Surrogacy is a method of assisted reproduction where intended parents work with a gestational surrogate who will carry and care for their baby(ies) until birth. Intended parents use surrogacy to start or grow their families when they can't do so on their own.

Why don’t we denounce surrogacy like we do with pornography and prostitution? In all three scenarios the female body is treated as a place of business where people pay for a “service”. Should pregnancy be a service though?

We all know the female body experiences numerous changes when pregnant, both physical and mental, thanks or no thanks to the hormones that bring about the miracle of life. So, like any mother, surrogate moms bond with the child in their wombs, and often experience emotional pain when detached from their child after birth—even if they knew and intended all along to give up the child to the intended parents. A 2014 qualitative study on the experiences of eight surrogate mothers published the Iranian Journal of Reproductive Medicine, revealed surrogate moms experience significant emotional attachment to the children they carry. Researchers concluded, “surrogacy pregnancy should be considered as a high-risk emotional experience because many surrogate mothers may face negative experiences.” [Src]

Having children is often seen as a universal human right. Is it good for women as a whole when people think it is their right to have children?

What if people who can’t biologically have children accepted it with grace and dignity instead of spending a small fortune on surrogacy?

Why is having a baby/starting a family seen as something that should be attained at all costs?
