But I've also seen a couple that aren't abusive in any way where someone just sees some value in their partner that nobody does.

I know a couple where the man is a turbo atheist, liberal SAHD and a 4/10 in looks at best. His wife is a fanatic Christian conservative, probably a 7.5/10, and also the breadwinner.

A former coworker of mine; she’s 5’9, skinny, fit, pretty, funny, accomplished and making a nice salary. I assume she doesn’t realizes she’s good looking because she often downplays herself and generally wears terrible fitting clothes. Her partner is more like 5’7, alcohol belly, mostly unemployed, and until recently lived at his moms house.

My neighbours; he’s a solid 7, she’s like a 3, very overweight, terrible skin, and only works part-time.

I assume in both cases is bad self-esteem.

One of my friends is 24, conventionally hot, thin, feminine, kind etc... She really could have her pick of the litter.

But she the last few guys she's been in LTRs with were overweight, broke, and very below average looking. One was almost twice her age. Definitely a case where them standing together would warrant a "damn, how did he get her?"

The thing is... while she's hot, she has some niche/nerdy hobbies that "hot guys" usually don't relate to. So she really does date guys mostly based off personality/common interests, and not looks at all.

The only ones I know of are young adults who have been dating since high school. One grows up and becomes an adult, the other just racks up more birthdays but their mentality is still that of a tenth grader. But nothing over-the-top ever happens to prompt a break up so there they are...a college student still dating their high school sweetheart who bums rides and smokes weed all day.

Not really. Surface-level appearance judgements seem stupid now that I’m older and understand how relationships can grow.

Mismatched personalities can be explained by a toxic codependent partnership (which is a common reason), OR there’s enjoyment of each other behind closed doors that I’m not privy to.

I never look at a couple and presume to know everything that’s going on with them… because I have experience being in a couple and friends not knowing a fraction of how we are with each other behind closed doors.

I do know a couple where the gender roles were completely reversed, the guy is pretty quiet and emotional, and the girl is pretty masculine in personality (also in a quiet kind of way though).

She asked him out and escalated it, and pretty much leads the relationship. They are both very attractive and share a lot of interests though so I guess it makes sense.

I have a friend who is petite, hardworking, fairly pretty, in shape, generally positive and well mentally, and has a future career plan on the go. And she is dating a man who is obese (300+ pounds), no plans for education or career, suffers from chronic depression which affects his willingness to do anything social, complains about work nonstop even tho he hardly works at all, etc. etc.. (I don't actually think he's a bad dude, but he has a lot of shit he needs to work through). My friend gets other guys showing interest in her all the time, but she's head over heals for her man. They've been dating 3 years and she's told me many times how excited she is to hopefully be getting engaged soon.

Definitely, many actually. I’d say the starkest one though was a high school relationship between a friend and his girl. He’s waste product.

He went into the marines but I swear it was because he was a pansi, he was still a pansi after (a big pansi, but I slapped him out one night at a party because he always ran his mouth, as his friend). He was loud and obnoxious….I don’t mind that if someone is actually funny, no one finds him funny. He was big, but chubby in HS, got fit in the Marines, then got super fat as fuck after (like 400 lbs big). He’s a huge right winger who hates people taking handouts but can’t hold down a job (couldn’t before the Marines, was another reason he joined) and spent years getting on disability. He’s now a short order cook at a greasy spoon in IA in his 40’s. Oh, and she pleaded with him for years to have children and he led her on with the someday, and he then laid, never on her a few years back, she almost left him for that apparently, only time she’s come close.

His wife however, went to school while he was in the Marines, became a lawyer, is an absolute boss bitch smoke show. He was the loud leader of that relationship, but she got her voice at some point and is running the show now. All of us have flat out asked her why she’s with him, she literally doesn’t answer other than laughing and saying “I love him”.

I’ve honestly thought about taking a run at her because I know she loved sex back in the day, he’s so fat his dick is engulfed (I’ve seen it in high school, it wasn’t that big to begin with), the only way I can rationalize their relationship is if he’s a cuckold. She seems in love with him, but she’s flirty as hell and he doesn’t have a hint of jealousy.

I saw one relationship, they are content creators and have YouTube channel, where it's a permanently disabled dude in a wheelchair (like birth defects needs a motorized wheelchair and can't hold his own head up), and she is a banging caring lady that is a 9/10.

I think anyone who have been a part of a serious relationship for a prolonged period of time will tell you that you just cannot know. Watching from the outside, you have no idea about the internal dynamics of the relationship, and this, not external stuff, is what really matters in the long term.

I agree with you OP. Some men can bend the rules through manipulation or whatever but the vast majority of relationships are “fair” ie slightly female biased but otherwise equal.

The closest are generally from people that get together very young. so the guy gets the girl when she isn't as open to as many options, or the good looking guy gets together with a girl that gets fat.

Even with that said there are always things you don't know. I remember there was a guy who was like a 4 or 3 dating a 7 in high school and it didn't make sense to me until I found out he was a drug dealer. Similarly one of the top 3 or so girls in the class below me was dating a guy in my class who was a 4 and I also think he was sort of her drug hook up. I know that girl ended up dating a 6'0'' broad framed, pretty faced, athletic guy who was a member of the rich people country club I worked at though.

Usually good women get taken for granted. Have heard so often that “good” girls find great husbands etc. My friends that are loyal and not materialistic have had huge heartbreak. The friends who have cheated and or a savage in dating seem to have better luck dating tbh.
