Was going to make this a Q4men but I’d like to hear women’s perspectives too. So I’d appreciate if you would include your gender in your response.

So here’s my perspective/basic thesis from my perspective:

The cultural dismantling of traditional masculinity left an unfortunate void that was never filled with a concrete let alone better alternative. And three generations in, the chickens have come home to roost. The outlook for young men today is not good to terrible, going all the way up the socioeconomic hierarchy to the UMC.

So what would be your recommendation for how to fill that void?

Now I think that all but the most extremist among us can agree that it’s good/positive that some elements of traditional masculinity have been laid to rest:

  • the promotion of self sacrifice for the interests of those who see men as expendable tools to expand their own power and privilege as the foundation for honor, integrity and what it means to be a man

  • the expectation of rigid conformity and the intense pressure on men to police this conformity among each other (so called “gay bashing” for example)

  • disrespect and unequal treatment of women, and in a larger paradigm, of men lower on the social hierarchy

But in our rush to right the wrongs of the past, perhaps there weren’t enough people saying hey, what’s supposed to replace it? If we’re supposed to accept that men of the past were so bad, how do we teach the men of the future to be good?

I think it’s easy to accept the idea that men should just figure out how to adjust. And if they don’t or can’t they’re sexist. They’re holding on to the past. They want to continue to oppress women for their own benefit.

I think a lot of men aren’t sure how they be today or how they should raise their sons — those that are actively in their son’s lives (which is another issue).

Anyway, so much we could say on the causes and effects: So feel free to include in your response to how would you fill the void if you could.
