It seems like in the dating world today (1st world Western countries, online dating specifically), it's safe to assume, unless you've asked, that the person you go on a date with is also dating or open to date other people.

I think it's great that people seem to have the choice of "shopping around" like never before, even though I believe that also presents its own set of issues (for those keeping their options open as much as those who don't have that "privilege").

I'm wondering what impact does this widespread-outlook have on the future of dating and human relations in general and what impact it has on particular individuals involved. Anyway, my main question is the title.
