I always found that "diversity" crap more like "justified racism" than an empowering mechanism to provide equality.

BTW, scholarships should be about how much you need it regardless gender, ethnicity, etc.

My brother got into university for being a minority in the program he applied for. His GPA was average and his SAT score was average, but he applied to a nursing program at a four year university and was accepted where one of his female friends from school with a similar GPA/SAT/high school experience did not. He's also gay so that could be considered minority status (I think he wrote about gay rights in his essay), but I don't think there's a box about sexuality on the application.

Some schools do offer advantages to men who apply to nursing or education programs in the same way that STEM programs offer advantages to women and it's a shame that this one does not. It seems like it's more of an incentive than discrimination to me. I don't think just being a man or woman should be a specific preference unless the school or program itself is trying to increase the number of women that apply to their programs.

If I were to guess, programs like this use a point system and applicants receive the bulk of their points for their actual qualifications like grades, experience, etc, as well as parent's income. They receive a small proportion of the overall score from being a so called minority and where they live. If two applicants have exactly the same experience and grades, they choose the person that would be considered a minority in the program. For example, I live in NC. If you apply to UNC Chapel Hill and you are from Zebulon or some other bum fuck town, you receive more points than someone from Raleigh (where the school system is significantly better, thus making it more competitive for students in there).

I don't see how that would be considered discrimination unless the person had higher qualifications but still was not chosen. Targeted employment equity is designed to allow people to break into a field that is dominated by one corner of the demographic, not to restrict qualified individuals from getting into a program or getting a job.

My school is actually working on financial aid for men in non-traditional careers. I wish more post-secondary institutions would follow suit. When you're a broke student, financial aid can sometimes make or break your ability to complete your education.

The question is asking what identify yourself as. I run studies all the time that use this verbiage. You could be Anglo with an American ancestry going back generations and still identify as a visible minority. Unless they have very specific instructions on how you're allowed to answer those questions, you can literally check all those boxes even if you don't objectively fall into those categories.

This needs to be taken to someone in authority in your institution. Also it seems as if they are discriminating on the basis of gender here. That is illegal in Canada under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

Last time I checked the M/F ratio in nursing was about 1:19.

It's shit like this. A good family friend of ours has a few nursing homes, do you think he can get staff? Full time nurses account for about 50% of his payroll whilst the rest are all temps. Which he has to pay more and, since they're not full-time, don't give a shit and don't fill out records properly.

It seems to me a good way to fix this problem is to encourage more male nurses! But no, lets give more easy-breaks to women who simply do not need them.

I'm not for big government in general. But, if our big government (and out culture) was truly about equality you would have grants, scholarships, special counseling, special employment opportunities, and so forth just for being a male entering a female dominated field. Alas, we know our culture is misandric and women don't want equality but supremacy (please no whiny NAWALT repies, I know there are exceptions to everything).

They tend to really split hairs on these things. I have a friend who's mother is Half white and Half Hispanic. His father is Japanese. He was born in Argentina, and lived there for 12 years. Spanish is his first language. When he applied for as a "Hispanic" for a university-funded scholarship in the States, they actually sent him a letter asking for a picture. Two weeks later they rejected him for apparently not being "Hispanic" enough.

Yeah I hate this shit, I'm in the EXACT SAME boat as OP. Nursing is fucking expensive but I get absolutely zero for being a male in nursing. Meanwhile, women in chemistry at my university have the opportunity for an extra $10,000 over the course of 4 years for having a ~~good grade avg~~Oh wait, I meant having a vagina. That's literally the only requirement for that scholarship. So I'm stuck getting pissed on by OSAP (Provincial Student Loans for you Americans out there) and what limited money I can scrape together for books.

I hate to break it to you kid, but being 18 single with no kids you don't deserve any sort of break or help at all.

I realize that it was their choice to have kids and such but what makes you important in any way? Their lives are obviously harder... specifically women or any single parents... there are also several categories below that are TOUGH and some that you probably fit in to IE first generation student, if not then your parents went to college and you shouldn't be begging the government for money and complaining about not having a vagina on reddit.
