I can't believe this happens in the workplace but last summer I had to make a bathroom policy stating that we are all adults and can attend to our own bathroom needs. I told the woman complaining about the seat being up that what she does in the bathroom is none of my business and what I do in the bathroom is none of her business, the next day I had a meeting with an HR rep about my new sexist and racist bathroom policy. I love all that white male privilege I've got.

Here's how I see it, in public if there is no urinal available than it doesn't matter whether you leave the seat up. If the guy has to touch it to put it up than its only fair if the girl has to touch it to put it down. If there are urinals and you use the toilet than put the seat down, the urinal is there so you don't have to touch the seat. At home if the guy is cleaning the toilet than leave it up, if the girl is cleaning the toilet leave it down. If you share household responsibilities than work it out it yourself because you sound like you're smart enough to do so.

This is from some comedian but it's still true. How do women manage to sit their entire ass into the toilet bowl? Look where you're about to sit for two seconds and that problem should be avoided easily. I like to sit when I pee because it's less messy. Not once have I been in danger of sitting on the rim.

I recently had this type of conversation with a relative. She complained that my husband didn't put the seat down and that is was a courtesy. I asked her if she put the seat up when she was done "as a courtesy". Of course her answer was no. I followed up with courtesy went both ways, in my house I don't expect my husband to do something I wouldn't do. I don't put the seat up for him and he doesn't put it down for me. My own nightmare scenario:

What if I use one of those 2000 Flushes things and I forget and leave the seat up and then my dog (no dog yet, but hoping after I move) drinks it and dies?

That just terrifies me. I just leave everything closed, but yes, I admit to doing this early on just to spite the women who insist I leave the seat (not the lid) down.

We're all adults, I'm not about to start pissing on a closed toilet lid, neither are you going to sit down without checking that the seat is down.

My argument against having to put the toilet seat down at work: Why do men have to touch the toilet seat twice and women don't have to touch the seat at all?

We had some single toilets change from gents/ladies to both being unisex at work and someone who went in right after me must have said something because someone else just happened to ask me about it shortly afterwards.

I don't see how women can demand equality and then say they want shit from men (well I can but I'm not having it).

At home I am more flexible because I don't live with any raging feminists who demand equality, and I put the seat down.

IMO it's not so much an issue of gender as an issue of statistics. If there's 50/50 men and women using the same bathroom, it's more likely the seat will have to be down. it just seems considerate to me to have it down (I always put the lid down, too, if there is one).

Whoever left that sign seems like kind of an asshole, though. It's not your house, it's not your bathroom, you don't decide the rules, and you can't force every dude in the workplace to do what you want so you can save .5 seconds.

My argument for why folks should put the seat down in bathrooms unless you know mostly men use that bathroom.

Women use the bathroom with the toilet seat down. Men use the bathroom with the toilet seat in both positions. Assuming an equal use of the bathroom between genders, more folks will need to use the toilet with the seat down than up. Ergo, the most good is served by putting the toilet seat down.

If the toilet has a lid, then I close it every time I use it. Why do toilet's have lids at all? My thinking is that if the lid is closed, then you know the person before you probably flushed and didn't leave a huge mess, because someone who makes a huge mess and doesn't flush, also doesn't close the lid.

It's just objectively logical to put the toilet seat down. In more than half of the cases the next person will need it to be down, as there are also men who need to take a shit.

Also, when you're finished peeing, no matter how solid your technique, there will be a little bit of pee splash on the seat. It's only fair that you touch that yourself, as it feels more dirty to touch another person's piss.
