A sympathetic, feminist leaning friend actually told me she hates when feminists say "Check your privilege", because, as she admits it's a tactic feminists use to shut down conversation with men.

Almost seems like that last privilege point is a privilege of feminists, not specifically of women only. Male feminists seem to get away with it also.

The whole 'privilege' debate feels dirty and misleading, even when reversed onto the accusers. We're all individuals. Our lives and experiences are defined by a complex variety of factors most of which effect each other in countless ways. We experience favorable or unfavorable events randomly, sometimes simply by living in different areas. To say that all members or one race or gender hold any privilege is a crass generalization, one that borders on racism/sexism or at least shares the same level ignorance. It commonly ignores the disparity within a group and ranks everyone by an average.

The worst part about the focus on 'privilege' is that it shifts the mindset to bringing people down rather than removing discrimination. These kind of people honestly believe that every fat girl joke needs to be met with a equally scathing remark towards skinny girls. Regardless of whether or not the girl was personally involved in the original discrimination in the first place. It becomes a goal to create a world of equality through discrimination towards everyone rather than a world without discrimination. Worst of all is when 'privileges' are fabricated outright and used to justify something that is for all intents and purposes, pure discrimination.

Don't forget men are still expected to move heavy things at work. I love this because I always refuse saying "equal pay for equal work".

On one hand its nice to see that women (even feminists) are starting to realize that things have tipped so deeply in the other direction that things are becoming imbalanced and unfair towards men (in some ways).

On the other hand, I can't help but be disgusted with the padded gloves that she's using to discuss the issue. All of the things that she mentions slanted and biased, they don't even BEGIN to touch on real issues like millitary draft and inequality in prosection.

It delicately sidesteps around the issue of sexual assault by softening it down to her ability to harass someone rather than overtly engaging in physical abuse, and it deliberately offers only a domestic situation where BOTH parties are physically assaultive even though we know there's a substantial portion of domestic violence issues that are exclusively a female attacking her male spouse.

The article also deliberatelly glosses over all of the possible pernicious applications of that priviledge, like using it to make false accusations of assault or sexual harassment, or choosing to use the court system to get a serious upper hand in divorce through manipulation of our child support, alimony and domestic violence laws to attack what little civil equality we have left.

It assumes that even women who use their priviledge are inherrently good people and would never deliberately use it to commit a crime or destroy someone's life.

Is this an indicator that, after the recent drama, they may be starting to wake up to the fact that there is no appeasing a feminist, and that supremacy movements will accept nothing short of total unconditional surrender?

The best part of that article is the focus on equity. It's the phrase we should be using. Equality will never happen, it's impossible. That's why abusive feminists love it. It's a cudgel. No matter how good things are, they can find at least one area where things aren't "equal". Equity is basic fairness. It accounts for the reality that distinguish our genders and the fact that sometimes different is good. It's a term the MR community should embrace and use far more often.

So whenever people link to blogs articles about male privilege to prove a point, looks like we can do the same thing.

And since they treat those long blog diatribes as complete proof of their beliefs they will have no choice but to now see our point too. I mean if they can use a blog to prove a statement, then they have to be reasonable wh... hahahaha

If I write an inflammatory comment, or a blog, or article, and a man questions anything in it, all I need to do to shut the conversation down is call him a bully, or say he’s a privileged male.

Maybe I am missing something but I don't see how making oneself the victim is supposed to be empowering. Feigning hypersensitivity "wins" the day?

The pendulum has swung the other way, but not too far.

1 I agree with to an extent. Sexual orientation is a little easier for women. Women are ok to make lewd comments about men around other women, but around men it's still seen as uncomfortable, though more easily dismissed than when a man does it to a woman.

2 Here in Canada people are becoming more aware of it but it's still not at the point it should be. It's not as easy for a man to come forward. There are women's shelters set up in cities across the country but there is inadequate or no support setup for men who are in abusive relationships.

3 Again, in Canada it's better than it was 20-30 years ago. The laws are at least gender neutral and outcomes of divorce are encouraged to be equal as well. In practice this isn't always the case but it is getting better.

4 I've only ever received encouragement for my education and career . Women who choose to take the "traditional" homemaker role are given a harder time, mostly by other women.
