I got into it with some of ya'll here on this subreddit a while about bimbo tiktok because I called shenanigans on the trend and I think this community maybe hasn't been exposed to it so much. But this was the kind of stuff I was talking about; it's not empowering, even if it a ~purely feminine~ subculture. The narrative among tiktok bimbos is that they are taking back the word and being "non-judgmental" and such, but what they don't realize is that bimbo is and always has been a slur, and we as women cannot reclaim it in any meaningful way because it has always been a weapon used against us.

This is the end result of sexi-posi libfem theory, where we are still encouraged to be performative for the male gaze, passive, pleasant, and childlike. What is the liberation in that? What is the power in that? If it was so empowering, we'd see men embrace it en masse rather than as a joke (himbo).

A subculture where women can express kindness and a lack of judgment and beautify themselves to their own liking is perfectly fine, but don't get it twisted: this is Pickme behavior with a sparkly libfem sheen. Because if it was really about expressing those things, the women wouldn't be conforming to a certain set of behaviors or aesthetic choices that just so happen to be culled from the aesthetics and behavior so common in pornography.

As someone who was suckered into the entire bimbofication subculture for quite some time, she’s lying when she says she’s not doing it for the male gaze. For me, it was 50% insecurity and 50% shock value because people would judge me based on my appearance and not my intellectual capacity and somehow I thought that was brillIant?

The only time I’ve seen someone “take the word back” in any sustained or positive way is with the n-word, and that happened without the reach of TikTok. Why is that? Because TikTok trends are created as fast as they begin, with no staying power or significant attention/thought paid to the why’s and how’s. It’s attention-seeking lazily disguised as activism. Unless they go viral, these trends live within tiny micro-cultures that guarantee your “movement” reaches only as far as the folks adjacent to it.

this is quite bizarre. throughout the 90s and 00s, women heavily fought against the idea that we all wanted to be this way. you can be kind, non-judgmental, and well-dressed without calling yourself a bimbo.

i think that this is some kind of backlash to how difficult life is nowadays. the aesthetic presents itself as stereotypically hyperfeminine, but it’s about infantilization. it’s a response to knowing that you can “do the right thing” by going to school, completing higher education, slaving away at unpaid internships, but still wind up in debt with horrible job prospects. and now during a pandemic, maybe no job prospects. also the realization that half the population will never take you seriously even when you’re accomplished and dressed business casual. it’s a cope and a cry for help. it is fun to play dress up and act silly, but making this your personality and purposely using a “dumb” “baby” voice is giving “please save me”.
