The thing that annoys me the most is the ragging on the clothes (abahya I wanna say? I forget what it's called and calling it a dress is like calling a kilt 'a skirt'). I've lived in the desert. Unless you want to be burnt to a crisp (sunburn is an extremely common problem among westerners) it is more logical to cover your whole body with light cloth than to walk around naked. The men in those same countries also wear dresses that are almost identical. They are just usually a different color (black for female, white for male, though in some places it's the reverse). The main difference is typically just their headwear.

For the record, Hijab and Niqab and similar aren't usually made out of polyester, and are surprisingly comfortable. They're kind of perfect for the desert (though I've never understood why anyone would use black, the vast majority of veiled women I saw in Egypt used light colours), and you'll notice that the men wear remarkably similar clothing
