I remember taking a history class in college on modern Germany. We had to watch a Nazi propaganda film called Triumph of the Will. If feminists were to make a propaganda film in a similar vein, the Barbie movie would be that film.

Leaving early was a mistake, immfho, and i haven’t understood the blow-back on this film . . .

Ze film directly addresses the disposability of men and shows the consequences to not giving venue for marginalized voices.

The women live in a fantasy land, only made possible by the dreams of girls and/or women, one which perhaps develops from their same feelings (rather real or misguided) of being presently disenfranchised in the Real World; when Barbie faces reality, the situation seems dark, not ideal for anyone.

The film literally ends by asking the question: what if we worked together and combined our various strengths / weaknesses?

It was pointed out to me that the film shows women 2nd guessing themselves and feeling inadequate; hen pecking. Ruling men with the same ham-fisted totalitarianism that modern post-post-feminism purports to combat presently, is a failure.

Their fantasy quickly falls apart and has led to calamity: only in a fantasy world can the women be boss ass bitches without consequence or suffering, for a time, and even that reverses when the men revolt. (Read: no taxation without representation)

I’d criticize that the film exonerates the women for their abuses in Barbie Land simply because they had not realized the collateral damage of their make-believe world. The implication being they need to “look in the mirror” and take responsibility for their own situation, and incorporate men, who are homeless and disenfranchised, to find higher purpose/happiness. (Conversely, reason would beg: men - - or really, everyone - - might benefit to do the same here, in the real world)

We’re in this together; and the microcosm of the Barbie World reflects the circular history of our society and that ever-swAnging pendulum.

Getting triggered by the setup and not staying for the payoff was childish and im contending that we’ll be better served to make bonafide efforts to acknowledge our (men’s) culpability in the system, as a community, and therefore hold women, and the fantasy arm that is feminism, to the same standard.

In conclusion, you’re not being victimized by this film, it’s asking every person to consider the other side of the coin, wear their shoes for a day, and not make the same mistakes that were handed down to us by a perhaps somewhat less open-minded society.

If you ask a lot of feminist - they act like men treated women like this in the 90's and 00's. They also casually forget about fat men and how plumbers, for example, were represented. Somehow jokes like that are things they entirely forgot about.

See the problem I truly have here isn't the cheap jokes. It's that you're only socially allowed to have certain cheap jokes. The people who claim to be all about equality seem to actively be about everything except that.

As an example, and I like to use race because it's easier for people to get away from men's rights / feminism arguments: Black and white people. Most mass shooters are white. Most gang thugs are black. Go into r/news and watch how they talk about each group. They almost defend the gangs and casually ignore the race. But when it's a mass shooting they practically can't contain themselves from pointing out race. When the mass shooter was non-white notice how it was barely mentioned by anyone or in titles. In fact the mentioning of it barely happened at all because it didn't align with the politics of what they wanted to appear. You can talk about one and they will almost proudly be a part of it... but once you talk about another.. you're a bad person.

The same thing happens here. You can make fun of men and they are supposed to just take it. You're not supposed to make fun of women because that's sexist.

The wild thing here is feminism supports this because they can't think that logic through. The implication is men can handle that level of criticism (and here's the quiet part) but women can't.

When r/news, and others, get men defensive they mock them for being incels or snowflakes or whatever hurtful words they like to throw out with malicious intent. When women get defensive... you're just being a men person to the poor (intellectually) defenseless woman.

How women (feminist predominantly) don't see this as insulting is because, and I'm speculating here and I'm being bitchy at the moment - I've been in quite a mood (ranging from depression to anger for seemingly no reason) the past month, they simply want to hate on men at all cost. Cutting off their nose to spite their face. In my personal experiences - this speaks to trauma more than anything else. And I've said this here before - when your trauma becomes your personality bad things come out of it and it's extremely difficult to climb out of this pit.

We see this in men too. Your wife takes everything from you with divorce, sabotages all your relationships, gets your fired due to lies... and you will often find a very bitter man who wants nothing to do with women ever again: MGTOW.

Except men are expected to handle it better than woman, accordingly to society as a whole. As we've seen in the comments here: Walk away / Let it go / Move on.

What happens when women are told this? I'll give you three guesses how 2X would respond to such comments.

My core issue with most everything here is how everything is openly hypocritical. When you point it out - they almost never respond and just quit the conversation. We see this in right-wing interviews when they use the same tactics and word choices as left-wingers - though I'll be the first to say practically all interviews, left and right, are just ... stupid. About 20% of what they say is useful, 70% is just mean spirited, and 10% is just pushing ideology.

I'm annoyed because I feel like there is actually a good movie in there somewhere before it went to shit. The ads made it look like an Austin Powers Brady Bunch Movie type of comedy that my kids and I would have enjoyed. The first half started out that way til it got all emo and political. I am against the woke agenda and modern feminism stuff but that being in the movie didn't trigger me or anything. What did annoy me was that dumb speech America Fererra had to give all the barbies over and over again and the super emotional 20 minute ending that we had to endure. I didn't walk out early but at least 10 other people did. Great cast and some funny one liners, but totally missed opportunity of what could have been a very forever classic comedy.

Gents. I don’t think this sub is understanding the point of this movie. So many comments are about how Barbieworld started and ended as a matriarchy, and how unequal that is for men. Barbieworld represents a mirror image of our real world, which as highlighted in the movie, is a patriarchy.

If men are upset at Barbieworld’s inequality, I believe that was a point of the movie, to demonstrate how some women feel in the real world. I actually thought the movie did a good job showing me that other perspective. Ken’s enjoyment in the real world, highlights our patriarchal elements.

Disclaimer: Yes, the real world has many elements unfair against the average man. It’s when we look at people in elevated positions in the real world (doctors, CEOs, somewhat wealthy people, etc) that show a male tendency.

To me, it felt like they were subliminally showing men in a positive light and the "barbies" in a negative one, especially the part where the Kens still seemed to love and care their "barbies" even after being the top dogs (unlike how the "barbies" were when they had power) but they decided to instead "cheat" on the Kens(the beach senerading scene) with the sinister agenda of making them fight against each other so that they can take back the power for themselves.

Also, in the whole entire movie, it felt like only Ken had a meaningful character development arc.

I really enjoyed the movie. I think Ken will bring more men to the Manoverse than J Peterson ever could. I think it’s interesting that someone who didn’t even finish the movie would complain about not getting it lol. You have to have the full context before you begin the argument or you make yourself look foolish.

In no way was this a “man bad, woman good” movie. Barbie land was the exact same as the real world except the gender rolls were reversed. The men were not the bad guy and the women weren’t either, it was a social commentary that both woman and men have problems and the only way to solve those problems is to acknowledge they exist.

Spoiler for you: At the end Ken discovers he doesn’t need Barbie to be important and to be a man. No more Cucking for Barbie and no more thinking he had to be with her just because that was what was expected of him. Aren’t these the lessons that we are trying to teach young men. The movie has at least 2 layers and it was made for 2 genders. It’s genius (although I personally didn’t enjoy the transsexual shoehorned in like I wouldn’t notice)

And a movie doesn’t have to be roaringly funny to successfully convey a message.

I saw it twice. It's high-la-rious. I find it disingenuous to say no one laughed, especially when Ken pulled out his three watches after the 'real' woman asked him the time. Or when Ken said, 'i can play my guitar AT you.' My wife looked at me and I was laughing because that's literally me. It’s a gorgeous movie, made me think of a classic art house film like holy mountain. The resolutions at the end are really good, they give Ken an identity of his own outside of Barbie (who they are very clear isn’t a woman, but an idea) and ultimately I think it’s pretty critical of everyone in modern society not just men. It’s a pretty deep movie if you pay attention, complex with shades of darkness. It’s not men vs women, it’s about existentialism and the human condition.

I saw it with my gf and my sister, and none of us felt like there was a strong message in that movie, one way or the other. We didn't get a man-bad-woman-good vibe from this movie at all, nor an earth shattering revelation about gender roles or what it means to be a man or a woman in today's society, or whatever. I don't really get what all the commotion around this movie is about. Maybe it's because we're not at all bothered by stereotype-jokes about our genders.

I did like it though. The story was ok at best, but there were some very funny moments. But visually it was really good, the world-building of Barbieland with the costumes and everything, and the cinematography made it an enjoyable movie in my opinion.

Can't hold a candle to Oppenheimer though. If you have time/money to go see only one of the two, go see Oppenheimer. If you have time/money to see both, spend it on seeing Oppenheimer on IMAX, or just go see it twice.

All the parts with Gosling were funny. All of them. He putting on two sunglasses in a dramatic moment is so stupid that I was on the floor laughing.

The answer why most women fail at comedy is because they're not allowed to be degraded. It's controlled by the director or comedienne that we can laugh with, but never against. But with such rules in place, there's no tension or uncertainty. Tension is crucial to provoke laughter. They can of course put the brunt of the mean jokes on men, but then A. We already know they will B. That makes him the star and her, a waste of space, so ultimately the same result. It's a predictable, regulated, and jumbled mess then. It gets no laughs.

I've seen painfully few female comedians actually understand this, and that are also willing to degrade their characters like... every successful male comedian has done before them. I'd like to mention Derry Girls on Netflix as a positive counterexample. It takes the petulant selfishness of teenagers to brave new lows. I recommend it. It's real funny.

Unfortunately, I think it's a fluke and that comedy genuinely is dead. Men aren't allowed to make irreverent comedies anymore(too triggering!), and women are most of the time too pretentious and demanding of respect to go where comedy actually requires..

This is an larger issue. They really are killing culture and entertainment with their moralism, aren't they?

And I'm not their intended audience. In fact, I doubt anyone in this sub is their intended audience. Art is inherently subjective - and we are simply not the subjects this art is intended for.

There are things I would change or could criticize - for example they could have told an even more compelling story by making the Ken's far more competent than they did - but then again they could make damsels in distress far more competent than they do in action flicks targeted towards men and they don't. *shrugs* People like different things - so this sort of thing is what I expect.

But like... I don't expect to enjoy the Hannah Montana movie. I don't expect to find Brokback Mountain particularly interesting for me. I can appreciate the technical aspects of their creation, especially in relation to their intended audiences, but why would I expect to ENJOY THEM when they weren't written FOR ME?

I’m as much a misogynist as the next guy but I watched the movie with the wife and daughter and I loved it. Not saying that I agree with the entire message that it’s conveying, but it’s a very well thought out and put together film. They put a ton of effort into it, and it’s not just a little kids movie.

Literally bro I advocate for the reversal of women’s rights half the time and I liked the movie. It’s not bad.

I knew someone who was going to see the film. A mother of a couple young kids who went with her friends. I told her I hadn’t seen it, but been told the gender role reversal changed the film for another one of my friends.

She saw me the next day and told how it changed the film completely for her. The jokes weren’t funny to begin with, but thinking about how if the genders were the opposite way changed it completely.

It’s like the film was made to piss people off so others wouldn’t go see it.

It's Barbie, as much as they think they're pushing a "good message to women", it's still just Barbie, it was cute and silly and made sense for a movie about Barbie. It only did so well because humanity will never know how to move away from idolizing successful blonde light-skinned women.

Many Movies now are crap because of not-so-subtle pandering, catering to the smallest but loudest groups and sjw stuff. Pretty sad. And don't forget if you dont like their films you're (insert blanket term that's bad here)

I haven't seen it, and will probably when it rolls out on streaming sites, but like I'm super confused about how I hear it's doing so well. Every chain has some barbie themed thing. Burger joints, bubble tea joints. Who's bank rolling this shit?

That being said i actually liked the Ken coco mango drink at cha time.

SW it as well. It's both bad but not as bad as some people make it out to be.

There is definitely misandry but also some misogyny as well but the misogyny is more of a joke and misandry seems preachy.

Mainly the movie seems to think the men hold all the power in the world and none of them did anything to get it or earn it. They downplay how hard it is to be a man and assume that everything is just handed to them. That by virtue of being a man you can wake up tomorrow a surgeon, president, or CEO because you feel like it.

The movie also assumes that men are just incompetent of thought and only see women as "objects" and all women have to do is give men some attention and they'll all turn on each other. This is true for some guys but also for girls.

There's a scene where a mom was ranting about how hard it was to be a woman. She listed a dozen things about how it all contradicted each other and I sat there thinking, "I'm a man and I feel the exact fking way." I never once assumed that only men feel this way, though.

It's things we ALL go through, men and women. So in a way Barbie sort of plays the victim as if all their struggles are somehow unique.

Weird movie. 5/10 for me.

I agree that it was simply stupid. There was no story. There was no plot. It was just a sequence of cobbled together memes that pretend to be insightful and witty. It is not funny...just dumb. Stupid is NOT the same as humorous, Hollywood.

Fine, do a feminist Barbie movie if you want. But do it well! Write it so there is an actual story. Make jokes with setup and payoff.

Yet one more flick that relies soley on the fact that it is based on an established, recognized IP. If this were about just some doll that nobody ever heard of, what would people say. It would get universally trashed!
