I think there probably are a lot of 5'4" women who want a man who reads as "tallish" to her and select 6'+ on apps, but would be fine with a man who is 5'9" IRL, especially if he reads as broad and otherwise masculine.

Just like there are a lot of men who would be ok with a woman "with a little extra" (like BMI 24-26 w/ T&A but put "slim" and "athletic" as qualifiers.

I grew up mostly in the 90s and have young adulthood in the 2000s and it was always a preference but its not anything like it is right now. Its gotten crazy.

OLD makes it easier for women to filter for height, though. A 5'3 woman isn't going to notice much difference between a 5'10 guy and a 6' guy in real life, but she might reject him on OLD

Women have always flocked to taller men. I even heard stories of older women from past generations who married their husbands because "he was so tall and handsome". It was always a thing. But back then, the women had limited options so, they would then settle for the shorter man if the tall men were taken. It may be more cutthroat now due to OLD and literally having worldwide options. But taller men were always preferred.

I remember like 20 years ago, my friend (who is 6'4) and I went to a (mostly immigrant) Hispanic club where the men were generally on the short side. And I remember when we walked in, the women immediately took notice and hovered around him like flies on shit.

No, I am pretty sure all of these traits like height which are attractive come down to evolutionary/biological reasons. I am sure shorter guys got laid more often in the past but that was simply because of the socially enforced monogamy and marriage but I doubt those women found them particularly attractive, they just didn't really have much of a choice.

A big problem is honestly the English measuring system. 5 feet is really short and 7 feet is stretching the limits of the human body, so if you want a nice, round number for a somewhat workable standard, 6 feet is your only choice.

If we used metric, we'd round to the next highest 10cm, an inch being 2.54 cm.

I do think social media and dating apps have played a role in women prioritizing a man's height. I think before women have always wanted a guy that was taller than them, but the preference to have a guy 6ft or higher wasn't as much pf a priority.

In part I think it's because online you can be more picky than you would be in person. Whereas in person, woman aren't taking out a measuring stick, but many of them are just looking for someone taller than them that makes them feel secure.

With that said, I do think women have gained leverage in the dating marketplace through online dating apps. They have a multitude of suitors made available to them, compared to guys, and therefore can stick to a preference of only dating guys 6ft or taller even though only 14.5% in the US fit this description.

Yes, although mostly because the dating market was easier in the past and if you go back far enough dating didn't exist at all.

I would say the desire for height is probably around 50% biological and 50% cultural. As a basic example one of my aunts is 5'0 and she has said that a guy would be too tall for her at 6'1. Whereas nowadays you will see 5'0 girls going after guys who are 6'6 and the notion of too tall practically doesn't exist.

A lot of it is social pressure from other women. We constantly describe men as tall as if we're talking about about his dick or something.

I get the appeal, some tall men are hot AF, but they're also lots of 5'7 men who look proportion and sexy as well.

I'd date them in a second because I'm 5'4", but if I did, I'd never hear the end of it from my friends.

I think it’s largely that dating apps make being short a glaringly obvious barrier whereas with IRL dating the preference against shortness wasn’t constantly being shoved in your face the way it is online. This makes it easy (and understandable) for short guys, even slightly short guys, to become insecure about it.

I also think the sheer number of men on apps also makes women choosier, and height being a discrete variable makes it a really easy metric to filter on, so I’d bet women make it a bigger deal on apps than they would IRL as well.

At any rate, yeah I think short guys would have fared a bit better in the past. This due to some combination of being more confident due to not having their “flaw” so visibly working against them AND the gender skew of online dating making women choosier on metrics they wouldn’t really make dealbreakers IRL.

I'm a 5'8" guy who had no trouble dating in my generation. If I take the word today of men who struggle, then yeah, I'd have to say that social media and dating apps must be playing a part.

However, I still see shorter young men walking around with their short girlfriends, so it makes me believe that the young men of today's generation who are complaing are actually exaggerating and that their real issue is likely a lack of social skills compared to the men of my generation.

I’m sure these women will never believe that I’m less than 6 foot. Most men lie about their heights. So 6 foot requirement is in fact 5 9. It has always been important. It's just that in the past women needed a man to be around them, protect them and provide, so they settled in the looks department.

Men don't need to lock down a particular man nowadays, and they can have sex freely without any social repercusions, without undesired outcomes such as pregnancy and outside commited relationships, at least while they are young.

When their looks fade away and the baby rabbies and stability start to kick in, they settle again for looks and get married.

That's why the average age for women getting married has gone up in the last decades and it's around 30 right now.
