I hear hypergamy being mainly attributed to females. Same with hyperamorous cheating (monkey branching, alpha chasing, upgrading etc.) But after hanging out in the break up side of reddit, I'm starting to realize guys do it too. And I thought about my own preferences and desires in terms of standards for who I would marry. I realized that everyone I know wants the best deal, the most compatible mate, and the wealthiest option. We don't want broke losers, whiners, chronically unemployed, drug addicted basket cases. Girls and guys want to date someone similar or better than themselves. Saying no to someone who could improve our lives a lot compared to our current person really produces a lot of subconscious regrets, especially when our current partner is on the decline or stagnant/complacent, and just "gave up". The person who is still building their list of suitors and comparing who is the best fit doesnt pair well with someone who has decided their best pick already. It's a game of Settlers vs Spinners, and settlers often lose when the spinners find someone with a better romantic deal. But it doesnt feel like a female only thing.
