I apologize in advance for how long this will be. If you read on, you will likely understand why this is a topic that I feel compelled to rant about.

This tweet does not represent the typical opinion of most feminists. However, the general sentiment that false allegations never occur is rampant among feminists, and it's a serious problem. I strongly suspect that many people here have had a conversation similar to the excerpt that I'm going to share here:

Me: I’m not in the “believe all women” camp, and I never will be. The people who think like that are simply wrong, and as far as I can tell, that includes you.

Her: You seem to be in the “don't believe any women” camp though.

Me: Of course you would think that.

Her: You don't seem to believe me (Minimal context: She had told me that she was raped by a neighbor several months prior to this conversation. I asked her if she had told the police, and if he was still there. She had not, and he was. These facts struck me as odd, and it showed on my face. I never said I didn’t believe her, but she was so angry at my apparent skepticism that she told me to “get the fuck away from her” within 2 mins. What you’re reading here is a chat that took place the following day via FB.)

Me: I don’t know what to think about the things you’ve told me. I think you use words like rape, harass, and assault WAY more loosely than I would.

Her: If you believe that I use terms like rape loosely, why aren't you afraid that I'd accuse you?

Me: I wouldn’t say that I’m simply not afraid of it. It’s not something that concerns me actively, but it’s definitely something that remains in the back of my mind. Given the direction that our society is clearly moving, these are things that all men need to be aware of all the time now. The presumption of innocence is being eroded. I feel vaguely aware of the need to make sure I can at least provide evidence to support my innocence regardless of who I’m with. All it takes is one liar to falsely accuse me, and people like you will be more than ready to string me up.

I know this person well. She and I have dated off and on for years, and I believe that she is a pretty typical example of your everyday feminist (maybe slightly crazier). She believes that female victims are routinely mistreated, doubted, and even dismissed by law enforcement and society in general. She has also told me explicitly that she believes the presumption of innocence "goes too far." She thinks that the default legal position should be neutrality rather than innocence. Finally, she is adamant that concerns about false allegations are "massively overblown." Women "just don't do that."

Here's the kicker. Almost exactly two months after that conversation, I found myself handcuffed in the back of a police car after she and her friend lied to the police and claimed that I had assaulted them. This comment is already far too long for me to go into much detail, but the gist is that we were at a bar, I tried to leave, and for some reason these two women thought I had stolen a phone. They chased me out of the bar screaming threats, obscenities, and false accusations at me. I stopped and told them that I did not have the phone, and then I turned again to leave. That's when the girl from above grabbed me from behind by my collar, tore my coat, and spun me around. I managed to push her off of me (she was completely unharmed), and shouted at both of them, "Do not fucking touch me!" Then I turned again, and got the hell out of there. Still believing that I had the phone, one of them started shouting for police, and I was arrested within minutes. While the women were explaining my "crime" to the cops, someone brought the phone out of the bar. Realizing that they had mistakenly attacked me, the girls changed their story and claimed that I had "just started pushing them" after they asked for the phone back. The police completely declined to investigate my claim that I had been grabbed from behind.

I was sent to jail, charged with misdemeanor assault and domestic violence (two separate counts), and I'm literally going to trial on Monday. This happened almost three months ago, and I was just able to confirm yesterday that STILL nobody has even asked the women whether or not they grabbed me. I took and passed a polygraph voluntarily, have been consistent all along, and vehemently rejected a plea deal, but here we are.

The point I want to make with all of this is to say that I don't buy the standard line that this/these women are extraordinarily immoral people. What they did was horrible, but the only reason it could have gone this far is because the presumption of innocence, particularly for men in he-said-she-said cases, is being eroded rapidly, and everyone knows it. These women did what they did primarily because they had good reason to believe that they could get away with it, and guess what, they have. Through a combination of lying women, police incompetence, and sheer bad luck, I've got zero chance to prove what I know to be true. The best thing I can hope for now is that I'll go to trial Monday, and the jury will be composed of reasonable people who see what's really going on here. There's no way the prosecution can prove that I committed a crime, because I did not commit it. The only remaining question is, without the ability to prove anything one way or the other, will the presumption of innocence still be intact for me by the end of the day Monday?

Edit: For anyone who happens to read this in the future (as unlikely as that is), the trial was today. Not Guilty. The whole courtroom was happy when the verdict came through. The system nearly fucked me, but common sense came through in the end. Everyone could see right through those bitches.

So we're OK with rape victims being perceived as false accusers because it's acceptable for a rape accusation to be made on a non-rapist.

I'm not. I believe rapes should be investigated as potential terrible crimes, that the justice system should be used to help crime victims and punish criminals, not be used as an attack on non-criminals for philosophical purposes.
