When did men first have to be desirable/likable?

One big talking point I’ve consistently seen online the last ten or so years

“This is the first time in history men have had to actually be like-able to get a women, where women can say no, and is you see guys don’t know how to handle that”

The implication is prior to “this time” guys didn’t have to get a girl to think he was great or likable, women were essentially assigned to you if you had a full time job. You laugh but people have said this basically word for word lol

1.)I always ask when did “this time” start though from these people and I never get a direct answer though. For example I’m a millennial born in 1988, so is it generation X the generation prior to me were men first had to be desirable to women?

2.)So if you were a gen X man born in 1967 when you started dating in the 80’s you didn’t have to be desirable to women you dated? Men didn’t try to improve their looks/games/status back then? This is just a 2014 thing? What about boomers, my parents Met in the 1970’s, was my mom just handed off to my dad or did he have to convince her he was worth it?

3.)if we are to agree that this was/is a actually a thing, it certainly apply to people who are alive and in relationships lol. Whether the woman is 18 48 or 78. The guys they are all with had to convince those women that they were desirable or good to them. They had a choice to say no or yes. Maybe their great grandma who would be 128 today if she was alive this applied to but not them

Heck Most men even today aren’t even likeable or desirable yet most men have been in some type of relationship lol.

So again my question to the lovely people of PPD, what do you think of this talking point? Is this the first generation of men who had to be desirable to get girls? If not when did it start?
