Imagine the (I'd say justified) outrage if a group of people put up billboards that said "Teach your daughter to respect men" with an image of a young girl in a hoodie with the words "AWAITING INSTRUCTIONS" over her chest. It's disheartening that these people don't see the double standards they impose on others or their hypocrisy.

Imagine a world where parents taught their children the differences between respect and courtesy.

Real respect must be earned. Given respect can be disingenuous but it's always worthless and rather misleading even if well-intentioned. Being the best at anything will always be a higher achievement than merely showing up.

Courtesy is considered either social convention or "good form" but should really be decided by the person or persons in a position to offer courtesy. Though it ought not to be forced or mandated, it reflects the character of the giver.

The same goes for rights and entitlements. Not every culture or government recognizes and guarantees the same rights, but exceptional people will figure out ways to make their own names and reputations.

I like the "awaiting instructions" on the child's hoodie in the original ad. It's as if he were a drone without a mind of his own, incapable of discovering on his own or even understanding why inflicting harm on other people is bad. Certainly reflective of the feminist anti-intellectualist mindset of censorship— you will accept something as good/bad, and you will not question why it is.

I think the word "respect" in the admonition to "teach your son to respect women" has a special meaning. This is not earned respect, or respect as in the common courtesy and consideration you should have for anyone.

"Respect" in this case refers to whole sets of behaviors, and a specific mindset, that certain people (notably both feminists and traditionalists) believe a boy should be taught to have in regard to women.

According to them, women are to be treated with special manners, consideration, and deference.

Women are also to be given special protection by men — all the way from the serious, such as violence, all the way down to the trivial, such as them being exposed to any language that they might find offensive.

Behavior isn't enough. They want the boy to internalize a whole mindset that pedestalizes women and can't be truly critical of them, with the boy (then man) subconsciously rationalizing away anything that contradicts this view of women.

This is how "white knights" are created.

This isn't equality. It doesn't go both ways. You can easily imagine the feminist reaction to being told to "teach your daughter to respect men."

It's easy to explain how fucked up this is by rephrasing it this way:

"Would you find it racist if I said 'We need to teach all black children that stealing isn't ok.'"

Not that it would fit on the poster, but I think you should probably teach your kids to respect certain qualities, or perhaps just give people a default amount of respect before you get to know them. Though the creator was probably more focussed on the double standard than the specifics.

I think, maybe for the first time I understand why people complain about the "PC police." This is the first time it has annoyed the shit out of me.

Like it or not, but overwhelmingly domestic abuse and domestic violence comes from men. If you have a limited marketing budget and a problem that you would like to contribute to solving then putting up a billboard with some watered down message that is more PC friendly is pretty much a waste of money (and arguably this is a waste of money too but at least it hones in the message to your target group much better).

I know what the response will be "but what if we did that to black people!?" I think that is a bad comparison because race relations are not as delicate as sex relations. There aren't cities segregated by sex. Given that attribute then we can be more direct about addressing problems than we can with someones race. And probably no one would assume it was an attack from the other "side" like black people would feel attacked from other races.

In a perfect world the message "love everyone" would have everyone join hands and say "oh yea, that is such a good idea." However, we don't live there and instead because of the sins of our fellow men we must deal with having marketing messages targeted specifically at our sex. I understand that it feels bad man. Then again, I am a grown ass man who doesn't get his feelings hurt like most of this subreddit.
