I went into the thread and did some reading. They do sort of get it. They acknowledge that men experience emotion. That's good.

Of course, their first reaction is the old canard that men are taught to repress their emotion by other men, except for anger which has to manifest as violence. This is just not right.

No, what happens is women, in an attempt to neuter them, raise their sons without any male influence at all. Then they try to teach the boys the methods of emotional expression used by women. They don't understand that how men deal with emotion is different. They probably don't have many men in their own life to have recognized this. Of course, this fails, and the young men learn rage and explode.

I think the most important lesson we can learn is the one Mr. Rogers tried to teach us: our feelings belong to us, we own them, and they are real. However, we can always control our actions. We don't need to act out. We build monuments to the dead that we respect, we write poems and songs and create art for the people we love, anger drives us to action to fix things, and so on.

My mother and aunts firmly believed that my uncle was unable to express how he felt. He didn't talk a lot, but he built his sisters and his adopted children and grandchildren a cabin on a lake and gifted it to them. And me. That's a grander message than anything that can come out of someone's face. That is how men express emotion.

If you want to learn how to express your love, learn how to build a house. Do the hard thing, make the sacrifice, for them.

The problem is that we will do that and then women will act entitled to our work, bitch that we didn't include any women on the construction team or in the cast of characters or whatever, then act like we still can't express ourselves. It's like they refuse to see.

I read the post. The woman was completely oblivious to her own driving.

I was driving along and out of nowhere the SUV in front of me (i.e. wasn't paying attention)
I have no idea what I did (not concentrating)
I was going with the flow of traffic (i.e. not concentrating)

What is likely is that she was on her phone texting someone about something really important, like whether teal shoes should be matched with an aqua cardigan with periwinkle accents for their zumba class that evening, and she drifted across the lane scaring the shit out of him.

Too often I see women texting while driving, not looking at the road ahead of them.

But somehow that's men's fault for getting angry at her? Well, at least he had an emotion. Win.

Such a load of bullshit. I grew up with 4 sisters and two parents that abused me. I cried so much as a child. Even into highschool I cried a lot because my life wasn't great as a teen. You know what I got as a response from my peers?

Both boys and girls looked down on me for having red eyes from crying before school. No one asked questions, no one cared. Because society doesn't care about men suffering.

What caused this suffering? When my dad was on deployment it was angry abuse by my mother Smashing cellphones with a hammer, kicking down doors, being slapped in the face, and none of that even includes the insane mental abuse that a woman can put you through.

I've seen absolute hatred come from my mom's eyes. I've seen it come from my dad's eyes. Not acceptable in either and guess what? Women get a free pass to feel any emotion while clearly as this post states, men do not.

Many of the posts are about people's suspicions and mental gymnastics as to *why* men are "bad at regulating emotions," "angry," "bitter," etc. Several types were used. I saw one person even blame "The Boomers."

The premise is that few have bothered to ask why, and even fewer have had meaningful supposition as to why men might show a range of emotions.

Growing up, as a male, I was told "boys don't cry," that if I had a complaint to "shut up and deal with it," or if I had an injury to "just walk it off." Broken bones, burns, being hit by a car once when I was 8....walk them all off.

When a person grows up being abused and treated as though they don't matter, don't have a voice, aren't wanted, or are ostracized for existing; these are things that nobody asked. Someone even mentioned that "men" don't know how scary they are when they go off. Oh, fuck yeah we do, because every abusive man was an abused boy at one point, and *that* is the point people have entirely missed.

Abused children who are given no help *will* turn into abusers themselves, unless they are extraordinarily strong (and I mean borderline otherworldly in self regulation). Why? Because, they still have no voice because we, as a society (women and men together) have failed to give them a voice.

What can we do? Well as men, we need to speak up more. When someone asks for men to talk about their "feelings" why not accompany it with a horror story as to why that feeling exists? I guarantee a man does not feel angry for no reason, and that we've been socially conditioned into alexithymia. Of course, MGM has been included as another reason for that, and in that case, men are being blamed for being angry at being sexually abused at first, and damaged for life - hardly something I would ever be happy about.

At the very foundation, MGM, women can't understand this. They never will. They're protected, but unironically, the FGM victims who come forward are *very* bitter. I wonder if anyone has tried to call out those women for their bitterness.

Given that society shames men for expressing sadness and/or vulnerability, most men learn to cope with those emotions with anger.

I'm not exactly agreeing as all men are different but I can see where that stigma might come from.

The bigger issue is with my first statement.

I'm always weary when expressing my vulnerabilities with my partner. I've had exes who've chastised or teased me for doing so and even had it used against me later in arguments to attack my masculinity.

So it's no surprise that most men rely on anger to express those vulnerabilities as it's easier to be offensive and guarded rather than exposed.

actually the most emotion i've personally seen IRL is anger by BOTH men & women. not mentioning emotional scenes like funerals & weddings - but in stores or parking lots - i've seen a woman cry for being caught shoplifting - but usually they're pretty angry at being caught. i've seen a man act lonely cause he missed his girlfriend but he wasn't crying (but almost).

Anyone who knows anything about how society is, women are too emotional is a trope to justify denying them a lot of things. Or dismissing them. Whereas men have a history of showing their anger in public, and also acting on that anger.

So the line means that on one side women are being called emotional, while men are not so even though they publicly display anger. I.e. implying that anger is not an emotion.

The reason they didn't need to explain the nuances is that it's being shared with a community that understands what has happened, and has faced these issues in their lives.

I know men who understand these things better now because they've seen it happen in front of them.

Just because you don't understand something and are too lazy to ask, the least you can do is not lie about its meaning.

Even if taken literally, it does not imply that men only know anger. "Whoever says men aren't emotional clearly forgot about anger being an emotion." Forgot about anger being an emotion doesn't mean they're only angry, but that even when it's shown they're not called emotional.
