What I think is most egregious is the fact this article exists and that she agreed to tell this story. I don't think it's unreasonable to leave a relationship where you've suddenly been forced into a caretaker role that's affecting your mental health, but essentially gloating about it, sharing the story around, seeking mass validation, that's fucked. As if the guy didn't have it bad enough, now his ex is on a campaign to turn herself into the victim.

[–]ProphetOfChastity 206 points207 points208 points 3 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link

Indeed but not only that, we all know that if a story ever came out about a man ditching his gf with cancer for the sale of his mental health, he would be absolutely destroyed by the same people who smirk or shrug when the woman does it. It is just another of a thousand examples of the double standard which is promoted by feminists and gynocentric socieities. That which is toxic and deplorable for a man to do is tolerated if not celebrated and promoted when women do it. Yet feminists will always moan that women are the ones disadvantaged by such double standards. Truly is a religious cult.

[–]Tarmek121 points 3 years ago [recovered] (4 children) | Copy Link

I agree with this. My sister pointed me to a study recently that said men are more likely to leave an ill spouse. And while that might be true I put it into perspective for her that it’s not the rule across all situations. When I asked her well, why is it that 80% of divorces are initiated by women she didn’t have a response. So while one subset of those divorces may actually point to the fact that men are more likely to leave when a spouse is ill, it still doesn’t merit painting all men as terrible when you take a look at the overall divorce rate.

[–]Peter_Principle_ 54 points55 points56 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Another thing to keep in mind is that Americans have usurious health care systems. Some of those "husbands leave their sick wives" situations are done to qualify for financial aid or to compartmentalize household resources.

[–]PassifloraCaerulea 17 points18 points19 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

What I assume is that same study had to be retracted due to a coding mistake. Found the link elsewhere in the comments, but it needs to be repeated. I hadn't heard about it either.

I guess it depends on how far the relationship is, but I think it’s pretty scummy to leave your partner if a lifelong commitment has been made and agreed upon.

I will say I’m not in that position so it might just be easy for me to say that... but I’ve seen couples in my family stay together through devastating terminal illness. They would have been absolutely frowned upon by the family if they ditched.

[–]ReflexionSolutions 9 points10 points11 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Same for me, I would feel so bad leaving a partner. And especially as they are already going through a lot. But I always think, well I have no idea what would be the mental toll of such a situation on me, so who knows 🤷

[+]ShiningSeason -17 points-16 points-15 points 3 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Statistically, men are more likely to leave a sick partner.

[–]A-sop-D 11 points12 points13 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

[–]LokisDawn 7 points8 points9 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I've seen the same study. It was retracted due to a coding error. They counted people leaving the study as divorcees, lol.

I wasn’t really commenting on who left the other more, I was just saying it was scummy in general because the other comment seemed more permissive of it.

I’m aware of the statistics you’re referring to, and people have told me these studies were retracted. Still waiting for someone to show me they were retracted because I couldn’t find anything about that.

And then there is the virtue signalling that she is running the marathon to raise money for a cancer charity. BS - she is running a marathon because she wants to.

[–]TheHighGround99 19 points20 points21 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yeah it's wild nobody is calling her out for this. To cover her guilt she's running a marathon that doesn't really help cancer research at all, it's just a sham we put on because as a race we're helpless against cancer and want to feel like we're doing something. Cancer research doesn't need any more money. It's well funded, primarily because plenty of rich and powerful people either have or have loved ones with it, and are all in on finding a cure. The marathon runners are well intentioned but she's really just covering her guilt

[–]jadedlonewolf89 54 points55 points56 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Was dating this woman who started using bath salts we were fighting all the time managed to convince her to stop using, then I caught her popping molly like it was candy and snorting coke, she’d even managed to use my rent and bill money at one point. After about 6 months of this I had enough and broke it off.

She convinced our mutual friends and her family that she’d left me because I was a controlling abusive prick. I wound up cutting all the friends that defended her without knowing the full story out of my life with no explanation whatsoever because fuck those people.

[–]Doneyhew 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

If a man has a problem with you we will come up to you and talk about it, and if it’s bad enough we just have it out but that’s as bad as it’ll usually get. A scorned woman will wreak absolute havoc on a man’s life. They will turn people against and try to mess with your head and emotions. It’s pretty fucked up tbh

[–]girlbunny 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

When we first got together my husband told me that if I ever heard something about what he may or may not have done, to go to him and just ask.

He had multiple abusive relationships in the past, some where he was mentally abused, others where he was physically abused. One where his partner raped him, but he felt he couldn’t leave because they had a child together and he was trying to protect the child. A common thread in those relationships were lies told to others about things he had supposedly done, and people automatically believing those lies.

There were times when I asked him about things and he admitted that he had done it, but most times he gave a totally different side of the story. His story never changed, while the other people usually changed their stories.

Communication is key. If someone wasn’t friends enough to come to you to find out the truth, then were they really friends at all?

1/4 of Marriages with a Sick Spouse Will End in a Divorce

It’s disgusting to think people can leave their partner because of illness alone.

[–]South-Friend-7326 98 points99 points100 points 3 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

What’s the point of a marriage for a man in modern day society? I get there are tax advantages but is it really worth it?

Women want it to feel secure, usually they demand it before having children, but there is never any guarantees for the outcome for the man involved. Even more confusingly, women are also the primary instigators of divorce proceedings.

I really don’t understand the point of getting married for men in today’s society.

[–]weekend-guitarist 31 points32 points33 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

17 years of tax breaks went to hell in divorce settlement.

[–]Illunal 41 points42 points43 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

There is no point in marriage, for it is both a scam and a gamble; a person would be just as well off buying a gun and playing Russian roulette.

[–]lethrowaway4me 48 points49 points50 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Never sign a contract with a party incentivized in breaking it.

[–]Shy_starkitten 7 points8 points9 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Well, there is a point in getting married (at least for me) but people have abused it and ruined it. Plus I can see why a couple who's been living together for 5+ years and sleeping together wouldn't see the need to be married, as they are already living a married life together, it's just not official.

[+]Aromatic_Ad5473 -13 points-12 points-11 points 3 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Did you read the article?

“While men are much quicker to file for divorce from their ill wives, women are more inclined to stay with their husbands all the way until death.”

When illness isn’t a factor and women seek divorce - they’re not leaving happy marriages.

[–]South-Friend-7326 16 points17 points18 points 3 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

No I didn’t read the article since I wasn’t THAT interested.

But since you are, I’ll bite.

If I am understanding you correctly, you point out that women seek divorce when they are unhappy with their marriage. Okay, that makes sense, but then again, what’s the purpose of a marriage?

That’s the central theme here in this discussion. If people are quick to choose divorces when they are unhappy, then what’s the point of a marriage in the first place?

Is it supposed to make women feel secure? Is it supposed to act like a guarantee? Is it necessary as a foundation to raise children? Because it those are the reasons, then people shouldn’t take it lightly. Once married, because both parties agreed that this union is necessary, both parties should do their best to maintain the stability of a marriage.

What data shows is that women are the primary instigator of divorce proceedings, and if your reason (they’re not leaving happy marriages) is to be taken into account, then what does that say about there being less divorces instigated by men? Are men less likely to be in unhappy marriages? Or could it be that they don’t see divorce as a means to happiness? Maybe they don’t see divorces as a solution to an unhappy marriage?

I’ll leave you to interpret that.

[+]Aromatic_Ad5473 -13 points-12 points-11 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I didn’t read your comment since I wasn’t THAT interested

[–]EYEzEARz 5 points6 points7 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Include a large life insurance policy. Most women are not leaving that situation, men on the other hand for the most part are used to be in the breadwinners so they might take the option of leaving.

[–]DoctorStorm 21 points22 points23 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

A recent study (actual study), whereas the link above is to a law firm's website using outdated/skewed info.

According to the more recent study, there's nothing to see here - neither for men or women. It states that, if anything, given a 10 year longitudinal study and view, divorce actually decreases in likelihood.

Now, is the woman in the article crap? Yes. Are women going to tip the scales moving forward? I'd bet on it.

But is there data for this yet? Doesn't appear so.

1/4 of Marriages with a Sick Spouse Will End in a Divorce

I wonder how many of those are medical divorces, where a couple divorces for financial reasons but doesn't actually split up. Being treated for a life-threatening illness is ridiculously expensive in the US. And income caps on Medicaid incentivizes elderly couples to legally split so one partner qualifies for aid while the other holds the assets. I'm curious how much that type of divorce is inflating the numbers.

When my husband was diagnosed with cancer, we seriously discussed whether divorcing, with all our assets transferred to my name, would be prudent to protect our financial security. If it came to a medical bankruptcy situation, it would be better to only ruin one person's credit and have few assets available to be seized.

We decided against it in the end, but it was a little touch and go until we were sure that the highly rated hospital we wanted to use would be considered in network and that the majority of the (nearly $300k) medical bills would be covered by insurance.

[–]IceCorrect 15 points16 points17 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Feminist LOVE to bring those stats to show how evil men are, beacuse most of the time divorced person is women. I wonder how credible is stats that was done once and never repeated, especialy when you dont need special surveys to find answers.

As non american maybe its american thing that people divorce just to prevent debt from sick one been left on their SO. This question is based purly on meme I saw how sick husband divorced his wife for this reason, but in real life nothing changes

[–]angryearth1 points 3 years ago [recovered] (1 child) | Copy Link

Nah, I don't love this stuff. It's bad data being thrown around that might affect policies and funding and makes it look like NONE of us will ever concede a point or listen to men. Because the data is flawed and the research about men leaving their wives is wrong anyway.

[–]NotSoRichieRich 64 points65 points66 points 3 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

He didn't dodge the cancer bullet, but he dodged a second one not getting into a long-term commitment with her.

If it wasn't her using the cancer as an excuse to leave, it would've been something equally serious, like his hair going grey.

[–]South-Friend-7326 27 points28 points29 points 3 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link

Yeah, he did dodge a bullet, though that doesn’t make her act any less cruel. People support each other in relationships, and they also place enormous amount of trust in each other. To have someone abandon you when you’re in such a critical stage of your life is distasteful to say the least.

“…in sickness and in health, till death do us apart” is a common vow to make when getting married.

I wonder if things would turn out differently if they had been married.

I can relate…. I was diagnosed with lymphoma and had 13 tumours in me. It was a year of hell chemotherapy and all while covid hit too. My wonderful wife made it about her. How this is affecting her more and she even said to me. “If you die you don’t have to deal with it. I do so i have it worse.” She said this as i lay in a hospital bed hooked up to 4 machines a spinal infection and the flue.

The nurse asked her to leave and it it took a long time of discussion to get back together after that.

Who knows what she was living. She says she had panic attacks and talks about having to use lots of medication. Maybe if you're at that point it's better to get away.

The real problem is that she, and many others, haven't learned to deal with stress properly, so whenever something happens, they're left relying on meds and/or quitting instead staying strong and dealing with the situation.

Who knows what she was living. She says she had panic attacks and talks about having to use lots of medication. Maybe if you're at that point it's better to get away.

Or maybe she's lying and trying to look like she was justified in leaving someone who needed and relied on her.

I default to not believing people because people will constantly lie unless there is solid evidence that the person is being truthful.

So I believe that she left simply because she couldn't handle it and it was just easier to shirk your responsibilities and move on.

My verdict is she's a horrible person.

The real problem is that she, and many others, haven't learned to deal with stress properly, so whenever something happens, they're left relying on meds and/or quitting instead staying strong and dealing with the situation.

That's only a small part of the problem. Nowadays people want everything instantly. They aren't willing to take the needed time to properly get something done, or to care for another when it's just easier to break up with them and find someone else until they show a trait that isn't ideal. Then the person leaves again.

People are flakes in the age of social media and just about instant anything.

My verdict remains the same: She's a terrible person and a flake.

Sadly it happens so often that guys get bashed for leaving. But girls get like praised for leaveing as soon as a any setback happens.

I think that dynamic change makes it more likely that people often only stick together as long as its just easy to do so. As soon as it hits harder times the bail.

So yea have the dynamic that men more use girls when the hit on there great times. Cause the know as soon as the great times stop the girl will jump ship.

And its often not about love or wanting to build something up together anymore. But who can use the other before the other can fuck you over. Kinda transaction based relationships you see often. Sad become like this.

But to many people get fucked over or burned to not have that be the outcome. But sad

No, the study found that a marriage is more likely to end if the wife is sick, not that the man would leave the wife.

One mechanism could be that women don't like to give up control over housework. For example, it's quite a privilege to cook stuff you want to eat every day, even if it means you need to make a few extra serves. Maybe women would rather end a marriage than give up that privilege (if they no longer have the time to make extra serves?).

So you understand the downvotes ...

I keep seeing that retracted 2009 study that men leave their partners when they get sick quoted, golded, heavily upvoted on most of reddit.

Someone tried to reproduce the study a few years later and couldn't. it turns out the original study was propaganda "flawed". The study recorded any couple that separated or that stopped participating in the study as the husband leaving the wife. Wife died? Husband abandoned her. Focused on her care and stopped answering surveys? Husband abandoned her. Moved away and stopped getting the letters? Husband abandoned her. Wife filed for divorce? Husband abandoned her. The second team of researchers caught them.

I see some saying men would catch more flak. I’m not saying that’s false, but I haven’t necessarily noticed that. I know women are often the ones in caregiver roles so if I had to guess, it would be women that catch more flak, but it’s just a guess. Not sure.

Oh shit really? I had no idea. Do you think you could find me the retraction? I didn’t see retractions in the two studies I looked at. I’ll link them here

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/19645027/

https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/0022146515596354

I did read an article that gave it a little bit more nuance than “men drop the ball and leave.” It explained how men often view caregiving differently and that might make it look different. For example, they assume their wife has a decent amount of autonomy and that the wife will ask help if she needs it, yet the wife often feels like a burden and didn’t ask. That’s definitely some nuance I didn’t have before. I’ve been a caregiver many times and work in healthcare, and it is often a good idea to let them do as much as possible for themselves so they don’t feel infantilized or useless. I’ll link the article too, it contains those two other studies.

I've always been of the opinion that people judge other people too harshly for leaving their partner over medical conditions. Anyone who has had a partner with a severe medical condition knows how fucking hard it is, and these two weren't even married yet.

And to those who view this as the woman "making it about herself", yeah, don't you think a lot of cancer sufferers would run away from it if they could? Of course some of their partners aren't going to be able to handle it. The cancer sufferer themselves can only "handle it" because they have no other choice.

You are a shitty person if you leave someone when they really need support. But it might be easier to live with your guilt than to live with the trauma of going through that process with someone instead of leaving.

If a man supports his wife financially and emotionally as she's on palliative care for cancer, only half alive at that point, is he a monster if he finds a casual sexual/romantic relationship because he needs it to help him survive the situation with his wife? Conventional wisdom says yes. But the problem with conventional wisdom is that it's an ideal; it doesn't often account for the messiness of reality.

Everyone finds it easy to call out when someone else is being a piece of shit. But who among us hasn't been a piece of shit at some point? You think you can tell me no one you've known, at any point in your life, thought something you did was shitty and selfish? We don't all do it like this girl did, but we all do things that we should be ashamed of. None of us is a Saint.

If your first reaction to this kind of story is to understand both sides, instead of looking for fault, you would realize that the person "in the wrong" tends to be more relatable than we'd like to admit.

[–]ChaosOpen 16 points17 points18 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I don't think anyone's main problem is with her leaving him, I mean it is certainly a dick move and nothing you should be proud of, but in the end everyone has a breaking point. The problem is her going up on the news like some great hero and showing what a great person she is by running a single marathon in his honor. Sorry, but no, you don't get to be the hero of the story by virtue signaling. If she wanted to be a hero she could have stayed by his side, she chose not to be the hero, and pretending she is one makes what she did just that much worse.

This reminds me of a female pastor turned stripper and public stripper who later opened an OF.

About a year or two ago I learned of her - one of those stories that you find on your newsfeed. I quickly read on her backstory because I had a good feeling on where her story was going. It was clear, to me at least, that she craved attention - being on stage with people looking at her. This was before she showed skin for money. She was also bisexual and married with kids.

She and her husband would later then get a divorce. Upon first glance one would think the husband wanted out of the marriage, but it turned out it was the wife that opted for divorce even when the husband accepted that she was bisexual and went as far as tolerating that she opened up an OF and starting stripping; she felt it wasn't enough - she felt that the marriage was oppressing her.

The woman has a whole site dedicated to herself, if that's any proof of her narcissism.

Just a couple of days ago a co-worker of mine started talking about a podcast he listens to. The podcast focused on male and female relationships, cracking jokes about their body counts. Among the guests was none other than the pastor turned stripper/OF. She admitted that she divorced her husband because she didn't want to be in a monogamous relationship.

Where did it go sideways? If I recall correctly, I remember reading on her site that she suffered from comorbidity, though not sure which DSM was listed. Go figure.
