What most people miss is that a company's job is not only to hire the best candidates but also to create a productive, creative, efficient and sustainable work environment. Any algorithm with this objective would demand fair representation of all genders since it is part of the social fabric.
Obviously you've never led a competitive workplace. Businesses care more about sustainability than total output. Women bring a different skill set to a team that men just can not. I am not being a SJW here, this is plain logic.
This has been an issue since the 80s. (70s?) Statistical analysis programs have shown that certain demographic groups are bad insurance risk. But insurance companies couldn't set rates accordingly because these groups matched gender and race boundaries and it'd have been discrimination. So now those of us who're not bad risks pay higher rates to compensate, because it'd look bad if only demographic groups that are bad risk paid more.
Honest statistical analysis shows all kinds of things that are taboo in the present day theocracy.
amazon told when this came out they had used data from previous hires, meaning it would mirror the behavior and biases that were currently in action.
If male candidates passed the interviews at higher relative rates in the past, then it's not a wrong assumption to expect them to continue to pass interviews at a higher relative rate in the future.
it also depends heavily on the field, say for example the position is office based, there is little to no difference in possible work out put of a man vs a women when ignoring factors such as pregnacy. On a side note, men should get paternity leave, taking care of a baby is hard, and if my wife just shat a 9 pound human out of her vag i kinda wanna be there to help while she recovers you know?
For example I'm an archaeologist, many of my coworkers are women, its a fairly female dominated field in my experience. Yet on any given day, i will be doing upwards of 70% of the actual work either myself or with the help of the few other men in the company. I don't blame the women for not being as strong or have the same stamina and endurance, but I produce a significantly bigger portion of the daily work output.
As a worker i am orders of magnitude more valuable than 95% of the women in my company, if i were to run my own company i would likely hire as many men as i can oppsed to women.
Not to say they aren't very nice people whom i greatly enjoy working with, but if everytime they encounter hard physical labor ( such as say digging through layers of ashphalt and concrete with a breaking bar) they need my help or will have no hope if finishing their task. Why am i being paid the same or less?
So in conclusion gender is far from irrelevant, infact its VERY relevant. A women can be as interested in a field and as dedicated as they want. If she can't physically do the job she shouldn't be hired a la diversity. Especially in more physically demanding jobs, where my out of shape male coworkers are out preforming my in shape female coworkers just due to the massive difference in raw strength.
ps. i just want to rant about the lack of physical standards, while my female coworkers are all more or less on par in strength stamina and endurance, that is not the case with non company staff. If the job involves high intensity physical labour, and you are not only disadvantaged as a women of small stature, its NOT OK to be 60% body fat and require frequent breaks. Bitch hit the gym and get on a diet, i'm sick and tired of having to pick up the slack and do 5x the work cause your fat ass can't screen dirt for more than 15 mins at a time. I'm literally hacking through cement for hours on end, you fucking wage thief.
Right from the start the applications being fed into the AI should have had gender, race and any other irrelevant attribute stripped out
Lol, if they produce different outcomes then they are not irrelevant. The most you can say is that you don't like what they show because of your feels.
Yes, it actually marked down females for being female.
It marked them down because results show that female outcomes are worse. Therefore if you want to distribute opportunity to achieve the best outcomes you have to overweight those (non-females) that are more likely to produce better outcomes.
The opportunity they're given is scaled to their likelyhood of success. You're arguing they're given disproportionately more opportunity, even thought this is a waste of resources and unfair to men, because vagina.
People should be judged on their individual merits not based on which group they belong to.
This applies to men. They shouldn't get disproportionally less opportunity because they're men.
You can't maintain a functioning society while attempting to cater to every weirdo and miraculous exception. Society should worry about getting the best results for the majority.
Are you positive review scores and career growth were excluded? What was used as target then? If it was interview success rates then the same argument still applies. (But seriously, anybody designing a ML system like this would reach for review scores first.)
I recall reading about a similar project, I'm not sure it was exactly this. My recollection is that review scores were used. But it's been some time ago and I don't have a link at hand.
I'm pretty sure they anonymized and excluded race, because it's already illegal to discriminate based on those. If those characteristics turned out to correlate, that's emerging from the rest of the data. Nobody knows you're a dog until you get to the face-to-face interview. (there being a white male is a distinct disadvantage because you're not filling any quotas)
Machine learning systems like this are designed by picking a target you want to optimize/classify for. In this case that's likely success in the position if hired. You use (anonymized) resumes of present and past employees and train the system to identify/guess what kind of resumes correlate with high job performance. When you have the system trained, you feed it the (anonymized) resumes of applicants, and it spits out which resumes are similar to the resumes of your successful employees.
test the applicants
A general problem with interview tests is that you end up hiring people who are good test takers. You miss people who would be great employees, but don't do well in an exam type situation. Others might be good at tests but could be shitty to work with.
Because the outcome of male skew (which I have no problem with) was also the input into opportunity, it became biased.
While that's possible I suspect the system was more sophisticated, and controlled for that. Things that we can point out in ten minutes of thinking the dev team has also thought of. People working on these systems are not dumb, they had a lot more time, and I guarantee that HR was breathing on their necks to ensure everything was on the up and up. And still this is what came out of the data.
The algorithms learned to assign little significance to skills that were common across IT applicants
That's an interesting outcome, though understandable in hindsight.
favored candidates who described themselves using verbs more commonly found on male engineers’ resumes
I assume they were looking at resumes of successful candidates. If people using "male verbs" passed the interviews relatively more often, then it's a reasonable guess that candidates with "male verbs" will successfully pass interviews more often in the future too.
The only way to screw this up if they didn't take success/failure into account, just simply used all the raw resumes. I don't see how anyone could consider that a good idea.
"In the case of the Amazon project, there were a few ways this happened. For example, the tool disadvantaged candidates who went to certain women’s colleges presumably not attended by many existing Amazon engineers. It similarly downgraded resumes that included the word “women’s” — as in “women’s rugby team.” And it privileged resumes with the kinds of verbs that men tend to use, like “executed” and “captured.”"
In other words the AI saw a large male employee base, took that to mean "male is good", then looked for signals that the applicant was male.
Now I'm on the bloke side of this sub, I'm not some covert third wave feminist who runs around calling guys incels. I piss off those SJWs. But in this case I'm just looking at the facts.
i never check up this sub but am subbed. i see comments all the time like yours. again, why come here then? cuz i normally don't. what makes you any different?
e: we all get it, there are assholes here leftover from the real pussypasses. they are not all winners. and this post is only in "rising" rn. yet you're acting like this has 20-40k upvotes
The AI identified productivity risk for women that men don't have, which is the potential for pregnancy might have a negative impact on productivity outcome. That's a risk higher than 0%. It's an honest assessment where people don't like the comparison and outcome; this is where the label biased slides just in when the discrepancy is not favourable to a particular political narrative. Had it been another advantageous arrangement towards said narrative, it would just slide under the radar as it usually does.
The same thing has been observed when running statistical analysis on various groups of people in insurance, where individual customers are now compensating for other customers premium cost because people don't like the fact that certain groups of people pose a much higher risk than other people, rather than making people pay for their respective premium and their own calculated risk. It wouldn't be fair, but it's still an accurate calculation.
In this case it just took previous examples of women being rejected and did the same thing.
It was trained on resumes of hires. If males passed the interviews at higher relative rates in the past, it's reasonable to assume they'll continue to do so in the future. Therefore preferring them will lead to higher rate of successful interviews in the future, yes?
Oh! Sorry for disagreeing with discrimination and sexism!
This once was a sub dedicated to posts showing women not getting not they want when their only argument was their gender (aka pussy pass) , or getting equal treatment as men. Now you all are celebrating when some women didn't get a job.
Now that is sexism right there. That is no equal treatment or anything like that.
Downvote me to hell for all I care. At least I'm not on the wrong side of the book here.
What kind of pathetic loser looks for validation from anyone online? Just because I don’t hate women, and am not a sexist asshole, doesn’t mean I’m anything like you sorry douches.

The opportunity they're given is scaled to their likelyhood of success. You're arguing they're given disproportionately more opportunity, even thought this is a waste of resources and unfair to men, because vagina.

A general problem with interview tests is that you end up hiring people who are good test takers. You miss people who would be great employees, but don't do well in an exam type situation. Others might be good at tests but could be shitty to work with.

That's an interesting outcome, though understandable in hindsight.
