Maybe I'm just cynical, but I have this idea that the sort of wholesome, cute romance based on feelings that you see in movies and stuff doesn't really exist anymore once you enter adulthood.

As an adult, it seems like relationships become more of a transaction, and as a man, you're only loved if you have money and resources, or your ability to provide. That's not to say women have it much easier, as their value is placed almost entirely on their looks, youth and beauty, which of course, are all temporary. This is why you see so many 30+ guys with late teens/early 20s women. Men have the money, women have the looks. It's a transaction, if the man didn't have money or the women wasn't as attractive or older, they wouldn't be together.

There's no "I love who for who you are" it's "I love you for what you can provide for me", whether that be in the form of money or sex. I think a big part of it is the social status aspect too, men love to show off their hot 20 year old girlfriend to their friends, and women love to show off how rich and established their boyfriend is.

It just seems to me like the romantic sort of love only exists when you're a teenager or very young adult. Am I being naïve and unrealistic for wanting a adult relationship that is based on genuine love, friendship and appreciation for the other person and not simply "How will this person benefit me"?
