Whats most scary to me about this is that education is being touted as something impossible. Im not saying its her fault but to hear a young woman frame any opportunity for education as exploitive rather than a method of furthering and improving yourself disturbs me. Yes an education is expensive. Yes, the US does not make it easy. But I wonder why people dont see that as motivation to learn more? She says she read books about starting a business and is investing—where did she learn all of that? Why is she leaving out the fact that she did, in fact, have to get some sort of help to further her business and her net worth? This is oversimplification of the process and what it took her to get where she is. It is not different from expensive schools touting their degrees as surefire ways to success. I guess my point is that at least the expensive ass schools are a somewhat proven method and offer at least some level of career network and development. I cringe at the thought of any young person seeing such a post and considering it an alternative to building a career. Education is incredibly valuable.

Edit: I did not mean “easy” to minimize the barriers people face to education. Just an fyi. Nor am I trying to discredit the intersectional forces at play in the US education system. I am simply providing a summary of my opinion about this specific post here. I also think Id like to clarify that I mean education—as separately as it can be considered from the worst parts of the education system—as being something worth pursuing.

When a friend sent me this particular thread at r/antiwork, I made an audible "Ouch" when I read:

I managed to sell my soul to Amazon around 25 years old at ~200k a year. Fortunately, work was around 40 hours a week. She probably pulled 200k a few years younger than me and without college debt, I'm happy for her. But I also got a CS degree along the way and don't need to interact with gross, bottom-of-the-barrel men 99% of the time, and I have a decent career trajectory so no complaints here. If anybody has a choice, I'd still cautiously advise them to choose to sell their soul to Amazon than selling their butt pics OnlyFans.

The most comical part about that thread though is that everybody was piling on her for wanting to invest in real estate and stocks because being a landlord or investor is "antiworker“!

Like what do they expect her to do? Just accept that inflation is going to eat up her savings and when her dead-end OF job inevitably stall at some point? Posting butt pics is a low-skill job, the barrier of entry is extremely low. If the reward for her is this high right now, the competition is going to eventually catch up. It’s good that she is making money and she can invest. But she is like the minority on OF. For every one woman like her there are hundreds of women ruining their lives and making a few dollars. This will destroy any chance of future employers hiring them if for some reason they find out. I get that it’s hard to find jobs and they pay very poorly nowadays… but this is not the solution. “Hey, if you are poor, there is a solution. Just go and join OF and take nudes for strangers!!! There will definitely be no future repercussions from this!” College is not for everyone, but don’t think that sex work is the only choice you have. Why is our society promoting this now???

The saddest part about this post is how the OP is completely disregarding that there are financially viable pathways to getting an education. Merit scholarships, awards for ethnically and racially diverse students, and in some cases, a full ride to cover all costs... two years of community college and transferring to a public four-year college... Pell grants to supplement what part-time income can't cover... there are many possibilities.

It's unfortunate that education is automatically being equated with debt, depression, and misery. With the right financial planning, some students can even study abroad. Instead, she's shaking her T&A or doing fetish work on OF and has zero future and no financial security...

I feel terrible for her parents, who may not even know this is how their daughter is making a "living."

Sex work is work but it's horribly problematic work within a horribly problematic system. I can't blame her for grabbing onto a chance in this hellscape of an existence where most people will never get out of debt and indentured servitude. I do wish that this wasn't her best chance though. All work is inherently exploitative and all of us who are working more desirable roles are only able to do so due to the hard labor around the world of the many who must complete the hard dirty thankless work. Sex trafficking is terrible. So is forcing children and adults to work almost non-stop in mines, dangerous factories, and other dehumanizing "jobs" that are essentially slave labor.

Yes she is benefiting from a system that rewards a small few while it grinds down the majority, but so is everyone else.
