I don't know about the rest of you but when my apartment is on fire and I need someone to rescue me the one thing I will insist upon is a gender representative rescue team or I just won't climb down that ladder with them!

[–]Blutarg 149 points150 points151 points 9 years ago (34 children) | Copy Link

Oh definitely. If I ever have a heart attack, 12% of the doctors treating me had better be black, or I'm not interested.

[–]gwarsh41 47 points48 points49 points 9 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

Whoa there, I don't know about you, but I want native american representation in my hospital.

[–]Rockefor 21 points22 points23 points 9 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

I'll take the Indian doctor every time, please.

[–]Alarid 12 points13 points14 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I demand a Mexican doctor! At least he'll steal my kidney the right way if it goes wrong.

Uhhh, accepting parity instead of preference? What about 40000 years of slavery you pig? 24% black and 32% native American or this motherfucker burns

[–]7a7p 5 points6 points7 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Did you just assume OP's species?!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (23 children) | Copy Link

This is a little different. I can see black people wanting to be doctors, but can't because of opportunity. But women wanting to become firefighters? Hahahahahahahah

[–]asus3000 16 points17 points18 points 9 years ago (14 children) | Copy Link

What opportunity have blacks not been given, and not given on a silver platter for the last 40 years? Blacks also are given better university seats with lower scores than Asians and whites. These are both Affirmative Action "reward the less competent" awards.

[+][deleted] -11 points-10 points-9 points 9 years ago* (13 children) | Copy Link

You really think black people have the same opportunity in terms of education as white people?

edit: There should be a game in reddit where you get points based on how you get people to expose their racist tendencies, like taking a picture of your catch after fishing. "I got one, honey!"

[–]asus3000 5 points6 points7 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

There should be a game in reddit where you get points based on how you get people to expose their racist tendencies

hint: it's you

[–]Covalency22 14 points15 points16 points 9 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Yes. If not more, because they're black. It's their intelligence and unwillingness that makes them not have the opportunity.

[–]scyth3s 6 points7 points8 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

I have a black friend who finally broke away from his ghetto ass family. He worked his ass off in school despite their lack of support. I saw his family again a while ago. They asked him why he talks white now. You know, he talks like an educated person. Then they complain about white people holding them back.

I have seen more than one case of this, but really just this one up close. White people are seriously not conspiring to hold others back.

[–]Covalency22 6 points7 points8 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

It's such a sham, really, that black culture is the thing that holds down blacks. Same thing with other races. Where as asian culture is way too hard.

White people don't hold anyone back in the present day.

[–]scyth3s 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

White people tend to grow up with more financially stable parents in more financially stable areas. That's it. For the most part it isn't a race issue, it's a question of what neighborhood you were born in and how hard you try to claw out.the opportunities-- scholarships, grants, etc, are all there.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

That's not what you said at our secret underground white privilege meeting last weekend! By the way it's your turn to bring the donuts this time, and don't forget to hand out the $20,000 white privilege checks we get every month.

[–]scyth3s 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Do women stand a chance? Yes, there are about 1% of women who stand a chance (totally made that percentage up off the top of my head).

Women, in general, don't stand a chance, event the amazingly physically fit ones. Sorry, but that's just biology.

[–]neuromancer1987 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Knew several female Army officers who were and are supreme fuck ups. I wouldn't trust them with anything. Let's just let a true meritocracy weed people where they need to go.

[–]Expandedcelt -2 points-1 points0 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Cool I guess? Never said it shouldn't be one, just that blind woman hating is a bit dumb. Makes mra look like a bunch of assholes while making inaccurate and untrue statements. There's a lot of sentiment in this thread that there's no such thing as a woman who is capable of our would want to be a firefighter, so I'm sharing my personal experience that showed both points to be wrong.

[–]bufedad 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Never said it shouldn't be one, just that blind woman hating is a bit dumb.

Pointing out that women, as a group, almost never have enough upper body strength to perform this particular job isn't women hating, it's accepting established science.

[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points0 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You are right. There are plenty of lesbians around who should be given the chance to pass the same tests as male firefighters.

[–]DRU-ZOD1980 5 points6 points7 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I'll let them know when I reach the bottom of the ladder. Best of luck.

[–]moxiebaseball 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

One thing I would rather have is someone physically fit and able performing a rescue. Maybe require a physical ability assessment every year but that leads to political correctness problems.
In general women have better flexibility that is extremely valuable for things like confined space rescues. This doesn't mean anything unless comparing the actual abilities of individuals. It's unacceptable to have unqualified persons doing jobs.

[–]Rasalom72 438 points439 points440 points 9 years ago (99 children) | Copy Link

And of course, even if they get some women who are interested (which most aren't, because firefighting is fucking HARD AND DANGEROUS, both of which are jobs women usually avoid like the plague), good luck getting any who can actually pass the tests.

These types of things need to fucking die. The reason there are not more women doing this is because WOMEN are discriminating against doing these types of jobs. Useless waste of tax dollars.

[–]Mashiki 191 points192 points193 points 9 years ago (30 children) | Copy Link

good luck getting any who can actually pass the tests.

Yep. Though you think this stops them from jamming this garbage through? Nope. The real problem is that a person who can't carry someone, haul hoses, wear the equipment is a danger to everyone else and likely going to get them killed. It's likely going to take an entire team dying before they stop this nonsense though.

[–]ld2gj 91 points92 points93 points 9 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

An entire team or two, several victims, and a lot of property damage.

[–]Mashiki 44 points45 points46 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

They're expendable. Unless it involves animals, then all hell will break loose.

[–]Hobadee 5 points6 points7 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Quick! Somebody set fire to the barn!

[–]baskandpurr 19 points20 points21 points 9 years ago* (5 children) | Copy Link

But those teams are just men, so it doesn't count. If some of the victims are female then the men failed to save them.

Anyway, the solution to this is simple. Tell some of the men who pass the tests to identify as women. You could have the fire service being 50% female without a women ever doing anything dangerous, like fighting a fire.

[–]ld2gj 6 points7 points8 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

I do not think that will ever happen...

[–]Sawses 8 points9 points10 points 9 years ago* (3 children) | Copy Link

I mean, I have Native American on my records and license just in case I need that extra little edge. I'm 1/16 Native American, so it's quite literally the minimum to get any sort of official recognition as a member of a minority race.

I don't identify as any particular minority, and I think it would be a mockery for me to act like it. Anyone asks, I'm white...but I have the blood to make the claim, so I make it.

[–]TheCoyPinch 12 points13 points14 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I'm part woman actually, my mother was a full woman so now I'm 1/2 female.

[–]Glitsh 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I too am 1/16 but was told you can't benefit or claim it unless you have provable ties to a tribe. Was I lied to?

[–]Sawses 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You're right; no funds or tribally-sponsored scholarships. Generic minority scholarships and racial claims? Well, those have no quantifiable basis. How black is black? It's however black you want it to be. I do it more so that employers can tick off a box on their diversity checklist. It makes me more appealing as a potential employee/student/etc.

[–]Squirtclub 39 points40 points41 points 9 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

Sometimes biology ought to dictate what jobs a person can do. It's not sexism, it's common sense.

A 100 pound woman is about as likely to carry my fat ass out of a burning building as I am of carrying a child to term.

[–]akamustacherides 9 points10 points11 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I would pay to see either.

[–]jeegte12 20 points21 points22 points 9 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

i don't even know what sexism or racism are anymore. if i were called a racist or a sexist i wouldn't even feel insulted.

[–]Squirtclub 15 points16 points17 points 9 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

If someone calls you a drug addict, but you don't do drugs, why would you feel anything but confused?

[–]jeegte12 7 points8 points9 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

being a drug addict doesn't necessarily mean you're a bad person. in most people's eyes, that's not true for sexism/racism.

[–]Squirtclub 4 points5 points6 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

True. Just saying that baseless accusations shouldn't evoke too much of an emotional response. Maybe wasn't the best example.

Don't do drugs.

[–]jeegte12 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

drugs are amazing. i just drank a cup of coffee and weed is a wonderful sleep aid.

don't speak in such ridiculous generalizations.

[–]Arizth 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

There's a difference between narcotics, like heroin or cocaine, mild stimulants, like caffeine, and aerosolized burning foul smelling shit, like tobacco or marijuana.

I'll get you help for the first one, we all use the second in some form or another, and for fucks sake stop smoking the third around me.

[–]Squirtclub 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Can't tell if you're serious, but if so you've got to turn down the pedantry a bit. When people say "don't do drugs", they probably don't mean stop drinking coffee and taking Advil.

[–]TracyMorganFreeman 8 points9 points10 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Let's be real. They will be the ones who will be operating the equipment outside, away from danger, and expecting equal pay.

[–]Mashiki 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Not sure about where you live, but EMS/Fire everyone is expected to do the same work. That means to operate the equipment, you have to be able to deadman carry someone(I believe it's a 190lbs dummy) out wearing 80lbs of gear.

[–]TracyMorganFreeman 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Well I've been in the military where the stated position is similar but reality bears out very differently.

[–]Mashiki 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I was going into policing ~7-8 years ago and broke my back during training at the police college. I know what you're saying, but when people simply refuse to work with people who put them in danger, it does make a difference. One of the local FD's near my(large city but under 500k), had this happen. People simply refused to work with her, her jobs were all relegated to inside the station.

[–][deleted] 37 points38 points39 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

An entire team is nothing compared to the feminist goal. It won't even give anyone pause.

[–]NotThatEasily 37 points38 points39 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

They'll come up with some crap about men dying in the field because they aren't as careful as women, or because they didn't trust a woman to save them.

[–]Rethgil 13 points14 points15 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

More likely they'll claim it due to male oppression distracting them from doing their jobs properly.

[–][deleted] 15 points16 points17 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I doubt they'll feel the need to make an excuse at all.

[–]bajamedic 3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

In California they dumb the tests down and it makes it hard for the rest of us who jump through the hoops.

[–]twomillcities 46 points47 points48 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Right? They want to pull the "That's a man's job!" card all the time but then point to biased pay gap statistics.

Want to know the real pay gap? Young men getting paid peanuts to do twice as much work as their female coworkers, and then also having to lift all the heavy shit because "that's a man's job and I just had my nails done"

[–]Ferg8 6 points7 points8 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That's very true.

I worked in a supermarket for 3 years. I'm 6'1", 300 pounds and I was the strongest in there. I was always the one getting heavy stuff, climbing ladders with products or just doing the most physical jobs. Girls in our team (we were 6 men, 2 women) were afraid of heights and weren't able to do the main job (like placing pallets of dairy or cans, etc) because it was too heavy. The two girls were always given the first choice of what they wanted to do in the supermarket. They would always choose paperworks, cleaning isles or help clients. That sucked.

I ended up fucking up my back in this job. Thank god it only was a student's job. I'm now a teacher and I love it.

[–]5th_Law_of_Robotics 50 points51 points52 points 9 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link

Yes. Sadly

[–]bigpurpleharness 42 points43 points44 points 9 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

Medic here, my last agency significantly lowered the requirements for women. Even proving they could lift the cot into the back with 150 lbs on it was optional. Most pts in ems are way more than 150 lbs though...

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points8 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

So what happens when they encounter a situation where they can't perform the action necessary to safely move someone? I always see where they lower the standards, but I never hear about the problems that result in the field because of it.

[–]bigpurpleharness 14 points15 points16 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

We ask for a second unit or the Fire department to assist. If that is unavailable, we just wait.

[–]the_unseen_one 12 points13 points14 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]Sandman_SlimAZ 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Same thing as in the Marine Corps.

[–]icrush 60 points61 points62 points 9 years ago* (3 children) | Copy Link

Its not the same test. Generally, for these kind of professions all physical trials are made easier for women.

Take a look at this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zb_WYGtZ7K4 and yet they ask for equal pay for equal job despite not being able to do these expected tasks for physical jobs such as female private security (which will always call for the male counterpart to stop a fight) or police officer.

[–]glox18 5 points6 points7 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I'm actually going through the hiring process to become a firefighter, which includes taking the CPAT. The female applicants take the test right alongside everyone else, and the tests are scored the same way. The military might make it easier for women because anybody can fire a gun, but when it comes to dragging or carrying a person from a burning building, you either can, or can't. Those that can't won't be hired.

[–]qemist 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That's not how you knock down doors. The test they gave was basically a weight test.

[–][deleted] 18 points19 points20 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

If they're anything like FDNY, they'll give the women extra chances to pass. Heck, they may even give them easier physical fitness parameters.

[–]Techiastronamo 3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

And they might still fail those.

[–]btmims 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

One of them did. Given multiple chances to pass her run test, failed everytime, they still graduated her and put her out on the floor.

[–]Techiastronamo 3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

That is someone's life they're going to fail saving by letting in unqualified people for such a job.

[–]btmims 5 points6 points7 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Oh no, haven't you heard? Feelz > realz, they just need a 2 3 infinite chances to succeed!

[–]dukunt 17 points18 points19 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Why is it so important to push women into jobs they don't want? Why can't jobs simply go to the most qualified? Good luck finding women qualified.

[–]Rethgil 12 points13 points14 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Because what drives and causes such changes nowadays is not science, or good sense, or morality.

It is due to media whining, or protest groups, or politicians. And all of these are very aware and care only about popularity. Which, lately, means....feminism.

Which is why the MRA needs to get more well known and get its voice heard louder than ever before to stand a fighting chance.

Well, yes. When people bitch and moan and complain endlessly, the easiest way to get them to shut up is to give them what they want. You can ignore them, but that only helps for a little while.

Honestly? They value equality of outcome, not opportunity. It's "benevolent authoritarianism" in which it is the job of the government to enforce their vision of an egalitarian utopia.

they tell me that 90%+ of what they do is not fight fires, but more social and domestic related issues.

Outright lie. Why send firemen to do "social and domestic related issues". There's always police and social workers for that.

Are there dispatch, HR, or other field jobs?

They're not firemen are they? Feminists want all the prestige of saving people's lives without doing any of the dangerous, difficult and extremely hard work involved. They want to cushy air conditioned safe "social and domestic" issues type work but still be classified as heroes.

This is the kind of narcissistic self fish, self indulgent world view that says fuck everyone else as long as my name is lights. Fuck actual victims of fires they can die.

[–]ether_reddit 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

In my area, pretty much any 911 call will be answered by the fire department as well as police or ambulance.

That is, if you make a 911 call and request an ambulance, the fire department will also respond because they have trained medics and can often get there faster (as there are neighbourhood fire departments scattered throughout the city, but fewer and more centralized ambulance dispatches). The FD will also often show up to requests for police for e.g. a domestic disturbance.

These days, they're more of an all-round general household distress call answering service than fire fighters.

[–]serribrat 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Why are you so mad? He's not wrong. Many fire departments post call-related data online in annual reports. I reviewed a handful of counties in California, my home state, and found the number of fire-related calls is actually between 2-2.5% of all calls.

Here's a good article from Governing.com to my point titled "Why We Need to Take the 'Fire' Out of 'Fire Department": http://www.governing.com/columns/smart-mgmt/col-fire-departments-rethink-delivery-emergency-medical-services.html

Do you not think your conclusion of feminist wanting cushy air conditioned jobs,l and wanting their name in lights seem a little drastic?

Not OP, but I wouldn't say it's drastic. If you look across the western world, you'll notice that government programs and mandated quotas are for women in business/politics/STEM, not in ditch digging/boiler making/sewage work.

[–]serribrat 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

You are correct that fires represent a small percentage of calls that fire departments respond to. For example, I picked three random counties in California and found similar percentages across the state -- Alameda County (2.5% of calls are fire related); San Bernadino (2%); Los Angeles County (2.1%). The vast majority of incidents are medical.

Sources: https://www.acgov.org/fire/about/statistics.htm http://www.sbcfire.org/about/AnnualReports.aspx http://www.fire.lacounty.gov/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/2015-Stat-Summary.pdf

[–]Dnile1000BC 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

The correct answer to "only few calls are fire related" is not getting more women to be firemen. That is a very feminist thinking in trying to get the glory of being firemen without any of the danger.

The answer should be better call triaging and calling the appropriate service to attend.

There is zero value in having women in the fire department because they are women. Being a woman should not entitle you to a job. In the context of a fire department this could kill people.

[–]Rethgil 5 points6 points7 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Except they will be sending the women who fail the standard physical tests to life or death situations. Unless you have proof showing they would only be sent out to 'domestic related issues' as you called them?

good luck getting any who can actually pass the tests.

If they can pass the tests, at the same level, then fair enough. All power to them, it takes a lot of nerve to go into burning buildings and even more to do so on a regular basis not knowing what dangers lurk within.

However this is not one of those tests where there can be a 'readjusting' off the scores required based upon gender in order to boost numbers and meet some dumb gender balance requirements. This is a job where life and death situations, for both the firefighters and those trapped is a regular occurrence and everyone on that team needs to be able to do their job to the same set high level. If someone were to die because [members of] the emergency response team were not able to perform at the normal standard their would be hell to pay - regardless of gender, age or role.

And, unlike with teachers, having diversity of gender is effing irrelevant. I want whoever is the most capable, man or woman. On average, men will be more qualified, if a woman can meet the standards, she should have the same chance, not an easier one.

[–]whattheyesyes 29 points30 points31 points 9 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

70% of calls are medical. I'm a paramedic about to get a fire job and I can tell you how happy I am when there is a woman on scene to do 12-leads on females, especially females of middle eastern origin as me doing that procedure is a big no no for her and her husband. I know plenty of female firefighters that can beat men is a lot of the tests. Forcing a mandate to hire women is bad and gives women in the fire service a bad name. I do believe more advertising and community out reach for women to apply is good though

[–]Dembara 8 points9 points10 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

[–]WillMeatLover 67 points68 points69 points 9 years ago* (6 children) | Copy Link

This is retarded. A lot of you will say "if women can meet the standards" but that's stupid. Firefighting is an EXTREMELY popular career choice among men. MOST MEN will not cut it because the only guys who get paid firefighting jobs are so far beyond the minimum requirements.

The "standards" are totally irrelevant due to the context of the fact that the real competition is waaaaaaaaay above it and this is a good thing because professional firefighters should be the best available men. Not just "good enough".

It is absolutely idiotic, pure lunacy, to select women over men for firefighting. Thankfully, most women do the discrimination for us.

Source: tried to become a firefighter when I was 18 and had the experience firsthand. I easily beat the minimum requirements and I was nowhere near being good enough to beat the competition for the job. This is in Australia with regards to paid firefighting. There are also far more volunteer (read: unpaid) firefighters. Bush fires can be a big thing here. I'm not overly familiar with how different things will be in other countries, but I am doubtful that it's much different. I.e. firefighting attracts elite and motivated men.

[–]dhawk86 52 points53 points54 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Sure we're taught maneuvers, but it's all about time. We have mazes we have to go through while blindfolded, on air, and in full PPE. The time difference between females and males is astounding. What could take a guy 15 minutes, a certain group of females (slim, small shoulder span, long noodley appendages) can get through it in 5-7. I'm a big guy. My shoulders are stupid broad, and i hold the male record for my department, at just over 10 minutes. All female candidates were able to beat me

Im a very large guy. 2 meters tall and 100 kilos. One day, I fainted inside a building and it was very hard to get a stretcher inside.

Long story short, this MASSIVE guy shows up, and carries me into the ambulance. I remember being drowzy and dizzy and just wondering wtf is going on. what needs to happen, in order to shut this bullshit down, is someone needs to die... of course it can't be a man because then nobody would care... it needs to be a woman or child! and they need to die specifically because a woman firefighter couldn't perform the same job as a man but was made a firefighter anyway, despite failing to pass the same physical requirements. Only then will people start to speak up and denounce this bullshit! I'm certainly not hoping this actually happens, but it's the only way I foresee people opening their eyes to reality!

[–]Bandymidget 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Death is honestly the only thing that will ever change standards in the fire service. We try to be proactive, with support from chiefs, all the way to fresh candidates; no luck. Too much red tape to justify the costs and retraining to prevent something that might never happen.

But once a firefighter dies, it's like everything gets kicked into overdrive. There's petitions, lobbying, social media campaigns, media coverage, the whole 9 yards.

People say "if only we'd known before what we know now, this could've been avoided"

Well we did. We know it was dangerous. Politics has no place in the fire service, just as beurocrats have no place in the military. Leave the important decisions to the professionals, who know their industry. You wouldn't get an IT professional to fix a car, so why get community board members to delegate to firefighters how to do their job safely?

If fire departments are forced to prefer female applicants, then they also are forced to prefer more destroyed buildings and more loss of life. Dead people, shattered homes, businesses, and churches are small price to pay to make sure an illusion is maintained. Sounds like equality to me.

Wait until life insurance companies have to start paying out death benefits more often in areas where the firefighter makeup skews more toward women, both because more firefighters die in the line of duty and more casualties happen during fires. I'm not saying women can't do the job, but when it comes to carrying a 250lb unconscious person out of a building, a fit, well trained man is going to be able to do that better than a fit, well trained woman. As soon as Insurance companies start having to pay out more, there will be major lobbying against this.

thought I'd chime in. Most of my adult life I was an artillery NCO in the army. Part of the standards is being able to carry 3 separate rounds from the ammo vehicle to the gun, lock, load and fire. (depending on the type of round they can weigh up to 75lbs or so). Lot of men and most woman can't do this. I'd go so far as to say that any woman that can is probably a pro athlete of one type of another. I had 1 too many conversations asking/demanding to know why woman can't be artillery and just do other stuff. (driving the vehicles, aiming the gun, pulling the chord and firing the gun) There was no explaining to them, yes-we all do different things during a fire mission but the people have to be interchangeable. That's the job, including carrying, loading and locking 3 rounds in about 30 seconds. (was in AIT about 25 years ago, honestly don't remember the exact standard) That's the job. It's 13B, there is no 13.5 Bravo where you do everything but load the rounds. I can't say there are no woman who can do this, but i can say I've never met one. I've met a lot of woman who just wanted to make the job less exclusive-actually had one thought the army should make 75lb rounds weigh less than 75lbs. I realize firefighters do other things beside break down doors and carry people. But that is part of being a firefighter and if it's a standard every male FF has to achieve I don't think a woman should be held to a lower standard.

I'm a firefighter and this really pisses me off, not because of the sexual preference, but because they are potentially sacrificing quality to fit a narrative for "equality". I don't give a damn if someone has a dick or not, when shit hits the fan I want someone I can rely on to help me or get me out if I'm compromised. That's my priority as a firefighter.

[–]BorealBro 6 points7 points8 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

A dept. in my town was taking this same approach. They held the fitness tests, and surprise surprise, no women passed. Instead of hiring men that did pass, they invited only the women back to redo the tests with lighter sled drag weights. Then placed both of them number 1 and 2 in the hiring pools.

Men and women are not equal physically or emotionally, there is a reason that there is unequal representation in many jobs, it happened naturally, they should leave it alone.

The majority of women are not physically strong enough to carry the dead weight of a man. Decisions like these put lives at risk.

[–]ChaosOpen 4 points5 points6 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Want to bet this won't fix the disparity? Why? Because women don't want to be firefighters.

As a teacher, men don't need to speak up versus be silent. Play a sport? Look like you can coach? Bam! You will always get a job before a women. It fills the need for coaches and men in teaching. I had 3 men in my college graduating class. All of them sucked at grammar and did far below the rest of us. All of them were hired first. So, not a good comparison. As a firefighter's wife, you sure better be able to haul my husband or someone else out of a burning building. Pass the fitness requirements and by all means, get placed on the proper place on the hiring list. The proper place meaning where you stand after testing, interview, and qualifications.

[–]Rethgil 3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Yet they don't have the same physical tests in such vital life or death work, such as the military.... Feminism literally costing lives.

[–]Lethn 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It really is, this is when quotas get genuinely dangerous, if you hire women you make them take the exact same tests as men.

[–]Tech-Teacher 3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Actually male elementary teacher applicants are few and far between. From my experience male elementary teachers get hired quicker because they are sought after as a role model and provide support in areas that have been more comfortably in the male domain... I'm not saying it's right, but I have know multiple male elementary teachers get offered multiple jobs at once while female teachers must compete with 90% of the other teachers.

[–]TheForeverKing 4 points5 points6 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Ridiculous. These are jobs that literally save lives. Just give them to the most qualified people, man or woman.

I'm a firefighter, and I work for a department that hasn't done this type hiring discrimination yet. I work right next to a city that has, though.

It's true though, women don't want to be firefighters. Very few show up to hiring exams and even fewer attend fire academies on their own.

It's so much bull shit.

I've even told a boss off when he told me he gave me special treatment because I was female. [–]wpgsae 3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Here's an analogy. Two people apply for one spot in med school and each meet the minimum GPA requirement of 3.7. One applicant has a 3.7 on the dot, the other has a 4.5 (A+ average). It is also clear that the 4.5 student will be a much better doctor in the end. However the 3.7 student fits in the priority demographic and therefore gets the spot. Does this make sense to you?

[–]ld2gj -2 points-1 points0 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Not really. The 4.5 GPA student may not be the better doctor. Doctors have several criteria that need to be met besides knowledge.

[–]majortom22 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

That's a quibble and you're not addressing the meat of the rhetorical question. The point is assuming candidate A is overall better than candidate B, should you choose B for politically motivated reasons when lives will be on the line?

Firefighters dont require bed side manners. Bravery sure but that will surely be vetted in the training much as it for seals or cops or whatever.

You pulled a Politician and just fundamentally dodged the question ;)

[–]ld2gj -2 points-1 points0 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

No, something better would be the example would be:

Two people apply for a financial job. Person A has 2 years experience and an Associates degree. Person B has a only a 4 year degree and no experience.

While both show the drive to know the job through education; only one has the experience/capability to do the job.

[–]wpgsae 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

One of the assumptions is that the 4.5 will be a better, more capable doctor. The analogy is supposed to compare to a woman who barely meets the requirements being chosen over a man who exceeds the requirements.

they never do say how diversity is supposed to magically help, do they? it's just assumed that it's a good, regardless of the circumstance

[–]contractor808 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Diversity is code for less men, less whites, or both depending on the circumstance (PC folk even do it to themselves, see "intersectionalism"). In their world view, any place where men or whites are disproportionately represented (in this case firefighting) it must be a result of discrimination. Therefore, pushing more "minorities" like women into such places is righting a wrong and must inevitably be tackled by government mandate.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I know plenty of people who can handle it! This is a hard job and only the best of the best should be hired. I don't care their race, gender. I want the best! Making cotas will not make the best work there!

Thanks to you guys, I stopped being a lurker and made an account just to respond to this. I have many friends in the fire service, both male and female. I'm currently trying to get hired. Your comments here really annoyed me, because of one of my friends in particular. I've known her for years, and she has dedicated her life to being a firefighter. She's no more than 5'5", maybe 130 pounds. I'm 6'1 and 210. I have been on the receiving end of this woman hauling me out of a building, and let me tell you it was not comfortable. I was removed faster than I ever have been. Her strength is NOT in question in my mind. In fact, I'd rather have her come for me than some of the others I know. You guys need to understand that things are changing; get out of the past. If the fire service diversifies, we can grow as an industry. Stop thinking everything is an attack on you. It's not. Grow up.

[–]GrandPoobah_ 12 points13 points14 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

past, present and future men are stronger than women. having a hiring bias towards a gender is sexist and silly in this case because its a physical job in which men out perform women.

[–]IAmDabaw -3 points-2 points-1 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I'm not saying weaken. She makes the cut. No tests were changed for her, no passes were given. As for the not comfortable.... Of course she dragged me. That's how you get someone out of a burning building. You don't carry them. Carrying them makes them higher off the ground, into an environment that is filled with smoke, and potentially superheated. So you drag them. And you practice like you fight, thus why I was dragged. Hope that clears that portion up for you.

[–]mastermikeyboy 9 points10 points11 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Fantastic! (no I'm not being sarcastic)

I personally don't have an issue with qualified woman in any industry if they honestly made the cut, without lowered standards to meet political numbers. But when they say they're getting preferential treatment... Isn't that exactly what women were fighting against? The only difference is that now it goes the other way. It's still sexist.

The feminists that agree with this now show their real colors. Those don't want equal rights. They want more rights / revenge.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points8 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

If the fire service diversifies, we can grow as an industry.

Did your friend meet the required standards, passed the tests? If so, good. She fulfilled her end and is willing to pull her weight.

But you know what? She's only ONE compared to the many women who don't meet these standards, pass tests tailored to them, and are spoiled rotten in order to make the department look good instead of able to do their job without risking the lives of victims and their team.

Diversity doesn't mean jack in this instance.

[–]cymrich 4 points5 points6 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

it sounds like your friend may be in the top 5% or so of women who really can compete with men in physical strength... and if so then its great she is a firefighter. were her tests made easier because she was a woman? did she fail physical tests and get a pass anyway because she is a woman? if no, then she is not the type of woman the comments here are referring to. if yes, then she obviously is NOT in that top 5% or so and you are simply biased due to your relationship with her.

[–]majortom22 3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That was laughable.

Even if you were truthful, you will still be pulled out faster still by another 6'1" well built man.

No one is saying a woman can't do it but when shit hits the fan you need the BEST not just "adequate"

Waiting to hear you try and argue your 5'5" friend is going to haul you around faster than me -I'm 6'2" and just under 200 pounds (and not good enough to be picked as a fireman by the way. I could probably "do it" but there are others way better than me and in a game of inches that may make the difference)

Try again.

On the one hand, people are totally right on the point they are making when it comes to jobs in education, where no reforms are being made to promote male hiring. On the other hand, we should try and keep the discussion a bit more civil and logical in this thread. Sure, women will -on average- not be suited for a firefighting position. That doesn't mean that there aren't women who are perfectly capable of physically and mentally handling the job. I am willing to bet that out of 200 humans there are way more than 4 women able to be firefighters (simply put it's like saying only 4 in 200 women can physically be on par with males, which is absurd). The bar isn't being lowered to get random women into firefighting. What is happening here, will just be an incentive for a really small amount of women that are in a position to do the job and might had not been chosen due to their gender. Not more women are going to apply to become a firefighter, it is just a way of promoting the few that are able and willing to do so. People are gonna jump on me saying that "Sure, not more women will apply and all, but when they are choosing between a man and a woman that are equally skilled and qualified, they will DISCRIMINATE against the man and choose the woman". To which I can only say... Yeah, this is literally how it's supposed to work, lol. If the 2 are actually equally suited for the job then SOME decision HAS to be made and tipping the scales ever so slightly for 1% of women actually capable of doing the job, doesn't sound awfully bad to me. After all, isn't this what we want to happen in the sector of education for men anyways? At least that's what the title suggests.

We must remember that this is not a fight for who gets the most rights. We, as men, should not get pissed, because a reform is favorable to women in certain work fields, and to be honest in this case, rightfully so. It is still perfectly reasonable to argue for the same reforms in similarly misrepresented fields for us, but the picture people are painting in this thread makes it seem like anything positive going on for women is downright outrageous if men don't get the exact equivalent at the same moment. This is r/mensrights not r/bashwomensrights and I don't see how this reform affects men's rights in any way, other than giving us a reason to point out that the same principle should be applied to the education sector.

[–]RubyOrchid13 5 points6 points7 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

You're a dumbass. Nice concern troll btw. This comes down to loss of human life, it isn't just a reform we should support because, the womynz. This has been tried already in many places, and what happens is, the spots for women, never get filled. The fact of the matter is equality. It isn't equal to lower every standard, just so one demographic can get the job, and then pay them the same. If you are going to pass easier tests, you don't DESERVE to be paid the same as those who did pass the harder tests. Anyways, it is going to kill people. That's the issue here. Women just aren't as strong, and the job relies almost entirely upon physical strength, to do it correctly. This is apparent by the videos being posted here. The number one woman's arm wrestler in the world, was beaten by Joe Schmoe off the street, who didn't even work out, and was honestly pretty out of shape. Or the other video of the fire-women who couldn't even knock down the front door to get in a home during a firefighting competition. Let that sink in, she couldn't even break down the door, to begin doing her job. If it was you and your family on the other side, I really doubt you would prefer her be the one coming to save you. This is playing indexed politics with people's lives, and is sick. People will die, so some fuck head of an sjw can have a warm and fuzzy feeling. Stupid...

[–]smthsmthfreeesem -3 points-2 points-1 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

1) They never lowered the standard, where did you get that from? There are NO "easier" and "harder" tests, I don't know where you see these things, both genders have to meet the same requirements to get hired. There is ONE test and if women can pass it, that should be enough. If they pass the same test, why can't they be hired? It's the ONE requirement they have to meet. It's the STATES'S job to make that test as hard as necessary. 2) I'd love to see a link for that Joe Schmoe thing, a google search didn't get me anything. 3) I agree that women are relatively weaker and NEVER disputed that. But that is only re-la-ti-ve. Some women are strong enough to be a firefighter. There aren't a lot. SOME are though. Nowhere does it say that they will bring in quotas to hire women or anything. That is because so few women actually apply. It's just a way of making sure that the few % of women actually qualified to do the job, aren't stopped by idiots like you, who think that every woman in the world is inherently weaker in every aspect. Bravo man. By the way, I love how I simply asked to keep things civil and you're first sentence is "you're a dumbass".

We, as men, should not get pissed, because a reform is favorable to women in certain work fields, and to be honest in this case, rightfully so.

I disagree. For two reasons.

First, it lends credence to the sexist assumptions feminism claims to fight: "Women can't hack it in a male-dominated workplace. This is a job for MEN!". You start lowering standards, accommodating every woman in the name of diversity and Virtue-Signalling PR, these actions make them out to be incapable of standing on their own two feet. Fulfilling sexist assumptions, proving the disbelievers right. Passing on to future generations of women that all they need to do is whine, complain, and throw the word "Misogynistic" at every male-dominated job and they'll get a free cookie.

2) Work environment morale. You think every man is going to automatically respect a woman working alongside them that has managed to get the job without going through the necessary hoops and training HE had too? Hell no! If that woman were to start demanding respect from me, I'd refuse. You take the easy way out, respect won't come easy. Period. That's a fact of life.

I haven't mentioned how much men will have to start policing themselves around her constantly. Because if her job placement came from screaming "Misogynist" and advocating in kind, no one is going to want to speak to her or work with her out of fear their actions will be misconstrued by said woman. All it takes are the words "Sexual Harassment" and they might as well start looking for a new job because very rarely will their side of the story sit with Relations.

That's why I disagree. Now, you tell me where it is in those paragraphs have I engaged in bashing Women's Rights.

[–]smthsmthfreeesem 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

1) No, it does not lend credence, it's the exact opposite. Quotas do what you are saying. These aren't quotas.

You start lowering standards, accommodating every woman in the name of diversity and Virtue-Signalling PR, these actions make them out to be incapable of standing on their own two feet. Fulfilling sexist assumptions, proving the disbelievers right.

This reform does NOT lower standards. I don't understand how everyone replying to me seems skip this part. Everything with regards to standards stays the same.

Passing on to future generations of women that all they need to do is whine, complain, and throw the word "Misogynistic" at every male-dominated job and they'll get a free cookie.

No, it passes down the assumption that if you succeed in the test you have to pass, nobody will deny you the position because of your gender.

2) Regarding morale, how is that even a legit argument? You don't have popular to work somewhere, you have to be qualified. I don't think every man will respect women working with them, but that's a) blatantly misogynistic and b) totally irrelevant to the debate of whether some women make good firefighters. IF they get the job then they WILL have passed ALL the "necessary hoops and training" men had to.

Let's get this straight. The test is the same for both. The admission grade or whatever is still the same for both. Only in case of a 50-50 will they choose a woman over a man, considering they are more or less equally qualified. If you want to argue about the admission test not being enough/not preparing you for the actual dangers of the job etc, it is a valid discussion point. However, it is a totally irrelevant discussion point. I hope you understand that we both don't really disagree with each other, Ι'm not arguing that men are much stronger than women, it's just that you base your final opinion on partly wrong assumptions.

[–]smthsmthfreeesem 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Do you need someone to TELL you not to get pissed, because gender discrimination is being eradicated? It is a two way push. Women push on their side, we as men, push on ours. We both push towards the same direction though. If they succeed in their fights it should be ok with you, anything else implies that you have problems with someone just based on their gender. I don't believe you disagree with the fact that discrimination exists in the working environment towards both genders. You certainly seem to agree that it exists towards men, since you're on this sub and thread. If you don't think that at least the same amount of discrimination is directed towards women, you should revise your news sources and -if you're not willing to make some google searches- just try and visit some more subreddits. I'm on this sub every day because I value the posts (what I don't like, is the direction the comments take though... just sad :( )

And discriminating against men isn't ending gender discrimination. It's not the job of the government to enforce quotas in public (or private) sector jobs. No matter if it's teaching, fire fighting, or paper pushing. Interest and ability are suitable measures for employment, not demographics.

There's no such thing as equally capable candidates by the fact that people, and their abilities, are not identical. So to think that it wouldn't make a difference between picking a man or a woman is both contradicting the premise of choosing a woman over a man for "diversity" and based on a false premise that humans can be judged as fully equal.

What they said was that if they pass the test they get hired when many man that pass the best don't. You know why? Because there are other man or woman even better than the minimum requirement. These requirements work like a first filter to pick the best for the job but they want to make it the minimum women's have to hot to be automatically hired and that is stupid

to be fair, do firefighters actually carry people out of buildings these days? I feel like they just stand around spray shit down. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Umm, who do you think has to rescue everyone from a building that is on fire or about to collapse then? Police? Paramedics? Neighbors? Their cat? I don't know was this supposed to be /s but yes, they do.
