No one who knows anything about the way America works would ever really think that its rulers would want to let silly gender prejudices keep them from creating new consumers, much less let religion get in the way of productivity. The Baptist loonies are suckers to be wooed in election years, no more. They are useful as janitors in peacetime, cannon-fodder in war. Making them into the rulers of a nightmare vision of America is, by a charitable estimation, very naive. If we were to consider it less charitably, it might seem downright suspect. Atwood, who shares about 99.9% of her DNA with America’s real rulers, cannot see them at all, and so fails to notice their hegemony. As she confessed in boasting about her achievement in Handmaid’s Tale, she borrowed horror-stories about the treatment of women in loser countries like Iraq and applied them to the US. Apparently she could not see the horror which really does suffuse American life—a horror which has absolutely nothing to do with that losers’ club, Islam.

Handmaid’s Tale is meant to reassure every wretched office-worker who goes home to a cat, a VCR, and Pizza-for-one that her life is noble and progressive. Handmaid’s Tale is fun horror-fiction for women who work in the American-style cubicle-world precisely because it’s so utterly unrelated to the miseries and terrors of their own lives. No one wants to force middle-class American women to have babies. In fact, it’s almost impossible for them to contemplate having kids, because they’re terrified that it might set them back in their careers, and their rivals in the adjacent cubicles would grab their parking spaces and health plans. Nobody wants to use their bodies. That’s precisely the horror with which they live: no one wants to mate with them because in their world, every single striver must fear every other, and the sort of joint action involved in mating and rearing one’s young is impossible—laughable, a thing which only those who have abandoned the hope of A Career can contemplate. So in their minds, mating and rearing children moves down in class, becoming a thing for rednecks and (though they’ll never say this part out loud) immigrants-of-color. The desire to have children gets bounced outside oneself, onto these lesser beings, and returns, courtesy of Atwood, in demonized form, as the tyranny of procreation, family values and the Patriarchy. It’s the horror they love to fear.

I mentioned the movie Coyote Ugly in an earlier tweet and I can't forget it because despite not being sexually explicit it was very effective grooming.

It was rated PG 13+ and the hit song "Cant Fight The Moonlight" was the favourite song of every other 10 year old I knew in 2000/2001. The actresses were beautiful and their characters were cool and relateable. We loved the music and dancing and clothes.

So we were a bunch of broke girls who had already had men take what they wanted from us and then this movie came along and showed us that being sexy for a living was a glamorous and fun option and punctuated the message with a catchy tune and romantic subplot.

I wouldn't hang it all on that movie but it stands out to me because I would say it played an equal role in my grooming as the literal pornography I was exposed to. It was all part of the same big ugly picture.

Men wish to be desired as a woman is desired

I think there's distinct male spin on it - men have a need to feel needed, to exercise blind loyalty, regardless of whether it's valued or not. This can have bizarre implications - like the man may know you hate him - and he'll even keep distance to respect your hate. But as long you need him, the desire is satisfied, even if you see no value in him whatsoever. This is something profoundly alien to women, but quite common to how men see things. There's distinct lack of desire for emotional feedback women have.

Sounds fair enough. The way I see it, women wanted to be valued, for there to be tangible feedback for "emotional labor" they do (just using some of the more bizzarre lingo). In some aspects as capitalism allows it, they suceeded. But that's just shallow value in terms of money and career opportunity. Spiritually it's far harder because what's going on here is a call for equity (for which empathetic feedback is a necessity), but most men aren't really showing signs they'll give equity a chance, not for themselves, nor women. You'd need to shatter their entire sense of justice first.

In a country where men are still running everything, that you guys sit here and claim that feminists are literally destroying men makes you seem irrational and unbalanced. And fucking triggered.

Seems like a lot of the hostility toward “feminism” is really just hostility toward women in general. This is just the logical conclusion that anyone watching this play out would make.

The source I had for this seems to be non working https://nces.ed.gov/pubs2019/2019486.pdf but people who’ve been around here for a while will remember me sharing this stat multiple times in the past.

So yes a small number of academic and need based scholarships are actually gender based.

However let’s look at the category where the majority of college scholarships are : sports. Despite title 9, men still get more athletic scholarships than women:

I've heard of Womanism but looking at Wikipedia (very reliable, I know), it was coined in 1979. Wikipedia also states that there were initial 'feminist' thoughts being made by Black women in the 1800s but they were ignored by pretty much everyone else.

I know a lot of the initial ideas of third wave/fourth wave feminism were made by Black women like intersectionality, CRT, whatever Bell Hooks was going for etc but all I find from first wave is anti black sentiment.

The first wave is far from the only wave to have janky ideals though. Second wave was white saviour complex turned up to an eleven + terrorizing Erin Pizzey for some reason, and Fourth wave seems to be just taking the black academic ideas + debate between da TERFS and the Intersectionals but the only difference between them is that the TERFS think male children getting abused is based but the TRANS are bad and the Intersectionals also think the moid children getting abused is based but the TRANS are good.

i’m not talking about womanism though, that’s a different thing. i’m talking about black feminism.

from what i had read from a few different places (wikipedia included), black feminism began during slavery in the 1800s.

but it’s hard to tell when these things started because it was so long ago and there’s no way of knowing whether or not the information we’ve been told or have been able to find is accurate.

the way you describe feminism makes sense from the white feminist perspective. i mean no offense by that at all, just my honest truth from where i’m standing.

I'm sorry that you had that experience. One of the (many) problems with feminism is that it is has historically been upheld by upper-class women. It doesn't surprise me that they would be unsympathetic to issues of a working class man, tho that is certainly disappointing.

Yeah working class kid who is struggling to try and complete high school because of poverty and worried about being able to pay for college gets yelled at and insulted and told he is privileged by women is not exactly going to make him continue to be an ally. When he asks why he is not getting scholarships despite having a high GPA and coming from a poor background he gets insulted and told women or other minorities deserve it more. When he points out the discrimination he experienced from women teachers he is told he is making things up. Conversations and incidents like that were common for me for years.

And as long as the issues you had weren't annoying "gotchas" then it's also too bad the feminists you were talking too weren't willing to engage your points. But on the other hand, no one wants to debate with someone who isn't speaking in good faith.

They thought I was trying to imply something when in reality I was just questioning. To continue with the religious analogy it would be like me asking about the idea of omnipotence and thinking it is an impossibility and their reaction being to kick me out of the church because I dared to question to doctrine and dogma of the church even though it was a genuine question not me saying god doesn't exist. Feminists are religious fanatics and they will burn anyone who even so much as dares to question them at the stake which leads to a lot of apostates who are bitterly fucking angry at them like me. The level of anger I have towards feminists is like a Jew who survived the holocaust towards Germans.

Well they kicked me out of the village and ostracized me for years so yeah pretty much. Because of them I had to suffer more when I was already suffering for example dealing with discrimination by women teachers who had been indoctrinated by feminism. Because of them I had a harder time getting a job due to affirmative action bullshit. Because of them their were no scholarships for people like me and I had to work my way through college which was real fucking fun let me tell you working overnight in a warehouse making 14 dollars an hour then going to class the next day without sleep. etc Meanwhile my women classmates were sugar dating their way through college or getting daddies money and getting internships and jobs just because they had a vagina.

A lot of these women have since quit the work force and are now stay at home mothers meaning them stealing positions and money from me was even more pointless.

But yeah I hear ya - dogmatism for any ideology is a bad look which is not conducive to productive debate. Just because someone is male doesn't mean they won't experience significant hardships equal to or worse than a woman and/or a person of color
