The Urban Dictionary has quite a different interpretation.
A REAL Lady, Not your only but your favourite, different from them hood rat chicks. Sexy in everyway possible, when she smiles it's sexy, even when she's mad at you it's sexy. "I'm gon make her my wifey, she's not like them chicken heads round da way, she's a diamond in the rough"

Of course I am, but it perfectly explains slang, thing which normal dictionaries often don't, and in general it shows how a word could be used in the real world, you just have to discriminate what is satire or biased from what isn't. With a grain of brain and cross-reference work, urban dictionary is a fantastic tool to improve one's English skill. I'm totally serious
[–]Deceptichum 94 points95 points96 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Even for native English speakers it's fantastic. There's so much regional variation with regards to slang that it makes talking online easier.

Personally, I'm Italian and I've never really received a formal education for English. I learnt it through music, gaming, internet, movies and books. All the italian people I know who studied English, even university level, speak it worse than me. School is never enough
[–]SourV 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
English classes usually suck but they do teach you grammar. I learned a ton of stuff that I have never actually used but it's very helpful when you are reading or writing. I only got to intermediate level and after that I started watching movies and listening to music in English like you did. My pronunciation improved a lot to the point that when I moved to the US I had little to no accent.
[–]Rabid_Pink_Princess 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Yes, grammar is a problem. Now, I'm a grammar nazi about Italian, it's something I like, so I'm curious about English grammar, I search stuff I'm confused about an I usually get it fast, but there's a lot of things I don't know how to properly use.
[–]SourV 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
You should give duo lingo a try, you can even do tests so that you don't start from the basics. Right now I'm learning French and duo lingo has helped me out a lot with grammar.
I hope I get to learn Italian one day, I already speak Spanish so I don't think it's going to be much of a problem :)

Nah, don't worry dude. I'm with you on this one. We're both gonna get shit on by this community for refusing to join in the victimhood.
Edit: As predicted, the community has come forth to explain how it's entirely okay to whine about shit like this:
feminists can make an issue out of "manspreading" and, far from being told they're doing a disservice to their gender or movement, manage to get laws past banning it
Go ahead, justify "but they did it too, waaaaaaahhh, my fee-fees are hurt."
[–]adamdavid85 22 points23 points24 points 9 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link
You know, we can point out the disparity without claiming to be victims...
[+]belisaurius -13 points-12 points-11 points 9 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link
Except the only reason that this disparity matters is if you elevate it to enough of an 'injustice' that there's room to be a victim. It's so unbelievably petty that I find it hard to believe anyone could seriously consider it worth discussing unless it reinforced their views.
[–]adamdavid85 9 points10 points11 points 9 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link
It doesn't really matter. Half the comments are joking about it and the other half are telling people to stop taking this seriously and that it's a stupid non issue. What I'm not seeing is people taking it seriously and crying injustice, so maybe you're in the camp that needs to chill out a bit ;)
We can't always be in super serious injustice mode here, ya know. It gets tiring without some lighter stuff to joke about.
[+]belisaurius -11 points-10 points-9 points 9 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link
So you get to have it both ways? When it's not 'serious' enough you can claim it's a 'joke' and when it is serious, you can cry injustice? Why should anyone believe that you're serious if your whole MO is just 'whatever works best for us in the moment'?
[–]adamdavid85 6 points7 points8 points 9 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
That's not what I said at all. Some posts are about serious issues and some are minor things or double standards that we poke fun at. I really don't understand why you're so bent on making this some sort of poor reflection on the sub.

No. I'm suggesting that the entire premise of your subreddit is flawed and this massively upvoted post only underlines that.
News flash, 95% of the crowd that comes in from /r/all won't take us seriously anyway.
Ask yourself why.
[–]adamdavid85 8 points9 points10 points 9 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
Ah yes, thanks for that argumentum ad populum, that totally proves your point.
Given your attitude I expect you're just going to dismiss any real issues on this sub out of hand, because you've already decided we're wrong and don't need to know anything more. We might enjoy the lighter fare now and then but if you bother to read the FAQ and sidebar, you might understand why this sub exists.
For the record, speaking about gender issues is not a zero-sum game. Society at large can discuss men's issues without taking away from women's issues and vice-versa.

[–]belisaurius 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
First, they're not equivalent words. Second, the male one isn't derogatory. Given both of your false presumptions, it isn't a double standard. Come back with real gender inequality. This MSJW shit isn't worth my time.
[–]Ricwulf 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link
Wifey isn't derogatory either. As for being equivalent, how is wifey and hubby not a cute phrase for wife and husband?
And nobody is saying that that this is some massive gender inequality, simply that it's a double standard. You're relying on an appeal to relative privation, that because there is worse cases out there, that this is somehow not a double standard.

[–]TheBeginningEnd 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

[–]phylop 4 points5 points6 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]My_Tuesday_Account 3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link
Thats......not true at all.
There definitely is a distinction between slang and officially recognized English words.
[–]PoppyOP 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Bubble wasn't a word before Shakespeare invented it and now it's a word in the dictionary. Languages evolve, that's why we don't understand Shakespeare as well as we understand modern day English.
Edit: words like lol are in the print version of the issues dictionary as well.
[–]My_Tuesday_Account 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I understand that language is constantly evolving that is not at all what is being argued here. You are literally saying that any combination of sounds I can make with my mouth is an official and recognized word and that is not true. I'm not saying it's not a word at all but there's a reason we have terms like slang or jargon or other words that describe terms that aren't really recognized as official English words but that do have some sort of definition because they aren't just gibberish.
[–]TotalWalrus -1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Nope. Other languages have actual people that dictate what is a word and what isn't. English does not. If you say a group of sounds together and have a intended meaning, its a word.
[–]My_Tuesday_Account 3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Just because there's not a government body that decides what words are official or not does not mean that there is not a distinction between common words and things like jargon or slang that are not necessarily recognized as words.
This whole theory that any combination of sounds is a word is pants on head retarded. There's a reason we have the term "gibberish".
[–]bufedad 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
There is no official words in English. There are just commonly agreed upon meanings and words.
If it becomes widely used, it's a word. It doesn't matter what the dictionary says or any other body. As opposed to languages with official words, you cannot invent new words. It's not official.
[–]the_timps -1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
But there is no "official" for English.
Dictionaries can often differ. Websters makes new announcements when they add words, and some other dictionaries dont include them at all.
EG here's an old update from Oxford: http://blog.oxforddictionaries.com/press-releases/new-words-added-oxforddictionaries-com-august-2014/
[–]My_Tuesday_Account 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I guess I should have been more clear that when I say official I mean words that are widely recognized, found in a printed dictionary, can be used in Scrabble, etc. Not necessarily in the literal sense.
I guess I should have been more clear that when I say official I mean words that are widely recognized,
I get what you are trying to say, but even then that differs by region. There are words that would be widely recognized in the South and aren't recognized at all in Seattle, and vice versa.
found in a printed dictionary,
Different words are recognized in different dictionaries, and aren't recognized in others. For instance aint and lol. These are included in some dictionaries, but not others.
Not necessarily in the literal sense.
In no sense is there a central understanding of what words are "real" English words and what words aren't.

Well, if you have a meaning for it, and use it repeatedly, absolutely it's a word.
If enough people adopt this word, it'll even end up in some dictionaries, and maybe eventually in all dictionaries. That is how all words started.

Anyone who has ever taken any English class.
[–]belisaurius 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link
You'd think that anyone who took and completed an English class would be intelligent enough to not have their mind "polluted" by reading a single descriptive word in a dictionary somewhere.
[–]bufedad -1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link
You do realize how idiotic the average person is? And then you have to realize that half of the population is even less intelligent than that.
[–]belisaurius 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link
I also think that, regardless of bell curves, everyone is capable of being a critical thinker. It shouldn't take a massive amount of innate intelligence to determine that a single dictionary phrase can't "pollute" you.
[–]bufedad -1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link
I also think that, regardless of bell curves, everyone is capable of being a critical thinker.
If everyone was capable of being a critical thinker, there wouldn't be much of a bell curve when it comes to intelligence.
[–]belisaurius 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
That's not true at all. Very clearly, the overwhelming majority of people both learn and make critical decisions about their daily lives. I do not think it is beyond anyone to apply basic critical reasoning skills. You're making a hugely dismissive generalization of half of the country, essentially comparing them to uneducated children.

You're making a hugely dismissive generalization of half of the country, essentially comparing them to uneducated children.
That's how averages work. Half of the population will be below average, and half will be above average. That's literally what average means.
That's not true at all. Very clearly, the overwhelming majority of people both learn and make critical decisions about their daily lives.
I don't think that's very clear at all actually.
[–]Pandamonius84 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
Was taught English, never used a dictionary. So they're goes that idea.
But in all serious I didn't use one unless I needed to spell a long word or the teacher wanted to punish the class.
[–]eolson3 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
Ever? Never looked up a word?
[–]Pandamonius84 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
If it was reguard the 1st sentence I was being ironic since I use the adjective they're instead of there.
Hence why I said "in all seriousness" in the second sentence to illustrate what I've had used a dictionary for.
[–]eolson3 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
That still makes no sense. You never looked up a word to see what it actually means, not just how to spell it? You have no interest in the meaning, or you have some innate knowledge of the entirety of the English language?
[–]Pandamonius84 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link
Well if I'm looking up a word to know how to spell it correctly I'll know what it means as well. I thought that's implied when you look something up.
And I already mentioned that my 4th grade teacher would force our class to read the dictionary if we got to rowdy. So besides reading the most boring book man has ever created, I've learned that there a words that won't get used outside of extreme circumstances.
I really don't get what your trying to get at.
[–]Mustard_Icecream 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

According to my quick Google search, "fallacy of definitions" is not about definitions being bad, but ways definitions can be bad/useless
[–]g_squidman 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Well it's a fallacy. Saying, "your argument is false because you used a word incorrectly" isn't actually disproving their argument. Just because they misused a word, it doesn't mean that the idea they meant to communicate is wrong.
So when someone says, "you're wrong. Feminism is a good thing, because feminism is equality for everyone and cares about men's inequalities too," it's this fallacy. Some people's feminism is for everyone, and some people's feminism isn't.
[–]LoicyT 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Ironically I can't find that defined anywhere. Does it go by a more popular name?
I agree this is a thing but we might have to popularize and explain it for it to hold water.
Something like "points to a definition as if one source is the end-all on what a word can mean"
Round here "feminism means equality, see dictionary X" is most well known example.
[–]g_squidman 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
That is ironic XD. Actually, I think it may have a more popular name, but I can't remember it right now.
Yeah, it's basically what you described. Good example too. It's a fallacy, because having different ways of defining a word is a pointless argument. The idea behind the word is what the argument should be about. Otherwise, you're just having a miscommunication, not an argument.
The "feminism means equality for all" versus "feminism is just for women" argument is exactly that. If a person's personal, unique feminism is just for women, then they're wrong. If their personal feminism is for everybody, then they're right. We can't debate over what "feminism" means, because people will think about it differently.

This has little to do with double standards though, this is simply a matter of language development, and how certain words are used. in the 50's wifey was a term coined and/or used for exactly what's described in op's picture. hubby has been and is currently still used as a term of endearment. i think claiming this to be double standards is quite factually wrong.

I think the important thing for a movement to consider is it's message. Think how popular this post is. It's unimportant sillyness that detracts from meaningful discourse.
It's also potentially dangerous when everything is considered, bringing out the true misogynists out of the woodwork.
[+][deleted] 9 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link
[–]Scuba_jim 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Words have impact. I'll try my best not to sound like an SJW because they've high jacked a lot of the phrases here. Normalising something like misogyny is very dangerous, because even if you personally don't act on it, someone else might. If you have a culture of misogyny, women will get hurt and killed. Period. There's nothing special about misogyny either; practically any idea will have a knock on effect.
I didn't say that this post supports misogyny, I'm saying the way it is delivered muddies the water for the message of men's rights. Take BLM for instance. To say there is not some sort of racial injustices happening is wanton ignorance. However, because you have extremists who are violent BLM's overall message becomes ignored. This was allowed to happen because BLMs message was muddied by exploring every avenue of rights, which tread on violent means. There are heaps of other examples. How are people on t_d evaluated? How do you perceive social justice now a small subset of SJWs are making ludicrous and stupid demands?
By having these fairly silly posts that are very popular (but probably explainable- like a google algorithm) it shows that the Men's Rights message is getting all over the place. This means that misogyny will be entertained and this will weaken Men's Rights overall.
In regards to the post itself, I don't think this is gynocentrism or anything but a particular quirk of Google. There are bigger fish to fry.

They say dick and cock are vulgar slang, but they don't say bitch is vulgar slang. Only informal!
In English, there isn't really an equivalent for "bitch" when it comes to referring to men too. Cock and dick are the best I can find, tell me if you have another. They refer to genitalia and are more like "cunt," not like "bitch" which often refers to gender or lack of masculinity. Surely this is a fundamental reflection of all humanity, the fact that a gendered insult for men quite like bitch doesn't exist! Right?

No, women want their body to look smooth while wearing pants. If women would really buy pants with pockets, all any gender studies student would have to do is create a company that sells them to make a fortune.

"Nah we totally don't control what shows up on our search results and what doesn't. For real." - Google
[–]My_Tuesday_Account 8 points9 points10 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
.... do you have even a remote understanding of how Google results work?
Literally all it is doing is parsing the definition from THE FIRST LINK ON THE PAGE which happens to be THE OXFORD DICTIONARY, which is a more than reputable source for word definitions. That's how it works every time. It looks through your search terms and if it can be easily answered by the first link, such as when you're asking for a definition or somebody's age, it simply scrapes that information and puts it at the top of the results so you don't have to even click. You're more than welcome to ignore that result and choose your own result. They aren't hiding anything, they aren't forcing anything on you, they're literally just trying to make searching more convenient.
Google does a lot of questionable things, this is not one of them.
Jesus christ not every single thing in life is some grand conspiracy.
[–]bufedad 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
Think of the google search engine like a car.
It does this one thing. You put your search terms in, and it puts it through the process.
When you turn the wheel of your car, the car does this one thing. It does it the same way every time.
What Google is saying is that, they don't control whether turning your steering wheel left turns the wheels left or right based on what street you are on. It always just turns the wheels left or right.
Google doesn't control what shows up in your search results anymore than Ford controls whether your car turns left or right on Broad street.
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
Cute analogy but it all falls apart when you find out that Google actually does curate what you see for search results.
[–]bufedad 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
No, they don't. They setup the algorithm and let it loose. They update their algorithm, but they do that for speed, accuracy, and efficiency.
With billions of search combinations across each language (and multiply that by all available search languages), they cannot curate your search results. They just cannot. It's not possible for a human to do that.
You're wrong.
https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2017/jun/23/google-begins-removing-private-medical-records-from-search-results
Bing exists today because of the porn purge Google did some years ago.
Google curating their search results is not new information at all, but I suppose it might be if you're searching for evidence on Google.
[–]bufedad 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Um... again, you seem to have a critical misunderstanding of what's happening at Google.
No one is going through and removing all medical information that's being added to the internet from the search engine information. That would be impossible.
They are updating their algorithm to filter that out.
Seriously, a little education on how applications work wouldn't be amiss here.

The comments trying to rationalize this by saying "different words have different definitions" are completely ignoring the obvious double standard displayed here.
No, this is not the most important issue going on right now involving men's rights, but that doesn't mean we can't simply take this example in, digest it, and move on having a little more knowledge involving examples of double standards that are subtly harming and degrading men's role in society.

The n-word comes from 'negro', the word that in most romance languages simply means 'black'. We even still use the word 'black' to describe various ethnicities today
'Cracker' seems more offensive in itself: Implying all whites crack whips/own slaves.
"Similar origin" refers to the fact they were used in approximately the same place and era, denoting people of a different racial group than oneself
[–]testmypatience 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Yup. Except white people don't give a crap about being called cracker because it's of hollow and false application.
I find the n word to be pointlessly connotated much like the ridiculous connotation difference between feces, crap, and shit. Literally just a classist language scenario.
Humanity needs to mature faster because these stupid language problems are annoying.

They are gendered versions of the same word though.
[–]Bisexual-Bop-It 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Not really. Hubby has been used long enough that its what my grandparents use to refer to each other. Wifey is a newer term that I've only started hearing recently. In my opinion, hubby is just a shortened word for husband when wifey has different connotations as to what your wife/future wife means to you. I see the term wifey used more in the "that girl would make good wifey material" context rather than "hey this is sharon,my wifey". Basically. If my bf called me wifey id feel really weird about it cause it somehow suggests something off in the same way that calling me "baby" or "babe" would.
[–]Saerain 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Suggests something off?
[–]Bisexual-Bop-It 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
It would make me feel uncomfortable because it has less of a lovey dovey vibe and more of a "this is my main bae for life" vibe. Again, kinda similar to being called baby, babe, or bae. It's definitely less romantic and playful than the use of "honey" or "hubby"
[–]sennysun 37 points38 points39 points 9 years ago (34 children) | Copy Link
This is a complete non-issue.
[–]testmypatience 5 points6 points7 points 9 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link
Language use is an issue and always has been. It carries real impact because humanity is stupid that way. Regardless of how stupid, humanity still gives words value and to ignore that is foolish and only shows the pointless ego fluffing of those saying it doesn't matter to others because it doesn't matter to yourself.
[–]sennysun -2 points-1 points0 points 9 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link

[–]Meyright 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
The stuff thats upvoted the most here is sometimes petty, but its not what this sub is about. Its just a reddit thing in general that low effort picture posts or gifs get to the top and not the quality content which requires you to read a study.
[–]whoop_there_she_is 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
Really? Top-rated askreddit posts are fascinating. Top-rated woahdude posts are amazing. Top-rated philosophy posts are insightful. Top reddit truereddit posts are worth a long read and it shows. Even the comments on this thread (and I just looked around the sub, most threads) are atrocious.
[–]Meyright 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Just yesterday we had this three things posted in this sub:
https://digest.bps.org.uk/2017/07/11/sexual-offending-by-women-is-surprisingly-common-claims-us-study/
https://scienmag.com/study-finds-sexism-in-sexual-assault-research-but-this-time-men-are-the-target/
https://www.reddit.com/r/MensRights/comments/6mmp7i/2017_update_to_pews_2014_online_harassment_survey/
Very interesting and highly relevant content that show how needed is it to consider pushing for equal rights for boys and men
Its just that this content is not as easy to digest as those image threads. The subs you mentioned are equally victims of easy low effort content. On askreddit its always the "whats this one thing your dad didn't want you to tell your mom" posts etc. it's the same everywhere.
[–]whoop_there_she_is 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link
I found this really interesting, so I did a bit of digging.
That first study really does have a lot of feminist goals and for that I am thankful! As a member of many feminist groups, it's a shame that all the funding we collect for male rape victims is often rejected by the men we collect it for. They don't want to go to court, they don't want to go to the police. Hopefully with more education about rape and how it can affect both genders, people will be more comfortable sharing their struggles. The 2010 survey, the only one that specified the gender of the rapist (that 79.2% female rapist number) only collected information from about 200 willing interviewees at a crisis shelter, and their extrapolated figure didn't include military rapes. No wonder it was a shocking percentage at first, too bad more studies don't include the sex of the rapist so we could have some more reliable data.
That second article, I'm saving because it's another great feminist article on how rape influences peoples' actions beyond the obvious. I love people who say things like "men and women are fundamentally different and process everything differently!!!!" because studies like this show that's just a harmful stereotype and not based in scientific data at all. Then again, the conclusion of the article is basically just "men have feelings too". Something we feminists have been hailing since the beginning of sociology.
That third article... Well, if you actually read the Pew 2017 article, the majority of harrassment towards both men and women comes from men. This article links a study where the department of investigation found that over 80% of online harrassment cases had male perpetrators.
Unfortunately, the comments on all three of these posts were riddled with really shitty, really sexist, really inflammatory and simply wrong content and opinions. As much as I fight for the rights of men within my own feminist groups, this subreddit is simply not the place for me and my kind. We donate to mens' abuse centers, we contribute to conversations surrounding male issues, we wish to create a more positive dialogue between angry people, but I certainly don't feel welcome here.
EDIT:// see, I have no hostility in this thread and I'm being downvoted with no comments. Is this the kind of sub you want MensRights to be?
[–]Meyright 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
As a member of many feminist groups, it's a shame that all the funding we collect for male rape victims is often rejected by the men we collect it for.
Do you have a source for that? Is there a way you can prove your many feminists groups have donated to men's issues?
the majority of harrassment towards both men and women comes from men
Can you cite the table which shows that this is the case? I couldn't find it
This article links a study where the department of investigation found that over 80% of online harrassment cases had male perpetrators.
No, they DIDN'T found that. The only thing that this shows is that women are more likely to file a report when getting harassed!
We donate to mens' abuse centers, we contribute to conversations surrounding male issues
May I ask to which men's abuse center you personally have donated?
we contribute to conversations surrounding male issues
You don't though. You tried to dismiss or deflect EVERY claim somehow, made it a feminist issue and tried to show ONCE AGAIN that its actually men who are to blame. Typical feminist response.
Unfortunately, the comments on all three of these posts were riddled with really shitty, really sexist, really inflammatory and simply wrong content and opinions.
This is a bold claim, citation needed!
we wish to create a more positive dialogue between angry people, but I certainly don't feel welcome here.
Maybe if you didn't start off with saying this sub is filled with petty issues and start coming here in good faith, people would start to take you seriously. This sub is not a feminist hug box or safe space, and that is a good thing. Though we don't ban people we disagree with, other than EVERY single feminist space I encountered! If you want to make your point, nobody is holding you back. But don't expect anybody to agree with you.
[–]whoop_there_she_is 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link
Is there a way you can prove your many feminists groups have donated to men's issues?
Without disclosing my exact location in the continental US, no. I have no interest in doxxing myself to prove a point. BUT because I constantly (and I mean constantly!) recieve vitriol from reddit guys about how feminists don't care about men (like lol really? do you even know what feminism is), and a group of us tired ones actually put together this enormous document showing just some of the many ways in which the feminist movement pioneered many of the "Mens' Rights" movements you guys are fighting for! We're seriously on the same team, and most of the most reasonable and trustworthy feminists I know on reddit are men. Too bad to read so much lame, toxic "alpha male/cuck"-type language being thrown around in this subreddit, it means you aren't taken seriously by parties who are literally donating most of the money towards your causes. Absolutely check out more of our affiliated subreddits, because you especially seem super intelligent and you are always welcome in reddit feminist circles. We could use more people like you.
Sure! I actually have a direct quote for ya- "Stalking, off and online, is a crime in which men are the majority of perpetrators and women the targets. Justice Department records reveal that 70 percent of those stalked online are women. More than 80 percent of cyber-stalking defendants are male. Similarly, a study of 1,606 revenge porn cases showed that 90 percent of those whose photos were shared were women, targeted by men. In gaming, an industry known for endemic sexism, studies cited by Citron show that 70 percent of women in multiplayer games play as male characters in order to avoid abuse." A secondary source that backs up this information is this article here, found by clicking the link a little higher on the article.
The only thing that this shows is that women are more likely to file a report when getting harassed!
So how can we know to trust any of the information in these articles? Anyone could lie! Anyone could file a report! Nothing is real!
See how stupid that sounds? I understand we have a ways to go, but this is a far cry from proving institutionalized sexism against men.
It's called the Mankind Initiative! Have you heard about it? Thanks to a local donation drive we did, we not only raised enough to keep the mens' abuse hotine open through 2017, but also were able to raise enough to donate legal aid to a local father trying to gain custody of his kids!! We have a huge male feminist support system in my city and I am so happy to have them around.
Typical feminist response.
See, this is why the other subs don't respect you guys. I see bitterness, I see memes against women, I see intense amounts of misinformation. Your top stickied post is an x-post from TheRedPill, for crissakes. It's too bad, but thankfully this sub isn't representative of all men. The power of strong local communities overpowers all kinds of internet ragemongering. Don't get trapped trying to defend people who aren't actually making a strong powerful force in your movement, especially if your desire to protect free speech means that most of your userbase has the goal of attacking and belittling the movements that help men in crisis the most. Good luck! Considering these kinds of posts are time-consuming and relatively frustrating, I will not be posting again.

As someone who isn't subscribed, so only sees posts via /r/all, most of the posts I see are like this. The last one was a picture of a woman taking up an extra seat on the train with her handbag.
If the regulars here really care more about actual human rights than about petty shit, then it would be good to consider how they think the movement would best be viewed by outsiders before upvoting things like this.
[–]sennysun -2 points-1 points0 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
If he knew it was a non issue why'd he post it? Nothing about this post suggests he was just being petty. Seems like OP was taking it seriously, which is kind of embarrassing.
[–]DarkLorde117 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
The point of this post is that it displays one of many ways in which double-standards pit society against men. It is not a massive issue that needs to be addressed immediately. It is not even an issue in it's own right, but it is relevant to men's rights issues. Therefore, it belongs here.
[–]sennysun -2 points-1 points0 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
How is this being pitted against men? This is showing that two different words have two different meanings. When women say 'hubby' it's usually affectionate, when men say 'wifey' they use it condescendingly. They're different words used in different ways. It's not an issue.
[–]DarkLorde117 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
In my experience they're not really used differently. And this is not single-handedly an issue. It's an incredibly small thing. My point is that it's one of several incredibly small cases where you could say "it'd be different if it were a dude," but it's not worth starting a fight about. That doesn't mean it isn't worth posting.

Anotherone for my list. Here are the other ones I've got so far:
The definition of Sexism in google is: prejudice, stereotyping, or discrimination, typically against women, on the basis of sex.
the definition of Rape if you google "rape definition", is : unlawful sexual activity and usually sexual intercourse carried out forcibly or under threat of injury against the will usually of a female or with a person who is beneath a certain age or incapable of valid consent—compare sexual assault, statutory rape.
Also, look at Google's doodles for International Women's Day 8 total since 2005 as opposed to International Men's Day not even one
And also the defenition in Google of facism is "an authoritarian and nationalistic right-wing system of government and social organization." Although not directly a mens issue, it still helps show Google's leanings.

Try putting next to an actually offensive term for clarity. "Hey slut, hey bitch, hey dishwasher" "Hey hun, hey babe, hey wifey"
Which are offensive? Hope this helps!

You people are insane.
[–]boringcarpets -4 points-3 points-2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Out of all the things posted, why does petty pointless bullshit like this get over 1000 upvotes?
[–]Zandernator -1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
That's pretty dumb but at this point googling "hubby" and "wifey" is just looking for reasons to get offended.
[–]Zandernator -1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I'm saying this sub makes fun of sjw's for getting mad at word definitions. How does complaining about this further anything to do with men's rights?
[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
big·ot ˈbiɡət/ noun a person who is intolerant toward those holding different opinions.
??? How are they being bigoted ???
I'm still confused as to how Oxford Online / Google are being bigoted. Unless you're referring to something else.
[+]Hessmix -8 points-7 points-6 points 9 years ago* (4 children) | Copy Link
I-I'm not sure I think that "wifey" is on the same level as "hubby." I don't know why, it just doesn't sound right.
Are we down to nitpicking the small stuff now? Have all the other problems been solved?
[–]HusbandofAgrias 7 points8 points9 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
It's not a major issue, however I am interested to hear in one way wifey can be condescending, because saying it out loud it sounds just the wife equivalent to hubby, even in a condescending tone, there are a dozen words like honey that flow out more naturally

I use it all the time, she thinks it's goofy but never has she ever taken it as me being condescending or anything negative.
I've never heard it used snarkish, however I asked a question and it was answered honestly.

[–]AHeartOfGoal -1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
I'm late, this will get buried/downvoted, blah blah blah...
I was actually intrigued by this and decided to do some digging. From what I can tell, Google (Or, rather, the source they're pulling from) is wrong about the definition and should reword it to make more sense. See, "hubby" does in fact simply mean "husband". There isn't really any other definition for it that I can find. Just a shortening. However, "wifey" has a couple of different meanings. The most prevalent from what I have found (and why I would wager that many women find it offensive in general) is that it's a slang term used to describe a woman you keep around because they are "better" than your "other girls"/"side chicks"/etc, but you won't marry them because you don't do that/you're a player/you are afraid of commitment/whatever. In my opinion, the Google definition should say something like "1. a derogatory slang term used to describe a woman that is providing the benefits of marriage to a partner without the commitment of legal marriage. 2. a wife". At least give a bit of context as to why it's considered "condescending". Colloquialisms are important here.
[–]brieflynuttycupcake 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
This is great information. Thanks for taking the time to research it and I agree it should consist of more details.
[–]alclarkey 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
And here's the problem I have with that. We attach "y" to the end of lots of words and it's almost always meant as a term of endearment. Doggy, Danny, Matty, Kitty, etc. So I think we can be forgiven for also thinking of it as a term of endearment. And because some assholes use it as a derogatory term, doesn't mean they own it. And finally it's pretty apparent that it's not the slang version that google is presenting.

you fucking guys lmao
[–]Gristley -4 points-3 points-2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
This is dumb. The only people I've ever heard one, use the other, and neither is meant to be condescending. Everyone else doesn't use them because they're both condescending.

Are these the rights that are under attack?
[–]alclarkey 3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (17 children) | Copy Link
Yes. It indicates a prevalent negative societal attitude towards men that translates into a whole host injustices committed against men.
[–]OhManOk 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (15 children) | Copy Link
Seriously, you're just going to downvote me instead of talking about it?
This is a parody of the MRA movement.
"Men's rights are under attack. Did you see the definition of wifey versus hubby?"
Whatever, fuck off.
[–]alclarkey 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (14 children) | Copy Link
Is there some trick in reddit that allows you to discover who downvoted you that I didn't know about? Because it wasn't me. So how would you even have me as a target for your dumbass response IF I DIDN'T COMMENT? But it does look like you had a couple people do that, and they were well within their rights to do so.
[–]OhManOk 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (13 children) | Copy Link
When I said "you," I meant "you people" as in "you people downvoting me instead of having a conversation about it." Like a lot of subreddits, this obviously isn't a place for conversation, it's a circle jerk of bitching about nonsense.
[–]alclarkey 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (12 children) | Copy Link
Is it possible that those other people simply decided that my response didn't need any embellishment?
[–]OhManOk 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link
I... guess? Like I said, this doesn't appear to be a place for conversation. If this subject is a representation of your cause and someone wants to talk about it, why talk about it? Just downvote and don't discuss it so that no one gets anywhere. Good job guys, changing hearts and minds.
[–]alclarkey 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link
I'm conversing with you. That's the whole irony of this thing, but if you can't see how an attitude that everything men do is evil/bad/suspect/etc is harmful, I'm not sure what else there is to say to you.
[–]OhManOk 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link
I think you're making up that attitude, or listening only to extremists, who no one is defending.
[–]alclarkey 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link
That's the whole point of this post. It illustrates the attitude. That's why this kind of thing gets posted here. There are tons of other examples.
[–]OhManOk -2 points-1 points0 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
One source has this description. The description is absurd. No one really believes this.
Victim Victim Victim.
When you google it, there is a little Feedback word you can click on below the meaning. I sent them a well worded complaint about the double standards they are using. I said saying wifey is demeaning while saying hubby is normal is sexist.
[–]StyL_stealth -1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
TIL that apparently that's offensive. Fuck that
And the shittiest posts get upvoted the most...fuck the mods here are stupid.

So what
[+][deleted] -12 points-11 points-10 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Let's be real I've never heard wifey before and that does sound like something I'd say to my broad after she puts the TV remote in the freezer. "Honey" is the proper analogue here and Merriem Webster has that defined simply as someone you love or an attractive woman.
[–][deleted] 20 points21 points22 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Okay, I'll be real: I've heard wifey used plenty and it's an earnest term of endearment - never seen it used condescendingly.
How the fuck is Honey the analogue?
[–]OnyxDarkKnight 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I now want honey cookies.
Honey is used in condescending ways in almost every medium, you see a misogynist or a playboy in a movie, he has a 110% chance to call a waitress honey in a not endearing way, and in my experience, only young couples use it in the endearing context.
[–][deleted] -3 points-2 points-1 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Are you actually implying you didn't know different words have different meanings?
They aren't equal just because they rhyme. This is astoundingly retarded.
[–]agreenway -3 points-2 points-1 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Merriam-Webster shows differently. Google top result is not a great source of information.
[–]Fevercrumb1848 -3 points-2 points-1 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
This is so dumb. Just putting the same letters on the end of words doesn't make them equivalent.
Hubby =/= Wifey. Just look at the context used for each. It's genuinely pathetic. Why don't you fight for some real mensrights and don't debase yourselves further.
[–]manners_maketh_men -4 points-3 points-2 points 9 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link
Why is this in r/mensright? The inequality is towards women. If a woman calls a man hubby, not condescending, but if a man called a woman wifey, it is. So isn't it ineqality towards women?
