Let's reframe the question:

Are men human? Yes.
Can humans be oppressed? Quite obviously yes.
Therefore, as a subtype of "humans", men can in fact be oppressed.

However, I don't like the word "oppressed" because it seems, when applied to men, to be trivialising and often even ridiculing men for saying they have problems. Who would you think of as being "oppressed", historically?

Black people? Slaves? Citizens of countries that were invaded? Countries in which women are prohibited from doing things that men do? Genuine criminal, inhumane lack of agency or routes of escape, under threat of violence or death.

I've tried half a dozen times to drill into this, in this message, but I just keep finding myself reiterating what we all know; that the bar for women to be worthy of support, protection, and compassion is rock bottom, but for men it is not (it is substantially higher, some might say unreasonably high). The former get cared for regardless, as though they were helpless children, while the latter are expected to be everything else.

Long story slightly ~~shorter~~ longer: women have allowed themselves to be put in the same class as slaves and citizens of invaded countries by our societies making it impossible to "be a woman" wrong, and preaching that they never have any agency whatsoever. It can never be their fault that they're "oppressed" because they (allegedly) don't have the power to do anything about their position. Which is blatantly bullshit in a world where women can and do become CEOs and politicians (not as often as they'd like, but it's possible, and it does happen in the real world), where women have substantial social, legal, and political power, where women shape the environments of schools and social groups.

But to argue against the story that women have no agency, no privilege, no benefit, because of the context provided by that narrative, is "oppression".

Quite frankly if you think you're "oppressed" as a woman in the modern west, such that you compare yourselves as a group to people who are legitimately oppressed, you're talking out of your arse, and you're disrespecting those who truly are helpless. You get favourable treatment in so many areas of life, most often where it matters, you live a relative life of luxury, you control the narrative, you are privileged.

You're not being tied to a post and stoned to death, or made to face a firing squad. You're not locked up in cages to rot. You're not being malnourished and starved of resources. You're not going to get mortally punished for having "incorrect" opinions. You're not being thrown in jail because you failed to live up to being a "proper" woman. You're not being exploited for hard manual labour, you're not sent to brutal, devastating warzones, and threatened with life-destroying consequences for not complying. You're not even seeing the same level of disrespect and danger that homosexuals had to put up with, under regimes which dictated that it was illegal, immoral, and worthy of serious punishment to be gay. Nor are you getting your house firebombed for being the wrong colour.

I suspect many of you are aware of that.

That's why I don't like the word "oppression", because (in the social justice context) it sets the bar exactly as high as it needs to be in order to include or exclude whoever you want it to. In common usage, it means the things I said it means above: being literally unable to succeed or even live a fruitful, independent life for fear or violence, serious retribution, or deadly persecution. When you compare our lives to warzones and violent persecution, neither men or women, on the whole, are "oppressed" in the western world.

Except possibly men, who are subject to the draft or mandatory conscription. Because they do get sent to warzones, potentially against their will, and are forced to put themselves in mortal danger. To protect you, dear feminist.

My question in these conversations is: who gets to define oppression? It's odd to me that a few far left academics want to be the powers that classify who can and cannot claim status as a marginalized group. I think setting yourself up as the authority on this is basically admitting you are the one in power lol Ancient philosophy teaches us that suffering is an inherent part of life that none of us escape. But any individual can be oppressed by having a social identity that is looked down upon or excluded. Many men definitely fall into this category.

Im 40, straight male, I have done hair in salons for 20+ years. I have experienced a difference in treatment from peers to management/owners etc. I'm always the one tasked with taking out garbage, replacing lights etc. Some of it is gender role and now I've been doing it so long this way I'm used to/programmed to do so. Ive been held to a different standard from a "salon politics" perspective, restricted on content that could be discussed in break room while the girls would all openly talk about pwriod blood and sucking cock/swallowing cum. Women are not oppressed, nor have they ever been. Men are far to disposed for women for them to be oppressed. Are women subject to harmful gender roles? So are men. Can women be victimized because they are women? So are men. Are women denied opportunities because they are women? So are men.

It is also entirely possible that within a society, two groups opposing groups could both be oppressed at the same time by the circumstances of their time. And it's certainly possible that within a society, there may be pockets in which one is worst off than the other.

The idea that men cannot be oppressed or cannot face major systematic injustice is just feminist revisionist history. It's chauvinistic and misandric bullshit. It's the lie that enables women to silence male suffering or twist it into advocacy for women.

It's a post modern marxist viewpoint of the world.
The basic recipe is simple. Divide the world into two groups:

People have only ever come together and found peace with each other when they put their differences aside and looked at what they shared in common.

Men are expected to perform many of society's most unsafe, violent and stressful work, they experience higher rates of suicide and imprisonment, and face various biases and discriminatory practices in the justice system and elsewhere. Women face oppression too, of course. The same rigid gender role system oppresses both genders. I don't understand how both "sides" can't see that.

Hello. I am an American male. I was oppressed, abused, & manipulated by my wife. Daily degradation, never a positive comment, I could not have an opinion that wasn't ridiculed. I thought I was a strong man, and should suffer to keep an appearance of family for my kids. After a time constant thoughts of suicide were kept active, with only my children keeping me alive. After her physical abuse escalated on me. She felt empowered enough to kick me out and make me homeless. I will never trust enough to love again. 12 years later, I still refuse to date, I have a home, my kids have graduated and live with me now. I never could afford time or money for therapy. Who would believe me.

The terms power vs oppression and privilege vs marginalization mean specific concepts in sociology.

Out of context they come off random and so get misused on social media.

A lot in the world is about power dynamics. Human desires to have control over its environment and itself (why bodily autonomy is important to human). it creates tools for this. Everything around you is a tool. Objects, ideas, skills, social structures. Human built the society you see around you. Human attempts to enact control over itself, other humans, its environment.

Let’s take an example of adult privilege, which is in fact a thing.

Society is built by adults, for adults. This means that adults are the privileged so have power and thus can exert control more easily over the marginalized which it follows creates oppression on children.

Like two sides of a coin.

Search up intersectionality wheel.

Notice how man is closer than woman to the centre but transgender is further than woman.

Historically due to patriarchal structures like Abrahamic (dominant in the world) religions and concepts of marriage positioning man above woman that created a power imbalance between the 2 genders (in a binary gender model). This is called patriarchy.

But privilege vs oppression is intersectional.

Whites had power and so privilege over blacks who were oppressed and so marginalized. This is called white supremacy.

Even if this isn’t so today in the form of hard power (laws), there can still prevail the soft power of beliefs around it like racism that still exists.

A white woman can have white privilege over a black man while the black man has male privilege over the white woman. the term oppression here doesn’t mean much more than the other side of the coin for acknowledging this dynamic. Like I could have also phrased that sentence to be “a black man is oppressed by the white woman due to her race while the black woman is oppressed by the black man due to his gender”.

In practice every human is unique and all aspects of intersectionality create like a crystal that bends light differently from different angles too.

cis man, as a pure gender concept, can’t be oppressed. But an individual human who happens to be a man can be oppressed due to various intersectionality.

Take note, culture and time period will impact the magnitude of this as well.

Im a 33 year old guy.. my situation isn’t unique but it is peculiar. I grew up down in San Diego, in a part of the city there has never been a post card of, or a tour group, in an area called Oceanside, I won’t get into a city history lesson but they did some fucking power moves to keep racial segregation alive, to the point I could, to this day, take a highlighter and draw the general lines on a map. My name on here is what it is for a reason, Laura bush addressed the issue of us, unsupervised kids who fell through the cracks, pushing for juvenile reform or some shit. Basically a “lock up poor kids”

Shit was wild, I’ve always been kind of an oddball, never tried to “act black” or whatever, that shits a suburban myth, anyone who thinks anyone “acts black” obviously doesn’t know very many black people. That environment was, in my opinion, an amazing place to grow up. But i had to repress my own sexuality. Between hood shit, falling asleep to the bombs at Pendleton, late night training at the cop gun range up the way.. we all kept real cool with eachother for the most part.

By the time I was 14 I was out and about, mostly just LA, riverside, a few of the fun beaches and Tijuana. Met some train hoppers I had heard about and that was that, I was on my way.

Holy shit I did not realize how nice strangers were.. and I calmed down a bit. Now I realize that I had some serious ptsd shit, but hey, that’s life. Also came to terms with my sexuality.

I don’t “look” gay. I don’t “look” like I’m from where I’m from. I inked my face when I was 16, not to look cool or tough or anything, because I never wanted to have the option of joining the military.

With women, I would just usually let it ride, like it’s not that serious, no hate on them. I kept cool until I wound up having a kid with a likeminded human from Maryland who was on the run from felony probation.. yeah that fucked up. Probably one of the few things in my life that isn’t my fault.. but it fucked me up.

People know when people hurt, and straight dudes, I’m sorry your ladies love us, but it’s because (at least in my case) I’d do a lot of anything to not make another human.

By this point I had been around like a decade, kind of a milestone for anyone. Started bouncing back a bit, stopped being a bitch and trying to be honest with myself and others. My straight friends don’t care or my gay friends, none of my gay homeboys pulled no shit. None of my trans home girls pulled no shit. But goddamn biological females.. fuck man. Tl;dr: I’m being encouraged to put together a few of my own stories that paint women and closeted men in a pretty ugly light, and I do t know if I should, talking to a close friend who isn’t hardline political or anything says it sounds like I’ve been raped a lot and should probably tell my story to help people or something, and I’m worried out of context “all” women, the ones that say that anyway, will get pissed.

I'd say that when politicians can publicly laugh at official stats (And say that it's a good thing) that suicide rates of men are going UP - And get CHEERED for it by the crowd, then yea, the oppression is real:

This is just one tiny clip, there are others of more politicians laughing at this... Or how about meetings for men to discuss suicide prevention getting protested, disrupted, and even shut down by women/feminists stating men have no need for such meetings?

Isn't that oppression right there? I could go on, but just these two examples give you a big clue as to the answer.

I didn't even mention the articles/books that get published (YES PUBLISHED) stating all men should be killed, and/or society is better off without them, and we should just find a way to exploit their labor and enslave them... Yes such books exist and get little to no criticism by MSM... Says a lot doesn't it?

Men can be discriminated against. Doctors give male patients less time than female patients. Judges give male offenders longer sentences than female offenders who commit the same crime. That is my understanding of oppression.

They are. They’re groomed to believe being a man is either the best thing ever or makes them the villain for everything. They’re forced to believe their worth lies in their work and how much money they make. They’re constantly told their feelings are not valid, and that they need to suck it up and ‘be a man’. Average Men are not supposed to be human beings in this world. They are glorified robots designed to feed the CEO’s and their wives endless amounts of money while they work themselves to death. And should they show even the slightest bit of pushback in these scenarios? Fired. Divorced. Accused of abuse or rape.

Not all men deal with all of these things. But most of them have to take at least a handful of these things. It’s not the gender that is doing the oppressing. It is the officers up top who do not value the lives of their own species.

When someone says “men can’t be oppressed as they are the oppressors” they are touching on a real and valid point about how society views certain groups of people and the power dynamics that arise from that. Oppressed and oppressors are the wrong words to be used for this since by their actual definitions even oppressors can themselves be oppressed but just because their point is poorly worded doesn’t mean it’s invalid.

That makes no sense. Is the argument "there are more men at the top therefore men as a whole are oppressors"?

Using some commonly known stats (because I can't be bothered looking them up): - higher prison sentences - unlikely to have custody of their children in separations/divorces - make up most of the manual labour jobs, often at a higher risk of injury - more likely to be driven to suicide

oppression əˈprɛʃ(ə)n noun - prolonged cruel or unjust treatment or exercise of authority. - the state of being subject to oppressive treatment. - mental pressure or distress.

The first 2 points are at the hands of the (legal/judicial) system, the last 2 are societal. All of them fit under "prolonged cruel or unjust treatment".

Oppression isn't one way, just because men are oppressed in some ways doesn't mean women can't be (and vice versa). Unjust treatment because one is a man/woman sucks and we should strive to fix that. When it comes to oppression, we can all be on the receiving end but it's unlikely we're personally dishing it out, so I don't see the benefit of slinging shit at each other.

This might be random and not related to the post at all, but I gotta say that I'm pleasantly surprised that this subreddit actually has guys who are bringing up genuine problems in society. Usually when I see a subreddit name like 'menrights' it brings up the thought that it's a space filled with guys who are just complaining about women.(so basically incels.) So this is a breath of fresh fucking air that this place doesn't seem toxic. You guys are actually discussing issues like how domestic violence against men is often brushed aside or not taken as seriously if it was the reverse, which always makes me so angry as a woman because everyone deserves to be treated equally under the law. Seeing the abusers of male victims getting off with a slap on the wrist kinda ruins my day lol, it just makes me so fucking angry every time I see a case where our justice system just... fails people.

A little more than 100 years ago, states adopted what they called the "tender years' doctrine" in regards to child custody after divorce. This essentially said that children automatically go with their mothers, as policymakers were convinced that children didn't need their dads and instead should go with their mothers.

Around 50 years ago, amongst constitutional, equal protection (e.g. oppression) concerns, states adopted the "best interests" standard. Meaning, the court will decide what is "best" for the child, and make rulings accordingly.

50 years of history and a hundreds of scholarly documents later (I'm somewhat of an expert in this field), and we can plainly see that the "best interests" standard really is a loosely-masked continuation of "mom automatically gets the kids." Everyone knows it, but few admit it.

I can think of few things more oppressive than taking your kids away from you and relegating you to seeing them a couple weekends per month (if you're lucky and she didn't move across the country or to another country), when your only crime is being a man. Add false accusations and the general belief that all men must be the villain if there's a dispute, and you see lives ruined as easily as signing a piece of paper.

Hell yeah, men are oppressed.

You don't have to search for anything. Men as a whole cannot be oppressed, neither can women BTW.

Groups of men have always been oppresses, as much as groups of women have always been oppressed. Feminists will hide behind having no voting rights, when most of history, men in general did not have them either. Men can be forced to fight in pointless wars etc.

So I land at this conclusion, people without power can and will be oppressed by people with power. The only thing that varies is the degree to which it happens.
