opresshun!

In all seriousness, this is the real issue. I had an issue with a previous employer who insisted I didn't "count" any non-white people's bachelor's degrees because they had so much extra support that wasn't available to white people. Granted this is the exception, but holy balls, what if women start having trouble getting promoted or hired because they are perceived to have not earned their qualifications?

[–]Dollar_thief 30 points31 points32 points 11 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

That's why feminists are pushing for equality of outcome, this way managers cannot stop women getting hired for jobs above their merit even if they wanted to.

It's a sneaky tactic and it will ruin our workplaces, imagine being a man in a male dominated industry see any women that joins the company get promoted simply to fill a quota, it's ridiculous and undermines all the hard work that men put in.

I'm all in favour of equality of opportunity, but that is not our reality, our reality is dealing with equality of outcome, and it's going to be a tough battle.

[–]SoundOfDrums 20 points21 points22 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Agreed. Equality of outcome is literally sexism. It's pathetic that "feminists" don't understand the simple logic. Or they subscribe to the sociology "definitions" rather than actual definitions.

[–]Jimmyx24 14 points15 points16 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Employer: "I'm sorry but we're looking for someone with a bit more experience in this field"
Women: "Sexist!"
Employer: "I never said it had to be a man. Could be a woman"
Women: "Then why not hire her? She's a woman!"
-.-

[–]ulthrant82 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Also, if you will be promoted simply to fill a quota you'll have no incentive to actually improve, whereas the men will have to work even harder due to less options available for them.. which would then theoretically over time make the men better than their female counterparts at the same job..

[–]slayerx1779 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Which would, likely, make them more frequently promoted and better paid.

And the viscious cycle continues.

[–]Ithinknotttt 9 points10 points11 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This is part of the toxicity the feminism on social media is generating in universities and elsewhere across America and Europe. Being white does not afford money, affluence, safety, etc. Being white will yield some benefits, but for example I grew up in Queens where I am consistently a minority among other ethic grouped whites and Hispanics. Since when did each Eurpoean ethnic group loose its difference. Being raised by different ethnic groups. For example in Queens county where I live whites are not the most wealthy group, but some of the poorest weather its Italian, Irish, German, Polish, etc.

[–]SirBrrr 15 points16 points17 points 11 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Huh. It's not like non white people can graduate with taking less classes or with a lower gpa, they just get more help with admission and financing. Personally I'm not convinced that's a good way to go about taking affirmative action into consideration. However, I completely agree with your point about women

[–]SoundOfDrums 19 points20 points21 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I left that job over that issue when they refused to hire someone because I didn't take that bias into account. All the degree got them was an interview, and she was the best candidate. The lady they hired ended up robbing them. Fun times.

Their point was about admission mostly I think. I got declined to a lot more schools than my wife did, and my high school GPA was .2 higher, and I missed 1 question on the SAT. She did pretty poorly on her SAT. She's a minority.

Regardless, I think it should come down the the percieved quality of work that you can expect out of someone, rather than other factors.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points9 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Sounds like this employer was just a racist and probably didn't want to hire non white people regardless.

[–]theseleadsalts 4 points5 points6 points 11 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

In all seriousness, this is the real issue.

No it's not. It's one thing to completely undermine your movement by handicap, and special treatment. It's another thing to "combat sexism", by being sexist. It's a great way of losing before you start.

That is the real issue here. Teaching people that that's the way to fix their problems. Perpetuating they same perceived behavior.

[–]SoundOfDrums 5 points6 points7 points 11 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

I think you misunderstood what I was saying. The issue with undermining your movement by handicap is that people will react accordingly, and then there's justified sexism. I agree with you 100%. It's a completely ineffective strategy. There are other problems with the handicap approach, as you've pointed out.

[–]theseleadsalts 5 points6 points7 points 11 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

I most likely should have said that it a more friendly way. I was agreeing, but pointing out the bigger issue as I see it.

[–]SoundOfDrums 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

It depends on perspective, I suppose. The biggest issue for women is the one I stated, and the biggest one for everyone is the one you stated. I should've been more clear. My bad. :)

EDIT: I'm glad we could have a civil discussion with a difference of opinion. I like you.

[–]theseleadsalts 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

The biggest issue for women is the one I stated, and the biggest one for everyone is the one you stated.

This is very clear, and true as well.

Happy redditing.

And people claim that r/MR is trash!

[–]ulthrant82 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Well, to be fair they are both arguing from the same side of the table, so it's understandable that they could be civil.

That being said, conversations like this one affirm my belief that the MRM largely gets a bad rap. You can comment here without fear of being attacked and a reasoned argument is actually welcomed, which is unfortunately rare. I've attempted to give counter point elsewhere to try and see where I might be wrong or ignorant in my beliefs, and some places can be quite aggressive when you bring up a thought that doesn't parallel their own.. :(

The thing about book publishers is that they are known to have a male gender bias to begin with so this, I don't see as unreasonable. JK Rowling published under a man's name to prove this. (I'm on mobile so I'm not going to go look for the link. Pls forgive me). Many publishers turn good books away for many stupid reasons all the time. It's not an indication of talent or no talent. It's not the same as ant STEM or other achievements. Art is a very biased culture. This is just one publisher. They can pick and choose what to publish. It doesn't mean that no other publisher will pick up books by men.

[–]ulthrant82 5 points6 points7 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It was actually more of a famous name bias than a gender bias..

http://the-artifice.com/jk-rowling-can-not-escape-harry-potter-the-unbreakable-vow/

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Publishers have a bias towards authors that they know will sell lots of books.

If you want to get rid of bias, then you make a rule that each manuscript only be identified by a serial number, and then it's impossible to judge it based on anything other than quality.

They can pick and choose what to publish.

Except if it can be proven that the basis of what they decide to publish is gender (which they just admitted). Then I'm pretty sure that's an illegal form of discrimination

[+]therearedozensofus12 -7 points-6 points-5 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yeah, I don't see a problem with this either. It's not like it's Penguin Books, it's a very small publishing house trying to draw attention to a well known issue.

[–]apullin 6 points7 points8 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I think you have to put a slash before it for the hash sign to show up:

Couldn't have said it better myself. When will the western world learn that empowerment of all humans = the empowerment of women? The second favoritism rears it's ungodly face we rational few are forced to once again compensate or find ourselves drowning in yet another debate of who gets what and whether that "what" is deserved. I'm tired of compensating. All men and women and trans or little people or whatever you were born as or define as--all of us are fucking people. The western world has a hard on for identity segregation under the guise of equality. Just because we're different aesthetically does not mean that I or you should be imbued with special rights. We play for the same fucking team folks. That is all.

This is brilliant viral marketing, nothing more.

Let's provide some unbeatable logic to counter the claim that there is a gender bias in book publishing. So if we ever were to discuss this in real life with a person supporting this, it won't be a "well i think you're wrong" "yeah? I think you're wrong!".

Now I assume the feminists are only looking at the top layer and seeing that there are more books published by men than by women. Are there more male authors which correctly correlates with the amount of books published? Anybody know?

[–]StonedAthlete69 16 points17 points18 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Harry Potter, the hunger games, divergent and twilight are very popular book series right now, all were written by women.

[–]Black_caped_man 13 points14 points15 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Lets not forget the 50 Shades series either.

(Though I would certainly love to)

Just like almost every other field where a direct, quantifiable product is involved... Surprise surprise.

[–]TechnoSam_Belpois 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Exactly.

It's funny that they didn't specify that they specifically wanted to combat a gender bias in favor of males, they just wanted to combat all gender bias. So they do this by instituting a gender bias.

[–]Youareabadperson6[🍰] 290 points291 points292 points 11 years ago (17 children) | Copy Link

Seems like a good way to get sued. Male submits a story, denied, sue that he was denied on basis of gender, has proof positive that policy exists to exclude him on basis of his gender.

[–]Noclipper 53 points54 points55 points 11 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

That only applies for "bona fide job qualifications." If a resturant advertises themselves as having attractive female waitresses, then being an attractive female is part of the job.

To a customer, an author is just a name on a book cover. They could likely legally demand that male authors use a female nom de plume, but being female can't reasonably be a required attribute to write what they want written.

[–]gidonfire 16 points17 points18 points 11 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

Just to fuel the discussion though, what if the book publisher claimed it's focus is selling books written by women, so being a female author is part of the job.

The author is no longer just a name on a book, but the gender matters too.

I kind of want to see this go to court to see the outcome.

Would it be ok to have a book publisher have a men's only month?

What about a month of only publishing books written by African children who have undergone sex changes?

[–]sdfkhashhhahasdd 26 points27 points28 points 11 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

What if my office claimed its focus is on only employing old white men?

[–]gidonfire 9 points10 points11 points 11 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link

One could argue that the author's gender is required because feminists won't buy books written by men?

Then you could argue that investors won't invest unless your board room looks like pale death?

This is why I'd like to see this in court. I want to see professionals argue this and see what they come up with to support their idea. I never did debate club, but watching that FBI woman try to defend back door'ing cell phones to congress was fascinating.

Edit: She testifies first, it starts right at the introductions, swearing in, then her testimony first:

https://youtu.be/zk78_zmH4QI?t=535

the whole session is amazing though. the idea is shot down so hard it's amazing they even asked.

[–]LurkerOrHydralisk 5 points6 points7 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

If you can say investors backing out is a reason to allow not hiring men, I can say it's a reason to only hire old white men

[–]Vegemeister 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Hah. It's pretty likely that whatever malware Conley got on his computer is still there.

[–]ulthrant82 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Then it would get really noisy outside your office.

[–]SoundOfDrums 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

A lot of grumbling, and having food stuck in the corners of their mouths, too.

[–]MonsterBlash 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Will they accept book by men who identify as female?

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points10 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Hooters can hire based on looks and gender because the waitresses aren't actually classed as waitresses, but their official title is model. And you can hire models based on looks, age and gender.

[–]jamesdeandomino 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

just like that hotel/casino/restaurant in Ocean's Thirteen. "Models who serve". Way to get around regulations.

[–]mags87 6 points7 points8 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

It's not discrimination if you can't reasonably do the job as described. If the job is to "be an attractive female" then you don't qualify as a man. Its like trying to sue for not getting the part of LeBron James in a movie because you are a 5'7" white guy.

[–][deleted] 219 points220 points221 points 11 years ago (27 children) | Copy Link

You know how many women have NY Times bestselling novels, win awards, prizes and get amazing recognition. Very many. If ANY industry was purely equitable and based on the author's quality/skill, it would be the writing industry.

It's absolutely astonishing that anyone actually looks at novelists and goes "well, there are many female authors, who publish many books and get many sales and prizes - BUT I still see enough sexism to deny Men from publishing for a year". It just feels like western feminism is finding itself short of battlegrounds, so it's now rehashing old ones.

[–]walkonthebeach 109 points110 points111 points 11 years ago (15 children) | Copy Link

5 of the top 12 fiction authors are women! And there is a very even spread of men and women all across the list:

[–][deleted] 16 points17 points18 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

When they appear to support their biases out of context..

[–]Jimmyx24 30 points31 points32 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

When 12 of the top 12 are female and people begin to stop purchasing books by male authors, then it's "enough"

[–]Stephen1985 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

More importantly white male authors

[–]Electroverted 9 points10 points11 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I chuckle when I see statistics like "30% of violence happens to women." So what's their goal then? Equality would be 50% of violence happens to women. Or do they want only men to be victims of violence? What about, say, and this might be a bit more challenging, working on overall peace instead?

[–]Tacsol5 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Well, considering nearly 6 out of 10 of new college graduates are women, that should be like 7 out of 12 published fiction authors.

The fiction best sellers of Small Press (one of the publishing companies the UN is supporting) are about 50:50

http://www.spdbooks.org/pages/bestsellers/fiction/default.aspx

[–]walkonthebeach 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The whole thing is just PR buzz for all involved. There is nothing to stop these companies signing-up men anytime, but just releasing the books at the right time after the year is up. Either that, or they will just be clever and say that the release has been planned for months.

[–]Nearly_Helpful 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Well say goodbye to the profits of 7 of the top 12. They will really prove their point when they start losing profits I guess.

[–]iainmf 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I don't think it's fair to count Shakespeare he's had a more time to sell books than the others and is included in school curriculums. That means the 3 top selling authors are women.

[–]Sour_Badger 17 points18 points19 points 11 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

Pen names effectively eliminate all bias. Why not use that ages old tool?

[–]sdfkhashhhahasdd 10 points11 points12 points 11 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

That doesn't make sense. If using a pen name of the opposite gender helps you that's evidence of bias. Yeah it might help you, personally, but it caters to the bias rather than eliminating it.

[–]Molehole 14 points15 points16 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Just taking a quick look at my bookshelf

  • J. K. Rowling

  • J. R. R. Tolkien

  • K. A. Applegate

  • C. S. Lewis

Can't really tell which gender they are. Problem solved.

[–]Stephen1985 7 points8 points9 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

This is my biggest problem. Does anyone actually look for a book and turn it down based on the authors sex?

I usually just nose at the synopsis and if it sounds good I'll give it a go. I can't even name the authors of the last 3 books I read but at a glance at my kindle I seem to have a lot of books by female authors.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I don't even pay attention to the writers name until I read the book and like/hate it. I buy a book based on the synopsis of the story, not the writer.

Though if I like a particular writer's past work, I'll look up their other books online and try them out that way. But as far as buying new books goes, I don't even factor in who wrote it.

[–]Sour_Badger 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Use a unisex name or make all the authors of said publishing company use one with no pattern. Or announce all names will be pen names and then no one knows for sure who wrote what.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Then they wouldn't get credit? That's just a bad argument, bro.

Because it's not about equality. I believe in opportunity based equality, not outcome based equality, but if they were really about outcome based equality they would publish a 50\50 split of men and women. It's not about equality, it's about petty revenge.

The first author to become a billionaire was a woman. She deserved every penny. Then she turned around and donated so much of it to charity she stopped being a billionaire.

That is what feminists should be doing.

"Smashing the patriarchy" or instituting special rights for women is childish. If their goals were actually constructive such as building a 'matriarchy', I might respect them more. But their whole initiative is a non-starter, because its intent is to destroy, not create.

Anyone with critical thinking skills knew that the equality was never about actual equality.

[–]Philarete 16 points17 points18 points 11 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link

I've gotten in trouble on Reddit before about this, but in my opinion "equality" is a fairly meaningless term anyway. Either it means equality in the sense "the same regardless of any difference" or "the same except in cases of relevant difference". The former is what people often claim to believe, but is actually incredibly terrible and no one supports in practice. The latter is pointless because it just forces the question of what counts as a relevant difference, which takes us back to the initial discrimination question.

[–]chillaxinJ 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

hmm, I agree with your point about the subtleties if the definition of equality, but I don't think having relevant differences makes it meaningless. issues are often complex and just because the equation is complicated doesn't mean it isn't a good idea. although there are certainly difficulties in applying it.

[–]Philarete 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

issues are often complex and just because the equation is complicated doesn't mean it isn't a good idea.

That's the problem. Equality is an X = Y approach, an appeal for consistency. The more complex the context, the harder it is for that to make sense. A robust sense of justice has to allow for more than mere equality.

[–]Moozilbee 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Equality is about being treated as well, and having equal opportunity, but not having everything the same.

It's not a super be-all-end-all way to treat everyone and everything, it's just meant to mean that you shouldn't treat a man better than you would treat a woman in the same situation, or vice-versa, and they should be given equal opportunity unless you're unable to do so (men becoming midwives for example).

[–]GHGCottage 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Having equal legal rights is necessary starting point in my opinion. If one sex lacks some fundamental legal right the other has that at least ought to be fixed.

[–]Philarete 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

But what does "equal legal rights" mean?

[–]slayerx1779 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Not him, but I would assume "treated equally under the law when found in equal scenarios".

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

The real purpose of the equality movement is a power grab by the gov. And the stupid people swallow the bs.

[–]Philarete 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I disagree. "Equality" movements are appeals to a natural sense of "fairness." If a group thinks it needs more power, it will claim to be treated unequally to gain that power.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

If the equality movements were detrimental to gov power and control would they be so pervasive? Of course not. The reverse is also true.

[–]slayerx1779 -1 points0 points1 point 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Anyone from the UK wants to sue them? There was a recent thread by someone who said he has money and wants to do something.

They in violation because they receive public money. Specifically:

1) "And Other Stories" take public funding from the Lottery Fund and the Arts Council (http://www.andotherstories.org/about/arts-council-fiction-group/)

All the publishers in the group have received significant Arts Council England funding, either from the National Portfolio or the National Lottery funding administered via Grants for the Arts...

2) Lottery Fund prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex/gender (https://www.biglotteryfund.org.uk/about-big/our-approach/equalities/learn-about-equality) the .pdf file "Equality Matters". It's right there in the first Section, p. 6

"As a result, people cannot be discriminated against on the basis of: a their sex/gender"

You know who isn't ignorant? In 06, a lesbian woman lived 18 months as a man, after a VERY extensive transformation (actors, professional make up, the whole 9 yards). She "infiltrated" men's spheres, and documented her experiences for a book she was writing. Good stuff, really. I'd give you a link to the Youtube video describing it, but I'm on mobile, and at work.

[–]girlwriteswhat 21 points22 points23 points 11 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

When I was querying publishers, there were a few things that actual editors and agents recommended:

Do NOT put any educational background or relevant credentials into your letter unless they pertain directly to the subject matter of the book.

That is, no publisher or agent is going to care if you took a creative writing program. They only care about your credentials if, say, you're pitching a book on psychology and are a psychologist. Or if you're proposing a series of books about a fictional forensic anthropologist and are a noted forensic anthropologist.

As far as the quality of the writing in fiction, it's supposed to stand alone. A publisher will accept a book written by a highschool drop-out if it's good. They'll reject one written by someone with a masters in literature if it's shit.

I would expect that the same applies to the sex of the writer.

[–]girlwriteswhat 15 points16 points17 points 11 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

For sales purposes, by genre.

Male writers often adopt female or androgynous pseudonyms for fiction that targets female audiences (romance, chick-lit, women's fiction, erotic romance, etc). Female writers often adopt [edit: a word]male or androgynous pseudonyms for fiction that targets other audiences (action/adventure, thriller, etc).

BUT. The decision on a pseudonym occurs after the contract has been signed. When you query a publisher or agent, you query under your real name. And the majority of agents and editors in publishing overall, and particularly in fiction, are female. In some publishing houses, 80% of editors are female.

So yes, sexism exists in publishing, but it doesn't exist in the slushpile. When it comes to the slushpile, all that generally matters is the writing.

Focusing on getting more women to submit their books to you is one thing, actively discriminating against men to only sign with women is another.

What do they even hope to gain with this? Plenty of women writers in the world. So they'd turn away the best book they've ever read because a person with a penis wrote it?

The comments in there are retarded. "ONE PUBLISHER who cares?" So it's okay to discriminate as long as only one company, or a minority of companies are doing it? How does that work? Discrimination is discrimination. And this company is discriminating on who they publish.

Saw someone in there mention publishers who only sign with LBGT writers, and if that's true then I'm against that too. Publish books on merit, not their writer's person.

Literature and book publishing is already dominated by women from the top down. Romance novels are still the best selling genre, and it's consumed primarily by women. The more time one spends on the UN's own websites, poking around, the creepier they become. I am obviously up for the karma hit, but anyone who goes to their websites and starts poking around will see. Those who don't, won't. I totally get that.
''received a relatively positive, I would say warm, welcome. But what it will mean in practice is that we have to go to the Security Council before conflict arises. Judging from certain elements that we will study, particularly human rights violations to give those early war nings, we will then hopefully have steps taken, fact finding missions, semi monitors, human rights monitors, inspiring quiet diplomacy. Dag Hammarskjold, a former Secretary General, was a master at this, finding different ways of reaching parties through neighbours or influencing other actors, more foreign diplomacy, anyway a long list of actions to be taken at the stage of human rights violation in order to prevent a conflict from exploding in our face. We have started in that spirit recently by, I think, in both cases not early warning but late warning. In the Central African Republic where we probably should have sounded the alarm earlier, in the end we were extremely dramatic about the developments in November and I think the French in particular picked that up and steps were taken to avoid what could have been an even worse disaster than we have seen in the Central African Republic. In the case of South Sudan in the spirit of the ‘Rights Up Front’ initiative, we opened up the gates of the UN compounds and camps when the Nuer and Dinkas were killing each other in great numbers and I think I can say fairly that we, by that saved thousands of lives in those horrible days that those gates were open. That would not have been done without this initiative. This is what I wanted to say on the third pillar of the United Nations, human rights. Let me now say a few words about the new global landscape, as I call it. I sometimes tell my colleagues at the United Nations that we, in this organisation, must reflect three realities. We must see the United Nations as a mirror reflection of the world as it is, whether we like it or not, with the violence, with the human rights violations, with the extreme poverty, with the inequalities. We had better know this. Do not have any romantic views. You have to be making a very hard nosed realistic analysis of what goes on. That is the starting point, that is the reality. The second reality we have to reflect is also the emerging new realities, the emerging new trends, so that we can be advanced, be working for the international environment. And the third reality that we have to reflect is the world as it should be. The world, as it is, is a pretty nasty place, but the world as it should be is what is represented in the UN charter and the universal declaration of human rights, and the reason why many of us, and many of you I am sure, believe in international cooperation, believe in the spirit and values of this organisation, and our job is very simply to diminish the gap between the world as it is and the world as it should be. Just a little bit, but at least we are trying.''

''The rule of law is being recognized within the UN as being essential in developing the bridge to a new civilization, indicating an ascending life of human aspiration and endeavour ... a world of goodwill.'' .....
''Promoting the rule of law at the national and international levels is at the heart of the United Nations’ mission. Establishing respect for the rule of law is fundamental to achieving a durable peace in the aftermath of conflict, to the effective protection of human rights, and to sustained economic progress and development. The principle that everyone – from the individual right up to the State itself – is accountable to laws that are publicly promulgated, equally enforced and independently adjudicated, is a fundamental concept which drives much of the United Nations work.''

Official UN website search for the term marijuana:
HERE
Is that fucking horrifying, or what? No one in support of any loosening up of weed laws or prosecution, et cetera can possibly support the UN in any way. They are the prohibitionists' best friend. They foment serious violence over it in dangerous countries. As you can see by their own website search.
Ignore conspiracy themed websites and stick to official UN websites, and those of their stated ''partners'' , i.e., The World Goodwill Program.
See creepy stuff about policing the fuck out of the world with rule of law and drugs are bad and stomp stomp stomp. Crushing all indigenous thought into their ''think globally'' efforts. I support indigenous tribes thinking locally and in an indigenous manner. I am sickened by anyone desiring that the world come together to think alike in a global way. They are fucking dupes in delusion, leading to world control. They'll run to it like puppies to the teat.

It's fine, just 'identify as female' when you publish.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Either they will be publishing a lot less books, or a lot more shitty books. This is such a dumb move.

[–]Whisper 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

will produce no books by men... to beat gender bias...

My sides.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Assholes.

[–]CosmicCatLady 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Can't we all just get along. Getting jobs and contracts based on our work/skills and less on gender equality.

[–]Raudskeggr 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

To beat publishing gender bias?

Anyone have numbers on published living authors by gender? If be surprised if it wasn't pretty even...

That said, this is marketing. This will only draw in the demographic they're targeting.

[–]AloysiusC 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

These people are so pathetic. No amount of blocking or suppressing will change what they think is discrimination.

[–]scanspeak 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The UNITED nations seems determined to divide the sexes.

[–]Lhtfoot 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That does it!!!

In retribution, I call on all men to not "hold it back" during sex, FOR A YEAR!

[–]PeteMullersKeyboard 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The UN is one of the most disgusting organizations in the history of the world, this doesn't even surprise me.

[–]jimmywiddle 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

has anyone got a link to the actual twitter item ? I couldn't find it on there.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Someone write the best book of the year under a female pen name please.

[–]Klamters 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

So does this mean male authors are going to go by a more feminine name to get their books sold?

[–]casemodz 4 points5 points6 points 11 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

This will be known as "the year that absolutely no quality books were written"

[–]rogerwatersbitch 5 points6 points7 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Women obviously have and do write quality books (it seems too stupid for me to clarify), but if you throw away quality books because men wrote them, the quality in general WILL be sacrificed.

[–]casemodz 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I know it was stupid. It was a joke.

[–]Kazaril 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Women can't write quality books?

[–]bebop010395 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

And who's to say for the sake of this "Year of the Woman" stunt that they won't just churn out female publications whether it's quality writing or not.

At this point it's not about well written works, it's about "making a statement".

[–]AloysiusC 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Don't worry. They'll be written. The only thing this will do is cost the publishers who implement it.

[–]Sasha_ 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

Wealthiest author in the world is JK Rowling. Who is, obviously, a woman.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 11 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

While I disagree w/this article, that's hardly proof of anything for either side.

[–]Sasha_ 4 points5 points6 points 11 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

It's proof women are hardly disadvantaged in publishing.

[–]nelsonblaha 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

It's proof one woman is not disadvantaged in publishing. This is like using the Queen of England as an example speaking about women in general.

[–]Sasha_ 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Fare enough, take a look at this list and tell me where the gender-discrimination is:

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's not.

One point of data is hardly evidence.

[–]Drunkenestbadger 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I remember in Salman Rushdie's memoir, Joseph Anton, there is a passage where he and other authors discuss how male dominated the writing world is. It was their feeling that the publishing world "was not an equal opportunity employer." And did not owe anyone a quota system. He made the point that he was the sole representative of South East Asia - a sixth of the world's population.

If this publisher suceeds, more power to them. Many books by female authors deserve to be published that haven't been, but were it my business, I feel it would be a bone-headed move akin to trying to win a footrace by hopping on one foot.

[–]Busangod 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Who cares? Books, like anything else, are published because of their perceived value. If women had been writing books of value, we'd be seeing more female authors. If this company wants to publish books that won't sell, that's awesome for the competition. Once they see their profits failing, after the early rush of buy-it-because-a-woman-wrote-it support dies down, they'll change their tune. Art is different from most jobs, in that you just can't fake it. You can't make an unfunny comedian funny, you can't make a mediocre author great.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I'm a little confused as to how not publishing men and only publishing women does anything BUT promote gender bias... Smh

[–]apullin 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Someone should just submit under a female pseudonym, or use a ghost writer. Even if they don't win, reveal afterwards.

[–]sosorrynoname 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]cynoclast 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]Insula92 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]mindscrambler26 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

[–]Jimmyx24 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

What I'm seeing here is they're going to be publishing more sub-par content because it's from a woman rather than more noteworthy content from a man.

Alright fellas, we've seen it done hundreds of times. You guys set up the stage, I'll get the microphone and speakers, and someone start making signs with ridiculous exaggerations on them.

Nah jk. What are we, women?

[–]tmh2duggy 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

How are they defeating gender bias? They are just reversing the bias from on gender to another. I'm tired of these idiot that push for equality but are so blinded by their agenda that they can't see they are now just another problem.

[–]Dakrys 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

"My books failed because I'm a woman."

Ok.

To be perfectly fair, the biggest female author is probably JK Rowling and she went with JK because she specifically intended to write for little boys who think girls are icky.

[–]Felinomancy 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

UN women are endorsing a propaganda campaign to get people's attention concerning actual discrimination which actual women are facing in actual third world countries. Not every country out there is a western nation.

But, you know, if you think the saudis are treating their women right, go ahead and keep whining you stupid assholes.

Why is this an issue?

People should be allowed to have [Men|Women|Black|White|Horse]-only awards.

If its only socially acceptable to have one of the above, the solution is to pull the rest up, rather than the rest down.

Considering how many women win awards for their books, and the richest bookseller is a woman, I don't doubt there is little evidence for why this is needed on an international level. Perhaps in local areas that are culturally and legally unlikely to buy a book by a woman, it might make more sense. For people in this generation, that have nothing to do with the past, I'd understand them being pissed at being unable to win a traditionally equal award, suddenly being awarded to one gender, which they cannot easily change.

No, its you who doesn't recognize all the great women who write. I see so many books by women on award shelves, or just in general for most literature I both look through when buying, and personally read. I see no reason to claim bias, at least anymore than child care and elementary teachers who are mostly female or firefighters and police who are mostly male. Just because an outcome is slightly skewed in one direction does not mean bias.

There are people who get murdered for writing yes, should we only award those who speak about democracy while in China? How about Christianity in Middle Eastern countries? Hell no. Its extreme what happens to them but, all of a sudden they get overlooked for women only? If they want to make a new award system in place specifically for disadvantaged groups, that's fine, but to avert the course of one that is inherently without discrimination in entering, just makes needless affirmative action.

Did you not read how I said in general (not just the awards shelf) for most literature I look through? Heck, even my writing classes in college had a slight female majority. They had no sign of distress at their prospects over getting published over males. Not one of them complained, and all 3 classes were very open to these sorts of thoughts, as getting published is a big thing, and it was looked at closely. We had to buy a whole book simply to look at how huge the listings were, on where to go. Many were for females only, which was sad, considering I actually liked to write what they wanted and it looked like a great outlet.

White feathers is a particular example specific to WW1.

A year in to WW1 men were rioting in the trenches and shot if they ran away. Leaders rammed millions of doomed men who were forced in to service at each other for literally no purpose beyond their own arrogance. Go look at a map of WW1 borders. They stayed the same for almost five years and the war didn't end till Germany simply ran out of men.

Being forced to fight and die simply because of your gender isn't oppression?

Bro, I was in the Army too, I went on dozens of combat missions, but I volunteered. I wasn't starved to death or forced in to a gas filled, corpse filled, disease ridden trench for months. I didn't have to march from Russia to Germany with no hard hat and worn out equipment while my country was in the middle of a revolution.

US military service is just that, a service we sign up for for whatever reason we choose. It is not comparable to the total war of WW1 and other wars men have been forced in to by greedy leaders (some of whom were women by the way).

I think we just don't think about the gravitas of the meaning of these words enough. We don't consider the scope of the horrors that have given birth to our modern ideals. We don't remember the way commanders in WW2 were so psychologically scarred as young officers in WW1 that they went through extreme measures to avoid casualties.

Instead we try and find a use for these words in a modern society that is so far removed from the reality of human oppression that we use the word to describe things that are really just differences.
