For Sunday lunch I agreed to go on a first date with a guy I met on OLD a few weeks ago. We couldn't meet earlier, restaurants in our area only opened up again recently. I mentioned that I'm really craving a good piece of steak so he suggested a place. First red flag, he waited till late evening the day before to confirm the date, because we haven't settled on a time, only a day and place.

When we got to the restaurant he at least had a reservation, so I thought there might be some hope for him. Second red flag came when we ordered. The place we went to is fairly expensive. He ordered the cheapest appetizer on the menu for himself, and then asked me if I'm still going for a steak. The steak was more than 3 times the price of the meal he ordered for himself, and also so much bigger. So I decided to also just stick to appetizers. Didn't want to eat a big meal by myself while the person I'm dining with is only eating a tiny plate of vegetables and a slice of bread.

Conversation was really boring, it seemed like he had no idea how to talk. And also he was eating extremely slowly and admitted that he didn't know what pesto or hummus is. He tried eating it with a spoon on it's own, not realizing that he should spread it on the bread or dip his vegetables in it. He claimed to have ordered that exact meal before and he loved it the last time, but he literally has no idea what pesto is for (his meal came with 3 different types). It was just weird.

After I came back from going to the bathroom, his plate was suddenly cleared and I realized that this guy is incapable of eating in front of another person. When we were talking about cooking and recipes, he admitted that all his food comes pre-cooked from a nutritionalist and that he has a problem controlling himself when it comes to unhealthy food.

I understand that many people struggle with eating disorders, but if that is something you struggle with then maybe a date in a restaurant isn't a good idea. It's just awkward and unpleasant for the other person.

When we finally got the bill, he grabbed it and immediately worked out his exact part of the bill, then went on a huge rant about how this is the way he does things, he doesn't want to make things awkward between us by paying for my meal, and I shouldn't expect him to pay. Suddenly he was loud when earlier he talked so softly I could barely hear him. Even the tables next to us turned around to watch.

I just said it's fine, paid my part, and left. Of course I'm going to block him after this. This was one of the most unpleasant dates I ever had, don't think splitting the bill was such a big deal for any of the other guys I dated. I just really needed to vent about this.
