why can't an overweight guy date a a girl who works out 5 times a week? what an absolutely retarded premise to base an article on.

[–]CriticalH 1812 points1813 points1814 points 8 years ago (524 children) | Copy Link

It's the double standard that a lot of overweight people will have. They often demand to be respected in regards to their bodies and or habits and yet they also demand to be accepted by people who have no interest in their body type and who live a very different lifestyle. The cognitive dissonance is just too much.

[+]schmirsich1 points 8 years ago [recovered] (332 children) | Copy Link

Please don't conflate all overweight people with the people writing articles like these. The vast, vast majority of overweight people are not happy or proud about being overweight. All overweight people I have ever known, including myself, do not want to be this way, but are mostly too weak to change it.

r/loseit. You can do it man. For me, the hardest part was getting started. But once you get in to a routine and get used to eating less and working out, it's a lot easier than you might think. Just remember, diet is 90% of it. Working out is encouraged, but as long as you have your diet down you'll lose weight. Calculate how many calories you need, and then download MyFitness Pal and get after it. It's worth it bro, trust me.

Good advice on losing weight and dieting from /u/cookiepizza54

[–]willfordbrimly 59 points60 points61 points 8 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link

He cooks it, he doesn't order it. It's probably very healthy homemade pizza.

[–]Bigyellowone 39 points40 points41 points 8 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

No it's a cookie pizza!! But he probably doesn't eat it, heathen.

[–]flabbybumhole 40 points41 points42 points 8 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

No he cooks Internet Explorer pizza. It's like a normal pizza, but you add the ingredients at the wrong time because fuck standards.

[–]ImAOneTrackLover 12 points13 points14 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I really like Mozilla pizza. You get yourself some fox meat, cook it with fire. Absolutely delicious.

[–]cookiepizza54 10 points11 points12 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I can confirm that I do not eat cookie pizza. I was creating a Reddit account and couldn't think of a user name. A commercial for Papa John's cookie pizza came on t.v., and thus my username was born.

[–]Saucermote 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

But Grizzlebee's deliver's and he can get a free order of Cookie Bread.

[–]benihana 5 points6 points7 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

you can eat pizza and cookies on a diet and still easily maintain your weekly calorie budget. just like you can eat out for dinner from time to time and still maintain a budget.

[–]MarinoNY 25 points26 points27 points 8 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

Please listen to him, even his user name was cookiepizza when he signed up for reddit . This man has recovered from a hopeless state of mind and body .

P s thank you, I fluctuate way too much . I am 6 foot 1 and I do struggle from fluxating from 280 to 230. If I could weigh 210 I’d Ben so happy man .

Also, Terry Crews has some advice that I thought was fantastic: when you start going to the gym, don't do anything. Just read a magazine, play games on your phone, socialize, etc. But don't work out. Keep doing this until you look forward to gym time. Then start hitting the weights. The reason for doing this is if you go your first time and you walk out all sore and hurting, you're going to have a negative experience and it'll be hard to get the motivation to go again. Instead, build the routine of going to the gym, then start lifting weights.

[–]xX420CorgiSniper69Xx 46 points47 points48 points 8 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

He said something that worked for me in the first few months before it became a routine activity for me.

Even if you don’t want to work out you have to go to the gym. If you go in and immediately turn around and go home that’s fine, but you have to go.

I think these little rules we make can help. I make them for myself.

He also does intermittent fasting which I’ve been doing for two years and found very helpful.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points9 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

It also helped me a lot to have a friend there. Especially a more experienced friend who already developed the habit. For years I went with a friend and within a few months of working out with him I would have the confidence to go alone. I have never had a bad experience at the gym either. Every person that saw I became a frequent talked to me and gave me advice and offered spots, and even to work out with them from time to time.

It is a beautiful companionship and it helped me get over so many of my habits. I looked forward to meal preps, to gym time, to everything the way I looked at pizza and games back in the day.

[–]xX420CorgiSniper69Xx 10 points11 points12 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

The part that many people can’t really understand without experiencing it is how after a while you just don’t think about not going anymore.

It’s just part of my daily life.

Like sleeping and eating.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yes. I can even understand why people are negligent because at first it seems like a lot of hardwork, which it is. Nothing super easy about breaking years of habits, but like you said, it becomes a daily part of your life.

I'm at a point where I can barely remember waking up late since I now run every morning.

[+]Justinokay1 points 8 years ago* [recovered] (1 child) | Copy Link

Did he make a video series and say these in an interview? Where can I read more?

[–]xX420CorgiSniper69Xx 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

He’s got a YouTube channel. Dude is a great guy and very smart.

[+]Kayakingtheredriver1 points 8 years ago [recovered] (1 child) | Copy Link

That is a rule that helps in 2 ways. It gets it conditioned that you go to the gym on gym day no matter what. Even with the If you go in and immediately turn around and go home that’s fine allowance, you will likely work out even still because fuck, you took the effort of going to the gym, might as well not waste it.

[–]xX420CorgiSniper69Xx 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I think the another thing to recognize is that someone like Terry Cruise started somewhere and that, even now, he got there not out of crazy motivation but by discipline and making rules for himself to get him going.

[–]Sub_Corrector_Bot 60 points61 points62 points 8 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

[–]Kintarly 8 points9 points10 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I can guarantee the hardest part is getting over that first hump. Starting. But once you start, it's easy going. Everyone hits that mental block that says they can't lose weight, and once you pass it, it's just about establishing the discipline and the habit.

My fitness pal is essential to me. I'm down almost 40 in 140 days because of calorie counting.

/r/loseit is a fantastic and supportive community of people like us. Plus I like having my lost weight in my flair.

[–]cookiepizza54 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Right. Once you take the jump and get in to a routine, you just start to lose weight on cruise control.

My issue is i honestly don't eat much but i find myself starving later throughout the day so i just stuff my face with shitty food.

any food you think can help with that?

[–]cookiepizza54 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Yeah for sure man. Look for stuff that's high in protein. Eggs, chicken breast and beef jerkey are my favorites. I also like diet soda and sunflower seeds to help cravings. r/1200isplenty has cool recipe ideas as well. Like I said in the original comment, I really recommend checking out r/loseit. They have all the info you need to figure out how many calories you need and how to stay under it. Just remember that losing weight comes down to calories in vs calories out. If you know exactly how much you need and track it properly, losing weight becomes way easier.

[–]themolestedsliver 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

1200 is plenty looks amazing.

thank you for your advice.

[–]cookiepizza54 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

No problem. If you need any more advice at any time, feel free to PM me. I've actually lost significant amounts of weight twice in my life, so I can defintley relate.

[–]themolestedsliver 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yeah, i have maintained this weight for a most of my life and have tried losing it but i find whats the point of making an effort to work out when diet is the main reason someone is overweight.

But i am trying to cook more for myself and be independent, might as well add healthy and fit to that as well.

thank you again :).

[–]motdidr 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

counting calories is so easy and very illuminating. when you're looking at something that's like 500 calories and then think about how many vegetables you could eat instead for a fraction of the calories, it just gets easier and easier. not always and it can be difficult, but having hard numbers just goes such a long way.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

If you want to lose weight but like food the best advice I can give is excersize a shit ton and make the food worth it when you eat it. I'm down 130lbs, put on tons of muscle and still for the most part eat anything I want.

But I stopped eating junk thwt is literally junm. Why eat a hoho when I can eat some dank Chocolate. Why eat crap fast food when I can make a steak and blooming onion at home and crush the fuck out of it properly.

Want to eat ice cream? Then eat it. Then go on a 10 mile bike ride to pay for it. Get to the point where eating a crap brownie isn't worth it cause rs crap as fuck. Eat a food brownie and then you feel like youre actually earning a future

I'm about to eat bacon cheese fries and burgers for dinner. I also just did 15 miles on my bike just shopping and running errands. 800 calories for me to splurge on now

TLDR

Unless you're super over weigh don't listen to people going on and on about dieting being everything. Learn to burn shit tons of calories by slightly changing the way you live. Walk the stairs. Don't ever use an elevator. Park at the end of the lot, carry your food when shopping, do pushups while youre waitin for your coffee, while waiting for the bathroom. While waiting for your game to losd. Do anything. Make moving your body the norm not the exception.

You know who is neve fat? The person thst never sits still

[–]IAmNotWhoever 3 points4 points5 points 8 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link

For me, the hardest part was getting started.

Agreed.

diet is 90% of it

Not for me. Cutting out alcohol and cardiopulmonary exercise is what works.

Calculate how many calories you need, and then download MyFitness Pal and get after it.

Alot of people like the structure of weight watchers.

[–]cookiepizza54 22 points23 points24 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Cutting alcohol is part of diet tho. I cut out alcohol almost entirely as well, and it's insane how many calories you save.

[–]FireHazard11 4 points5 points6 points 8 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

The point is that it's easier to eat 1,000 calories less than normal than it is to burn 1,000 calories through exercise. One takes 0 seconds and the other takes 80 minutes of exercise.

[–]justin_says 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

everyone is different.. some need to diet, some need to excersize (and some like me need to do both). and different diets work for different people...

but getting started is the hardest part for everyone. and trying something no matter how small is better than trying nothing...

[–]IAmNotWhoever 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

but getting started is the hardest part for everyone. and trying something no matter how small is better than trying nothing...

Agreed, but for me at least, getting out and walking is the easiest way to get started.

[–]atheistpiece 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I'm a firm keto believer. After a decade of being my groups token fat guy, I started doing keto. I'm down 45 pounds after about two months.

I look, and feel better. Another nice side effect was that my beard started filling out more so I look good instead of like I got mange on my face.

[–]Rocko9999 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I'd give it a go. It took care of all of my blood sugar fluctuations and cravings-which I have struggled with since a teenager. I am losing weight and my blood work numbers all improved. Really worth a shot.

[–]chadwickofwv 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

It works great. I've lost 40lbs since April on it. I'm not doing the extreme version though. I'm keeping my carbs below 50g per day instead of less than 20g needed to go into ketosis. It's not an all or nothing type of thing.

[–]Haokah226 6 points7 points8 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Yep, pretty much this. Also as a fat guy I am very aware that even overweight women don't find me attractive. I realize that I will likely be alone until I find the motivation and strength to change, but it really has been hard to find it. It's the biggest struggle I have in my life and honestly... I hate it. It hate it so much that it makes me hate myself.

[–]Klutzkerfuffle 49 points50 points51 points 8 years ago* (186 children) | Copy Link

Forks Over Knives and Barefoot running. You can get a body you never had before. I have lost 30 pounds over the past year, and I wasn't what you would consider fat. Kinda fat.

Try it. Your body will love it. You won't need as much sleep either.

Edit: Wrote this sincerely in the comments below. I am not an expert. Just a self-experimenter.

I have watched my poor grandmother fall and break bones numerous times. Her feet are terrible from high heels.

I was running (in shoes) and had a painful dislocated bone in my foot. These things prompted me to go searching for some answers.

The conclusion that I came up with is that I think humans need to run on their bare feet on the surface of the earth. It's an authentic action. I did read Born to Run, but I have other sources. I certainly think this guy is on to something.

https://youtu.be/EszwYNvvCjQ

So I have been at it for around one year. My feet used to get destroyed. Took about three months to get enjoyable, but now my entire lower leg is hard as a rock. My feet are bigger and wider. I can almost get up on point like a ballerina. My gait is different. My thighs are smaller, interestingly. And my quads never get sore when I run. My feet never hurt except for if I go for a really long run. I run on almost all surfaces. I also wear minimalist footwear daily. I did shove my feet in some dress shoes for a wedding, but it wasn't too bad.

Forks Over Knives is a documentary that may be on Netflix still. Two old doctors make the case that meat and dairy give us heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. I have been eating like this for also approximately a year. Wow. Lost weight immediately and have kept it off. I also feel like I have the power to run because I am not digesting all that bullshit. I recommend that stuff wholeheartedly.

Edit 2: I know this may seem counterintuitive, so please bear with me and give it some thought... Barefoot running may be less likely to cause injury than running in shoes for an obese person. Your feet will give you nautral feedback on your stride. Shoes will dampen it. If an obese man needs to start with a diet and a walk around the block in minimalist shoes, then so be it. But I would get that stride right from the beginning.

[–]dutch_penguin 280 points281 points282 points 8 years ago (100 children) | Copy Link

I don't think running is that good of an idea for obese people actually. Running with a lot of weight probably puts a lot of stress on the body in more ways than one. Swimming and fork put downs are two great exercises for the famine resistant.

Former morbidly obese guy here...

You're 100% right. There is no way to comfortably run or jog when obese like that. It is terrible for your joints and it's a matter of time before you hurt yourself and get sidelined and potentially give up.

It also has the issue of convincing people that exercise is the key, whereas diet is the only thing that actually matters.

[–]atheistpiece 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I tried couch to five ka couple times and it fucking sucked. The shin splints would sideline me for too long and made me miserable. I eventually switched to swimming and now biking. Both are much more comfortable.

[–]Plasmabat 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I recommend just getting a decently cheap mountain bike and riding that around places where there aren't a lot of cars or people walking and just go as fast as you can. I think that the key to consistently exercising is finding something that you enjoy doing that is also physical activity.

[–]abrotherseamus 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I totally agree. When I first started losing weight I stuck to ellipticals, stationary bikes, rowing machines or treadmills at low speed with a super high incline. Also lots of resistance and flexibility training.

Tried running when I got down to 250 and it crushed my knees no matter what I tried to mitigate that.

I'm at a healthy weight now, and I've delved into that world again and the difference is night and day. No real joint pain, no nagging shin splints.

The real thing that worked for me was not getting married to a routine, especially when I was fat.

[–]Daemonicus 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I think that the key to consistently exercising is finding something that you enjoy doing that is also physical activity.

Psychologically speaking, you're right. It makes a huge difference when you aren't dreading your upcoming workout session.

[–]therealdrg 10 points11 points12 points 8 years ago (14 children) | Copy Link

You can use exercise as a crutch to make up for a crappy diet.

The only thing that matters is calories in versus calories out. You could eat 4000 calories a day if youre burning off 2600 of them.

[–][deleted] 16 points17 points18 points 8 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

You can use exercise as a crutch to make up for a crappy diet.

Technically you can, but it's not realistic. It's much harder to drink a 20 oz Coke and then jog enough to burn it off, than to just not drink that 20 oz Coke to begin with. Most people aren't going to do enough exercise to make up for a crappy diet, which is why cutting calorie consumption is the best way to lose weight.

[–]J354 3 points4 points5 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Exercise does more than just burning x amount of calories in the time you are exercising. It increases the metabolism, but more importantly imo it is good for your mental health. A lot of obesity is a result of effectively food addiction, which ultimately is down to the brain.

[+]upsidedownbackwards1 points 8 years ago [recovered] (1 child) | Copy Link

I used exercise as a crutch for years without knowing it. I was devouring about 3000 calories a day in total garbage but I ran everywhere, I was always on my feet for work, I was pretty active. My diet was mostly breadsticks and 5-6 liters of cola a day. When I got a desk job that required me to drive to work instead of running it caught up with me FAST. Went fro 160lbs to 265lbs in 5 years.

Why not go swimming? I understand fear of being made fun of. But pool exercises are by far the best way to lose weight for morbidly obese people.

[–][deleted] 54 points55 points56 points 8 years ago (26 children) | Copy Link

If calories in < calories out you WILL lose weight. It's not maybe, resistant, or anything else. It's science, fact, and cares not for feelings.

[–]AirFashion 45 points46 points47 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You're gonna wanna read that again, he's referring to overweight people as being "famine resistant"

[–][deleted] 15 points16 points17 points 8 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

I think doing stuff is more important than finding the best stuff.

It's not hard to figure out, it's hard to get started. Don't let figuring out the best thing to get in your way.

Know someone who runs? Talk to them, do some running. I think most runners will tell you they couldn't run around the block once (I know I couldn't my first time).

Know someone into archery? Join them. Baskeball? Great.

Don't let thinking get in your way.

Go for a walk for an hour. I listen to podcasts.

It is difficult, but you're stronger than you think.

Oh my god, yes. Just ask anyone that completed boot camp. There were multiple points when I would have sworn I couldn't do any more, and then my body did whatever they were telling me to do (pushups, burpees, whatever) your body can take way more punishment than you think.

I remember listening to a podcast by a navy seal and he talked about the 40% rule. Basically when you think you are done and can't do anything more. You really have about 40% left that you have to push to use.

[–]xX420CorgiSniper69Xx 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yup. Got into fitness a few years ago because I was 50 lbs overweight.

Started eating less and waking 30 min a day. You gotta start with what you can manage, and try lots of activities in the beginning. But if someone ever asked me to do something that involved moving my body I said yes.

Fat tire biking, running, hiking, frisbee golf, mountain biking, whatever. And people will find the things they like along the way.

I quit smoking, was a moderate drinker, now I rarely drink at all. Certainly not regularly. Lift 4 dats a week, cardio 2. Count my macros and eat about 90% vegetarian now. Hoping to make that higher.

Many will find things they like and many will get to some healthy level of living if they just took it slow and made change. And then when that small change isn’t hard anymore, make another one.

People go into this with the sprint mindset. What’s the best most effective diet and exercise?!?! What’s the quickest route?

The quickest route is the one you can manage. And that’ll be more each day if you try.

I walk into the gym like it’s my home now, it’s like my quiet alone place. It’s a sanctuary.

First time I went into a gym I walked around in a circle and got on the treadmill because I knew how to use it. And little else. First time I did squats (terribly wrong I’m so sure) with a 45 lb bar while other men are lifting 250+

Very humbling.

But when I see that kid coming in skinny as hell lifting the bar when he squats I know what that was like. Sure, I’m very comfortable there now, but I still remember being that kid. It was only a few years ago.

Yeah i was like 200lb 5'9! Male, not super fat but not healthy, and i got 5 stress fractures trying to run off the weight. Stick to the stationary bike/steppers until u drop some of the pounds

[–]Snokhund 8 points9 points10 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

200 pounds isn't that horrible on a 5'9" man's frame, although I assume that your weight was to a large part fat, which also meant that it probably wasn't used to the stress, because I've known heavier men at the same height to not have any real problems running, but they are mostly muscle, so their bodies are used to working.

Barefoot running is probably a bad idea. You don't want to run over a piece of glass and get an infection. "Barefoot shoes" are probably a better idea, since they protect your feet without being like full shoes - they're essentially just a protective barrier between your feet and the ground.

[+]dcblJack1 points 8 years ago* [recovered] (3 children) | Copy Link

Hmmm yeah. Overweight people are already prone to neuropathy from diabetes and such (not all, just obesity IS a risk factor), maybe run with shoes so you don't impale your foot in something sharp and end up with some infectious disease or tetanus, or develop some sort of gangrene...

Just, RUN WITH SHOES.

[–]kentheprogrammer 7 points8 points9 points 8 years ago (14 children) | Copy Link

Why specifically barefoot running? I agree with you - and a variation of plant based diet and running helped me lose considerable weight - just curious about the barefoot part.

[–]imdevonbutler 5 points6 points7 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

To suggest that everyone can get away with barefoot running/forefoot strike is just silly. I understand that it worked for you, and also for myself on most training runs, but it requires certain body mechanics and form that a small percentage of the population has. Especially telling somebody that's overweight, it's just another obstacle to climb.

Start slow regardless of what you're wearing. If you find after time that's what you prefer, and can get away with, than do it. It often takes years to learn what you prefer and require. It's also more than just what feels good on foot.

Everybody needs a different level of support, some none, some a lot. Everybody needs a different level of cushion, some one, some a lot.

Yeah, but carbs are delicious. What you eat is less important than how much you're eating vs how active you are. If you want a cheeseburger, go eat that cheeseburger. Don't eat 3 of them. Go for a walk around the rec center indoor track. Heck, take some tunes and do a little dance around the track. Don't be ashamed for eating food you love. Just eat less of it and eventually your body will need less of it.

Seriously. A year ago I could put away a whole medium pan pizza myself. Now, I can eat maybe 2 pieces, 3 TOPS, before I can't eat anything. Just limit yourself.

I love how much more rested I feel with fewer hours of sleep when I have followed FoK or some other plant based framework. Add onto that the increase in mental acuity and it is a small wonder why this movement has not garnered more followers.

I still find it hard to believe we shouldn’t eat meat though. Humans have eaten meat throughout history. My guess it that we just eat too much of it, causing a balance of some kind to be off.

[–]Dcoco1890 9 points10 points11 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I think it has more to do with all the sugar they cut out of their diets with the FoK lifestyle. Almost everything that is made to be consumed by Americans has added sugar or some sort of sugar substitute. I cut my sugar intake way back and increased my intake of meat and vegetables and I've never felt better in my life.

[–]Demdolans 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I get the impression it's more about limiting meat intake. There is no way we're programmed to eat a full meat meal 5x a day.

[–]Calls_out_Shills 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Because you think it's a movement and not just being a vegetarian and exercising.

You've made an identity of it, and most people don't. Most folks who eat well and evercise don't need a group identity, so you're not going to find them identifying with your FOK community unless that's their thing.

At the end of the day, the activity isn't unique enough or specialized enough for the movement to form.

[–]Sir_Steben 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I had horrible foot pain while running track back in high school, went to doctors, tried every orthopedic shoe and insert you can imagine. Nothing helped. Did the same research as you and came to the same conclusion. Shoes are terrible for our feet, they basically baby our muscles and tendons and weaken them. Started walking/running bare foot as much as I could, did wear shoes all through college. My feet are now also stronger, pain free and my legs, especially calves have changed and become more muscular. Highly recommend.

Also for overweight people, they don't even have to run barefoot They can start out walking.

This. I'm overweight. I'm working on it, but I like food. I'm dropping pounds slowly. Obesity isn't something that just happens to most people. Some diseases can make it very difficult to control your weight, but this isn't common. A normal functioning adult is absolutely capable of controlling their weight. They weren't just made obese and have to live with it. They lack the self control, commitment, and guts to make it so. That applies to me as well. Let's stop the pity party "Oh no, I'm fat". As others have pointed out... Women are attracted to things like social status, wealth and power (which indicates security + stability) , masculine looking men (indicates good protectors) , and also looks...etc etc...

Where as men are mainly attracted to youth and beauty (indicating good child rearing capabilities).

These things are hard wired into us through evolution. I know it’s the new status quo to act like men and women are exactly the same, and that the only differences are individual... but to try and deny that men and women are biologically different is just plain ignorant for the sake of political correctness.

While we are all individuals and have our own preferences, ... you can still clearly observe patterns in behavior, preferences, interests , etc between the genders.

You left out a word.

They want to THINK they feel better about themselves. Meaning, they are lying to themselves.

When searching the title of the post, the only thing that comes up (other than forum discussions about the image from OP) is a post from a website called whisper.sh. The post is just a bunch of those anonymous "confession" images, so there is no actual content to it, other than the anonymously made images.

And in reality, there are a few of them that say just what you are saying, and there is one that says to them it is about the intent to get in better shape.

refusing to settle and date overweight men

So they admit that dating a fat person is "settling"? What about all the "'curves' are beautiful; bones are for dogs", implying that fat people are just as if not more beautiful?

Then again, I guess "curves" are only beautiful in women

I think fat women can refuse to date fat men if they want, just like a fat man can refuse to date fat women. But they shouldn't expect to have many options. Fat women refusing to date fat people, then demanding or expecting that most thin men ought to have any interest in them is just pure hypocrisy

What pisses me off with this isn't their preference, but how the article sympathizes with them, while men (even fit, healthy, thin men, let alone fat ones) who refuse to date fat women are condemned as misogynists

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points7 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Agreed...I'll never understand it. Like attracts like. Why would a healthy person who exercises daily, eats consciously, and goes light on the substances be attracted to someone who is sedentary, eats their emotions, and drinks heavily? We ultimately want people that we can share experiences with, so having no common ground in lifestyle is a death sentence for a relationship. Obviously there will be some wiggle room, but if someone wants to attract healthy relationship partners, then they have to be at least somewhat healthy themselves. A lot of people in the age of online dating aren't realistic about their options, and often don't give enough credit to the ones they actually have.

Regardless, I think anyone can find someone in their league that they're very attracted to. It's just a matter of having realistic expectations, actually meeting enough people to find them, and being mature enough to not fuck it up too bad.

fit, healthy, thin men... who refuse to date fat women are condemned as misogynists

Yeah, it's still worth it. Being called a misogynist is meaningless when you can score chicks with abs and a thigh gap. The misogynist label basically translates as sour grapes. The fat broad can't have you so she tries to flip the narrative. It's actually satisfying in a way...

[–]Mikkkkee 522 points523 points524 points 8 years ago (33 children) | Copy Link

I work a lot with fat men and women who try to better their lives, and what i noticed is that men tend to be more direct about their situation, most will tell you directly "I'm sick of being a fat fuck", with girls it usally goes, "i just wanna have fun, train, MAYBE lose little weight" they always want to sugarcoat it.

[–]tortillastomper 1075 points1076 points1077 points 8 years ago (14 children) | Copy Link

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points9 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

My follow-up to that is usually showing the nay-sayers how much I lift. Then they say something along the lines of, "Wow. You don't look that strong." Then I tell them, "Exactly," as tears begin filling my eyes.

[–]ayovita 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The shitty part about that it that some are being made to feel that losing weight is evil, by other crabs. If you're hanging with the "right" groups you'll be told that losing weight means you hate yourself.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]tehfrog729 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

yes

[–]runfayfun 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I always got the impression that attaining a reasonable body shape is easier for men - in that we can lose weight and lift some weights, and because so much of our body image is just muscle tone, it's easier. For women, if they lose weight, often the breasts and ass shrink too. It's a harder balance for them, or at least it seems so. That being said, work on the pecs and glutes can negate some of the fat loss from a toning perspective.

But while there are real differences in how male and female bodies respond to weight loss, that's really no excuse to continue to carry around 50 pounds of excess fat.

[–]meellodi 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Idk, my ex is slightly overweight but she always said that she is "obese".

Seems like each woman has their own standard or something.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That's like saying they have their own standard for a bone fracture. Obese has a medical definition; it's not a matter of opinion.

[–][deleted] 785 points786 points787 points 8 years ago (43 children) | Copy Link

Here's some news. Men who aren't "overweight" don't want LAND WHALES either.

[–]positivecontent 227 points228 points229 points 8 years ago (37 children) | Copy Link

Here is the thing, I have looked into women's sizes before and converted them to men's sizes. Plus size women are obese, not overweight. Not only that but the average size woman is a size 16 to 18 in the USA. I'm overweight but if converted I can fit into an 16 to 18. So the fact that they say plus sized women don't want overweight guys is a bad usage in terms.

[–]rsqejfwflqkj 263 points264 points265 points 8 years ago (19 children) | Copy Link

Amen. "overweight" is kinda pudgy with a belly. The woman in the picture there is medically obese, not just overweight.

[–]Sattorin 174 points175 points176 points 8 years ago (12 children) | Copy Link

The woman in the picture there is medically obese, not just overweight.

The woman in the picture is almost certainly morbidly obese (more than 100lbs over her medically ideal body weight).

[–]pompr 65 points66 points67 points 8 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Yeah, I think for the most part people don't realize just how fat so-called "chubby" people are. When I was obese, people would say, "oh, don't worry, you're just chubby."

Then again, these were people who were obese themselves.

[–]mwobuddy 16 points17 points18 points 8 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

When a woman's panty line across the horizontal is just as long or longer than her thigh bone, its a major turn off. I've turned down a few women who were otherwise exceptionally pretty-faced because of that.. not proud of being shallow, but the thought of banging them was kind of like brain-itch. It just triggers something in the disgust circuit, I think.

[+]upsidedownbackwards1 points 8 years ago [recovered] (2 children) | Copy Link

The title should read 'fat women aren't attracted to fat men'. Fat is not a cuss word, there is nothing wrong with being fat (few health concerns maybe) and say the word fat. Fat is the new 'ni**er' eh?

And the article doesn't surprise me. Women tend to date/marry upwards with men out of their league (obviously #notallwomen). Women also tend to be more shallow in picking or choosing a mate compared to men. From my personal anecdotes, fat women (especially those with feminist leanings) tend to be pretty entitled. A (fat, feminist if it matters) woman once accused me of oppressing her for backing out on a date after she catfished me with photo-shopped images and turns out she lied about most others details too (like job, she was unemployed).

[–]positivecontent 91 points92 points93 points 8 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

[+]icandrive1551 points 8 years ago [recovered] (2 children) | Copy Link

From an individual health perspective you are right, being fat is bad for you. There is definitely something wrong with that. However so many people use it as a gauge for personality or character or worthiness as well. It's usually used for general scorn or mockery or believing they are less than human.

[–]kellykebab 5 points6 points7 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

[–]onelessplusone 31 points32 points33 points 8 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

I hate when people use anecdotal evidence like this, especially when it's directed at a group of people with nothing connecting them other than something they can't change, like sex.

Women tend to date/marry upwards with men out of their league

Women also tend to be more shallow in picking or choosing a mate compared to men

fat women tend to be pretty entitled

A woman once accused me of oppressing her for backing out on a date after she catfished me

Honestly your post is 4 trends that you've got no support for and one anecdotal story of one woman who lied to you. None of it is helpful and none of it can be argued against because you pulled these out of nowhere. Your comment is just voicing your anger at women without any sort of solution. [–]Mandarni 8 points9 points10 points 8 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link

Big and tall? Where did this "tall" come from?

Now I have heard obese men described as "big", at least if they are tall in addition to being obese, which is definitely more flattering than just "fat". But likewise women are sometimes described as big.

[–]Jikum 26 points27 points28 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Big and tall is often used in retail to describe the size of clothing for larger men

[–]Et_tu__Brute 13 points14 points15 points 8 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Big and Tall comes from a chain of stores (which has also become a section at stores). It catered to men who are too tall and/or fat for their sizes to be covered at the average gap or sears or whatever.

It is basically just a non-'conventional' sizes store. Although places like sears don't really carry clothes for skinny people anymore because people are fatter than when I was a kid, so what is 'conventional' has changed a bit.

[–]girlwriteswhat 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Not just tall and/or fat. My guy has consistently had problems finding suit jackets to fit his shoulders or with sleeves wide enough to get his biceps into. I would expect bodybuilders and football players to have similar problems, even without having a lot of fat on them.

[–]GoiterGlitter 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Retail sales of clothing. Same thing for plus-size. But somehow plus-size became an everyday word that some people fold into their identity.

[–]AxeOfWyndham 35 points36 points37 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I mean, go after what you want...

but understand that there are some caveats when you want these kinds of people and things:

1) Your expectations, while not impossible, are unrealistic. You are doing the relationship equivalent of looking for a house that is selling at half market value, and it's way more likely than not that when you finally get what you want it's not going to be the fairytale you want to live in. It's incredibly likely you are going to wind up with a guy who has lost any feeling of self worth, a guy who feels guilted into a relationship with you by feminist rhetoric or pity, or a guy who is just desperate for any kind of connection at all. The complete "man package" looking for a fat girl is going to be a needle in a haystack that you may never find. If you want a man who is confident, fit, intelligent, etc AND attracted to fat girls, the odds are you will die a dozen times over alone and smelling like cheese.

2) Understand, you are inherently looking for a man who spends his time doing pretty much all the things you don't. Let's say you DO find the unicorn. Guess what? His hobbies probably do not overlap much with yours. He does not eat the same food. He's probably not the kind of guy who wants to go with you to every kitschy restaurant where you had that UNIQUE dish that was sooooooooooooooooo yummy (aka a mound of brightly-colored sugar with the energy density of a plutonium pellet). He probably goes to the gym to do ACTUAL work instead of walking the treadmill at 2mph for 20 minutes and then anemically bicep curling the second-smallest weight on the rack for another 10 because sweat makes you feel unpretty. And understand in general that, when it comes to doing stuff as a couple, you will be the one who holds HIM back in every situation. He'd be able to rock climb, go on longer hikes, walk to a lot more tourist spots, etc if he had a fit girlfriend. Ultimately, assuming it succeeds, your relationship has 3 outcomes: (a) you just end up as an almost platonic couple that agrees to spend a lot of time apart and mostly only does things together at home. Not the saccharine Disney fairytale romance so many girls are looking for, more like cohabitating best friends with benefits. (b) you have to get in shape to keep up with what he wants to do (c) he is going to get fat doing what you do.

3) Understand that your standards are kind of going to be seen as a joke, right up there with weebs who only want Japanese partners, conceited women demanding sugar daddies on dating sites, and men who will only have sex with virgin bikini models. It's kind of shallow to basically come out and admit you wouldn't date yourself when you are looking for a relationship, especially if you aren't working towards becoming someone you WOULD date. It's almost hypocritical to expect someone else to be for you what you aren't willing to be, and it strongly implies you don't want these people out of a common interest, but because you want some arm candy.

So take interest in what you must. Maybe you legitimately can't lower your expectations because you're just wired to fetishize a certain kind of person or relationship, in which case I guess I pity you? It's your own damn fault though if you can lower your expectations and don't want to.

I mean there's plenty of overweight men who refuse to date overweight women. How is this a Men's rights issue?

[–]Roook36 27 points28 points29 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This is what third wave masculanism has devolved into.

Remember there’s a huge overlap between men’s rights, fat people hate, and the alt right. The agenda has shifted to just trying to get as many angry young men on that side as possible. And what pisses off young males more than anything? That women won’t have sex with them.

[–]ItsJustAJokeLol 8 points9 points10 points 8 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

You'd think if these users seriously cared about men's rights they would post and advocate about serious issues.

But nope it's just circlejerking about inconsequential bullshit like this that's more of an excuse to rage about evil women than it is to actually promote any men's rights issues.

[–]themolestedsliver 4 points5 points6 points 8 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Who's raging about evil women?

Most of this comment thread (if you paid attention and didn't skim) mainly focused on how double standard the issues are outlined in this article.

women aren't fat they are plus sized or curvy meanwhile men are stuck with fat and overweight.

It might seem inconsequential to you but it is honestly a large issue i didn't realize. there is a large movement for calling overweight women the new "sexy" words like "plus sized" and "curvy" being a highly used word.

There is also a movement for shaming guys who don't like the "curvy" and or fat women. Yet this article expresses it shouldn't be a two way street for some reason.

The only one who appears to be raging is you, with your preconceived idea of who we all are and the need for an argument so badly you had to come here and brigade despite clearly not caring about the topic at hand.

[+]tatostix1 points 8 years ago [recovered] (4 children) | Copy Link

So we're going to completely ignore the "dad bod" happening?

[–]themolestedsliver 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

As if that was actually in style.....

In my groups it was thought to be a joke, fathers are working so they can't devote intense time to going to the gym so they become out of shape into the stereotypical "dad bod" look.

To bring that up some justification is flimsy as hell and shows how informed you are in the situation.

[–]MusicTheoryIsHard 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

These women aren't fat/overweight they are plus sized meanwhile the men are still fat and overweight.

they refer to dating them as 'settling"

Just a lot of double talk with language sympathizing with "plus sized" women a bit to much.

[–]MusicTheoryIsHard 3 points4 points5 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

And there's plenty of guys in this comment section referring to overweight women as "land whales".

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points9 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That's just put there to not use "plus-size" twice in the title. In the second sentence men are called "plus-sizes" as well.

Nothing to see here.

[–]Puffy_Ghost 3 points4 points5 points 8 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I honestly don't see how this is a men's rights issue. :\

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

It's not. It's an attempt to attack the feminist argument that all women are beautiful and that it's sexist to have preferences.

Of course, it's not near as prominent a part of feminism as people seem to think. It's mostly just overweight girls complaining because they can't get a date. Just look at Tinder..

Anyway, not really a men's rights issue. It has nothing to do with "rights", only social failures.

[–]Puffy_Ghost 5 points6 points7 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Overweight men do this as well, it's completely understandable. People want a sexually attractive partner, even when you know you aren't.

[–]Trav2016 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

This is what I have been saying. I'm an overweight guy and I don't want to be with an overweight women it just doesn't work for me. I'm tired of being clumped together and told we fit together based solely on appearance and eating habits. Its 1000x harder for an overweight man to get a woman than a overweight woman to get s man. This is the one biggest reasons male suicide is so much higher than female suicide.

I know plenty of fit women who have big bear husbands. I also know thin guys who go for girls who are considered plus size. Everyone is allowed to have their own preferences, no one is being oppressed here. It’s a shitty opinion article, how does this represent oppression of men. Most women I know of all sizes go for the guys with a great personality, sense of humor and their own ambitions. What I usually see are guys and girls who want a relationship. But they have difficulties finding someone who’s in the same place in life as them, not necessarily their overall weight. Or they’re looking outside of that.

I gotta say, you listed some pretty important men's rights issues just now. Our disposability, our mental health issues. I always thought the men's rights movement was supposed to bring awareness and support for these larger, serious problems that a lot of us still have to (or at least feel that we have to) face alone.

In the grand scheme of things, shouting about an article regarding physical attraction just seems like a low priority. I wouldn't have expected something like this to gain so much momentum.

I never got upset when a skinny or muscular man turned me down because of my size. Everyone has their right to like what they like. However, you don’t have the right to hate on people for not liking your body type. A lot of the “curvy” or “Plus size” women get all butt hurt about a man not liking them because of how they look. I ended up marrying a heavy set man and we both decided to get healthy for our daughter.

I guess what I’m trying to say is, no one made you fat but yourself so shut up complaining when a dude turns you down because they don’t like fat girls and vise/versa.

To be fair, I partly blame guys who put all women on a pedestal, even overweight women and especially in online dating. They have no shortage of guys chasing their tail... maybe not the guys they want but they get plenty of attention nonetheless. It conditions them to believe they are the prize, and these double standards become a part of life.

[–]Ultramegasaurus 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

You're goddamn right. Despite women's lamentations, men are lenient as hell and have low standards. The thing is, women only really find a very small part of the male population hot and those hot men are indeed openly picky. In women's minds, that makes all men picky because they completely shut out the droves of average and below men from their perception.

There have been several online dating studies that show women think 80% of men are below average looking. Women's standards are ridiculous.

They sure do, but the point here is that for one gender some people like to use euphenisms and for the other they don't. I'm perfectly ok with calling both overweight or fat, or (if you're that kind of person) calling both plus-sized. However, sexism is using one type for one gender and another type for the other.

[–]William__F0ster 12 points13 points14 points 8 years ago (16 children) | Copy Link

for one gender some people like to use euphenisms and for the other they don't

To be honest, 'overweight' is as much a euphemism as 'plus-sized'.

If we swapped it round to say Fat women are "overweight" but fat men are "plus sized" I'm really not sure what distinction is being made.

Well, except for perhaps one which is women's dress sizes are more often related to their body shape (and weight) so although men can buy plus sized suits, being plus sized I would say is more often associated with fat women than fat men.

I really don't have a sense that 'overweight' carries a more negative connotation than 'plus sized'.

If anything, to my mind, it's the reverse - overweight seems to imply 'slightly' whereas plus seems to suggest more and therefore not slightly but very plump or fat.

[–]Rolten 12 points13 points14 points 8 years ago (15 children) | Copy Link

I think plus sized is more of an euphemism. Your doctor calling you overweight is perfectly normal and it's also the term used in the BMI scale.

Plus sized on the other hand is a friendly term used in the past couple of years for obese models.

[–]William__F0ster 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

Your doctor calling you overweight is perfectly normal and it's also the term used in the BMI scale.

This is true - however, the fact that it's a term used by medical practitioners does not mean it's any less of a euphemism for being fat.

It is in a health professional's (professional) interest to see a person gain and maintain a healthy weight - if being slightly coy about their being fat is part of that then so be it.

[–]PersonMcGuy 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

however, the fact that it's a term used by medical practitioners does not mean it's any less of a euphemism for being fat.

It's a literal description of the person not a euphemism. The person is over the healthy weight threshold hence overweight, overweight and "plus sized" are not the same things.

[–]William__F0ster 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

You have a good point there - however, two things:

1 A euphemism is "a mild or indirect word or expression substituted for one considered to be too harsh or blunt when referring to something unpleasant or embarrassing".

Therefore, it's the preferred term for health professionals with their clients precisely because it is not a pejorative.

If it's not pejorative, then it does not carry the negative connotation which OP is arguing for and therefore my point still stands.

2 Would the headline have been substantially different if both men and women had been referred to as "overweight" or had both been referred to as "plus sized"?

I'm pretty sure whatever answer you have to that, the majority view would be that "We mean they're fat".

[–]kickya72 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Fat people ruin furniture. I think that's one thing we can all agree upon.

[–]shaolin_cowboy 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This is ridiculous. I would add that the other hypocrisy that bothers me is women who are against body shaming and yet won't date short men. This one really bothers me. Also, all the short women only want to date tall men. We really live in a messed up world these days.

[–]crypticfreak 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Appears to be an oversight. The article even calls them plus sized men. That aside though, holy fuck what trash tabloid journalism.

This just in, people attracted to attractive people. More at 11.

[–]Ed98208 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I understand that we're all attracted to some people and not others, but why literally hate the ones you're not attracted to?

[–]_Tabless_ 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Call me crazy but I think people who have physical relationships should pursue partners they are actually interested in with the caveat that they should accept that certain preferences will limit their pool of prospective "fish in the sea".

But there's nothing wrong with someone who likes to dye their hair red preferring a partner who has "natural" hair or someone who never works out preferring muscular partners.

[–]koontang77 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You gunna get your mind blown but hold on.... fat dudes wanna screw fit people too.... boooooom.... it’s like they don’t wanna screw fat ladies either... truth is if our not happy with being fat put down the emotional eating food and start walking. I am no skinny person... I know why I am over weight. I know what I need to do to fix it... I am to much of a procrastinator to do it right now. Start small... start swapping water for sodas... get the side salad instead of fries.. I hope you all have a great day... may some level of happiness find you... peace out ✌️

[–]DoughNutsGoNutz 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Maybe being a selfish cunt is what keeps men away and not their waistline.

[–]ImALoneWolfBaby 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Same applies to some fat men though, I think its just shitty personalities. Bottom line is why would anyone who commits to taking care of themselves want to be with someone who can't put any effort in their own health let alone a relationship.

[–]gleaped 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]electricalnoise 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Meanwhile, any man that isn't into "plus size" fat women is just intimidated or couldn't handle a "real" woman.

[–]GonnaThrowItAwayMan 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

In all fairness I'm not attracted to overweight men either

[–]aged_monkey 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Fat guys are attracted to fit women and fit women are attracted to fit men. It's not rocket science. Y'all blow everything out of proportion.

[–]Pollyjuice22 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's an article written for fat women, of course it's going to pander to its target market.

[–]WadeTheWilson 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Well of course fat girls don't wanna date fat guys. Fat guys also don't wanna date fat girls. That should give these fat acceptance people a friggin clue... And I say this as a former obese man.

[–]godofleet 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]JackBond1234 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]TooManyDonuts84 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]JaggedSuplex 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I think "have your cake and eat it too" is applicable in a few ways here

[–]Rubberlemons 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

There is no reason to get upset by this. These fat women live in a self affirming fantasy land, and their ignorance only hurts themselves.

[–]Ewan_Robertson 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Overweight?? she looks morbidly obese lmfao.

[–]livinglitch 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Both need to stop being fat. Put some effort into yourself, count calories, by a few weights, and workout instead of complaining.

[–]DownGoOnMe 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

In my opinion, obese women just bought a one way ticket to virginity city.

[–]GimmeDatThroat 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I'm not for fat shaming, but this is fucked. Put that bitch on blast, what a load of trash.

[–]live3orfry 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

They are both overweight. Women are plus sized and men go to the big and tall store

[–]B_P_G 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I'm not surprised they're not attracted to overweight men. I mean I doubt many women are. But it's not like any men are attracted to overweight women so these fatties can refuse to settle all they want but that will likely leave them single for a long time. Either that or they're going to have to make some serious compromises in other areas.

[–]hoaobrook73 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

If you read past the title, about 2 or 3 sentences in, they use the term "plus sized men" after prior calling them "overweight" men. This equates the two within the article making the title choice nothing but a proper variety of adjectives and not the misandry it's being made out to be.

We can put away the pitchforks now.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]Gradytron 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]KingRobotPrince 5 points6 points7 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

refusing to settle and date overweight men.

Could you imagine the shit storm if a guy wrote an article about refusing to settle and date fat women?

It's sad when either gender overestimates their attractiveness and is unwilling to "settle" (date within their limits). I think it has to do with marketing and everyone chasing some sort of unobtainable ideal.

[–]zagthepimp 3 points4 points5 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]Blarty97 4 points5 points6 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]thefrdeal 3 points4 points5 points 8 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

I get what you're trying to say, but this really isn't much of an issue. Men being fat is okay. Men aren't expected to be tiny thin sex objects, and they therefore get tenfold less fatphobia. Men don't have a plus section, because being overweight is normal/okay. The general men's section usually carries up to 2x or 3x, meanwhile average sized women have to shop in a separate plus sized section. I get that you're trying to be good feminists by focusing on the issues of all sexes, but having your priorities be this one-sided really screams sexism. Just try not to judge before you step in a fat woman's shoes, okay?♥️

[+]FlowThru1 points 8 years ago* [recovered] (3 children) | Copy Link

The male version of the plus section is the "Big & Tall" area, or at least used to be.

It's pretty fucking comical that instead of addressing genuine issues where men are unfairly treated, like in divorce situations with child support and visitation allocation, that this kind of cherry picked bullshit makes the front page.

Congrats, the internet is big and you're gonna be able to find bullshit articles like this that fit the "men are treated unfairly" agenda. And guess what, you're getting baited for clicks and outrage.

That's why this sub is a fucking joke. You have a point, but instead seek out shit to say "this is so unfair!" You're looking for things to be offended about instead of organizing on genuinely worthwhile issues to seek change.

The left is known for coming up with dumb euphemisms for really bad things and then only applying them to women and minorities.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 8 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

How about some examples other than this?

[–]tehfrog729 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

"Undocumented immigrants" only being applied to brown Mexicans

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

[–]tehfrog729 5 points6 points7 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

"Nonbinary"

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I meant a different term being used for an illegal immigrant that isn't a Mexican or woman, and I don't know how nonbinary is a euphemism.

vs.

If a girl publicly said: "I don't like fat guys."

Oh yeah there's a difference in response.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

This is fine by me. Fat women are entitled to their preferences. And as far as I know men aren't forced to date fat women by law yet so what's the problem?

And don't tell me the problem is a double standard, the problem. It's no intentional, clearly these women are just incapable of making the mental connection that this is a double standard. We should honestly feel sorry for them because clearly they're not as intelligent as men., and never will be.

[–]snopaewfoesu 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

On one hand it kind of is a double standard, however on the other there are significant differences in what men and women prefer biologically/culturally etc. I've seen a lot of hot girls married to chubby guys, but I've only seen one hot guy married to a chubby girl. I've always dated uglier girls because I'm just a whore for personality. For one night stands I went with hotter girls. Not to say that the two are mutually exclusive, but averages show that we do have preferences as a species. From first world to third world countries this seems to be common.

Your comment about intelligence is off putting though. Did you mean overweight women in denial, or all women in general?

[–]SeaTwertle 4 points5 points6 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Turns out women can be just as shallow as men. Go figure.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]kbarney345 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

As a guy who's not obese but overweight I don't blame anyone but myself. I've had several great gfs and a few bad ones but by society's standards most would be 6 or 7 on a good day. I don't blame hot/fit women for not being attracted to me, if I was a rocking bombshell with a bod I wouldn't settle for shit, I'd want someone who's at least equal to me in effort and care for themselves. I'm not fat because of health problems or because it's OK I'm fat because I eat way to many sweets and sit on my ass whenever I'm not at work. I've just recently tried fixing it and walking 4 to 5 miles a day and eating more fish and salad has made all the difference. I had chronic fatigue and back pain and just felt lathargic constantly and that's almost all fanished just from a little walking and adding some things to my diet. Im not losing much weight but I feel a million times better. If you take the time to make yourself better then why should you be expected to settle with some overweight person who doesn't take care of themselves.

“refusing to settle”

[–]Thisusernameisdope 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I’m overweight, I weigh like 180 and I’m a 5’5 female. I mean Im just not attracted to obese men, I just kind of get disgusted by all of the access weight. However, I have no problem dating an OVERWEIGHT man who has a belly and some fat on him. I feel like most super fat people don’t want to be with another super fat person because it reminds them of themselves. It’s like looking in a reverse gender mirror.

[–]YeltsinYerMouth 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

They literally say plus-sized men a few sentences in. Stop making mountains of molehills and distracting from real issues. Focus on "microaggressions" is a good way to make sure people don't acknowlede your problems as legitimate.
