Reverse the roles and now the main character is a man who gets catfished by an unattractive woman. Do you think he’d fall in love with her personality? Hell no.

This is a new one to add to the list of tropes Hollywood loves to define women with.

Great message for women to settle for a liar, settle for someone you're not attracted to because personality. You know he wouldn't give her the time of day if she was unattractive.

Reversed, the girl is always super hot when she gets a makeover.

This film was AWFUL. It was like watching an early 2000s film with the tired trope of the late twenties woman who's whole life revolves around the fact that she can't find a bf. And somehow it ends with her apologising to everyone? Twice? Like I didn't understand why she had to make that big apology and why the guy thought it was wrong that she was writing about her experience of being catfished? Ugh. And of course the attractive guy had to end up sucking because we all know that ugly guys treat women better. /s

This movie had the chance to redeem itself IF it had an ending where the heroine said to the hot guy "You have very different interests than mine, I felt nothing when we kissed, we are not a good fit." and to the guy who catfished her "I'm not interested in you, I can't trust you after you catfished me, I appreciate your offer to help me get the hot guy, but I have spent all my life trying to find the "one" and being sad for being single. So I will take this opportunity to feel good about being on my own. I would advise you to do the same, you live in your parents basement, you are thirty years old, you work at your dad's store when you have a pretty nice idea for a new business, you need to focus on that."

I find it uncomfortable that they used an Asian man for the ugly guy. I like to see representation but it's well known that asian males have difficulties dating, did they really need to frame this character as a catfish who could never attract the female lead with his regular appearance?

I hated this trope already on that netflix film Sierra Burgess where it was a girl catfishing the highschool hot boy and doing all types of messed up things and being rewarded in the end, and I for sure hate it when it's the guy catfishing the girl and being rewarded in the end too. And also because I bet that this set up didn't get as much backlash as the first one I mentioned despite both being awful, because women are socialised to settle and give chances to liars they're not even attracted to.

Even before checking I could just tell this was directed by a man, and one who obviously understands nothing about women's expectations of the romance genre. This is why they should just leave it to women, because they come up with this sort of shit. As a romance author, I would NEVER put an ugly, unaccomplished, lying shit as the lead. Sorry but this isn't a romance film aimed at women, this is a comfort piece aimed at men.

Oh yes. I saw the trailer a couple days ago and wanted to share it here but didn't know how. The trailer basically summarized the entire movie and I could already tell from the start it was going to be one of those films. Sadly, no negative comments about how the guy catfished her and how selfish he was for doing that, and actual comments calling her a hypocrite for I guess changing her personality a little bit for the dude she was attracted to initially.

It was top 10 in my country so I watched it the front and the end of the movie. But that was more than enough.

I seen some comments in this thread and I don’t really understand why there are so many defending the Asian actor and his appearance? I don’t find the other guy good looking either subjectively.

But by conventional objective standards the Asian guy would not be seen as attractive. Men would relentlessly shame women for their appearance so this irks me.

While I’m not a fan of the trope, I feel like the main message here is that women are once again expected to settle for less and that appearance does not affect men be it romantic opportunities or career wise etc…

I am Asian in an Asian country so my views may differ quite a bit

Reminds me of "she's out of my league" where a dude at a dead end job gets a gorgeous very HVW to fall in love with him.

I honestly only watched it because I love that actresses work but the actual story made very little sense. She is well rounded, smart, and yet stupid enough to fall for a guy that brings very little to her life. " I don't care if you're a pilot, a TSA agent or scoop elephant shit, all I know is i miss you. "

Her friend calls it dating a "safe guy that won't hurt her". But he's not a safe guy. He's LVM and all his friends are LVM (when one meets her, he asks her if she's a prostitute and says his wife looks like a pig in comparison".)

Oh my gosh. I started watching this movie and I never finished because I knew how it was going to end. (Hot chick ends up with ugly dude who catfished her because hot guy had shit personality). Why is it always in Hollywood that hot guys can’t be smart, nice, and relationship material too? In Hollywood, only attractive women and ugly men have hearts of gold. Unattractive women are the bad guy, overweight women are used for comedy, and attractive men are used as dumb, shallow eye candy.
