I agree with the first point. If the guy has reason to doubt, he can quietly get a paternity test. Why should I pay for it as a taxpayer?

If the man is not the father he has no more responsibility to raise the child than anyone else. If a child needs a father, effort should be made to find the real father, not saddle an unrelated man with the burden just because he hooked up with the mom.

I don't have much sympathy for a new mom that lied and tried to con a man out of 18+ years of his life, but domestic violence is already illegal, so if it happens it can be dealt with by the courts.

The only reasonable argument against mandatory tests in your post is the first one, but I'm really not sure how costly these tests are to start with.

If there's paternity fraud or even just paternity confusion (i.e. a woman isn't sure herself), it's best for everyone to clear it up as soon as possible. So a kid would have a chance to meet their biological father and the other man could make informed decision.

2) Isn't a cogent argument. You're assuming the biological father wouldn't be a good father if he knew he had a child and that some man at random, chosen by the woman would be a better father. None of that is certain.

3) DV is already a crime. It's better to detect paternity fraud earlier than later.

Honestly what is missing is criminalizing paternity fraud. What's missing is requiring reimbursement for paternity fraud.

It's an incredibly cheap easy test. Hospitals run and keep track of millions of tests every year. One more is inconsequential.
Tell that to the chump paying 18+ years for someone else's kid. In what universe is it OK to saddle an innocent party with another person's debt.

Tax payers pay for every kid one way or another. To there would be no logistical problem. Just take your time and swab the kids mouth. Paternity testing isn't perfect. Even if it isn't mandatory, there can be inaccuracies. Non of these is a reason to not do it.

A child should have their biological father and he should be taking responsibility. If we're gonna argue that it's best for the child to have a guy who isn't the father provide for them, then why don't we make Jeff Bezos or Elon Musk be the father. The child would be much better off at least getting child support from the richest men on Earth.

The possibility of tearing apart a family is the fault of the mother. She's the one who cheated if they were married. Also, if the man finds out he's not the father, he's not going home with that woman. Even the small chance of DV doesn't justify keeping the truth from the child or the man.

The child has the right to know who their real biological father is.

DNA tests are relatively cheap. Aside form taxpayers not wanting to pay for another families issues. And it's not the only thing that matters. There's a reason women don't want to be mothers anymore; they don't want to be providers. Why should a man have to be a provider for another mans child? How many women would raise another womans baby, made by her husband? Whether men are violent or not, women can still be lairs. That can tear a family apart also. Women demand men be more virtuous than themselves, and have no intention of compensating in any way.

and the 3rd point while it sucks bad actions do indeed have consequences, the same way I believe rapists and theifs should face said fines and jail women should face the consequences of cheating.

Arguments two and three are not good arguments and could be used against private ones, which I would argue should be allowed. The most important reason is this: it is not your government's business to say you shouldn't trust someone, to say that a group of people with a protected characteristic is likely to be lying and to force you to take steps against that group to display your/their mistrust.

I took a paternity test and it was only about $100 and it's 99.9999% accurate. It's a small price to pay for piece of mind.

I think you are taking for granted that fraud took place and then looking at wether it would be better to reveal that fraud or not.

Maybe you're right, maybe you're wrong...but it doesn't really matter because it would be better to prevent the fraud in the first place which is what a mandatory test would really be about.

It would make it so a lot of women wouldn't even bother trying to lie in the first place and would be marginally more careful about who they sleep with and that would save more tax-payer money than the paternity tests would cost.

It’s funny how it’s always women who argue against uncovering paternity fraud.

Testing isn’t just about paternity fraud however. There have been children who have suffered through heredity diseases unnecessarily because it was assumed they couldn’t possibly have the disease they had.

Some companies offer paternity testing for under $100, a drop in the bucket compared to many other pregnancy and birth related costs.

Do tax payers normally pay for DNA test or any other procedure other people go through at a hospital . I pay $500 in medical insurance and get a bill everytime I go to the hospital

1.Your politicians already spend your tax money like they want. Politicians are being paid by corporations, and average Joe and Susan have zero influence here. So, a problem here is not a new line in the big list where your tax money goes, but fucked up political system.

Everybody knows that in the US you have crazy expensive medicine. You pay a lot of medical insurance money. So, another 100 bucks or so, it's nothing.

2-3. Looks. Kids when become adults often inherit their parents' looks. Siblings looks similar too. The truth may open up. In this case, when kids are adults, there's a risk of murder, not just DV. Also, cheaters cheat, a woman who cheated once will cheat again with bigger chance, than a woman who have never cheated. When a cheater gets caught, a man is going to question everything, especially if kids don't look like him.

Idk about what family you are talking about. Building a family is like building a house you need a good foundation, and paternity fraud isn't it.

Women are not that stupid, they would be much more careful while cheating, if paternity test was mandatory.

I don't have much empathy for men who raise other men's children. They should think with their brains, not balls. But, I don't think that shitting on men is a good strategy in the long run. It makes society weak.

Politicians have a vested interest in avoiding mandatory paternity tests; consider the shitstorm which followed Thomas Jefferson's black progeny when they spoke up.

DNA is already done, that cat is out of the bag. The Human Genome has been solving crimes for a decade now, there is no reason to avoid the technology which also diagnoses health problems. Deadbeat fathers cost taxpayers millions every year, lets go after the real parents of children and collect.

I think it’d be fine to offer free tests, though maybe not mandatory, with the understanding that the tests would also be stored and run against the government’s DNA crime database.

Why should murder or rape cases go unsolved due to unidentified DNA if the taxpayers are paying for a program that could address this problem? It’d solve two problems at once — paternity fraud and make crime solving easier.

Also we would eventually hit a point where there is enough DNA on file that every persons paternity could be determined, and then have the right men be properly identified as the father, meaning every kid would still have a father, and that person could be made to support their biological child.

Here in the USA, we already routinely screen neonates for genetic problems, like phenylketonuria, galactosemia, sickle cell disease, cystic fibrosis, etc. This is referred to as “Recommended Uniform Screening Panel” (RUSP). Why not take it just one step further and test for paternity?

Mothers are already guaranteed biological parenthood, as any baby that comes out of a woman is automatically known to be her biological offspring—with some fringe exceptions, like surrogate pregnancy. I don’t think it’s radical to think that men deserve the same guarantee of biological parenthood, especially if that man is expected to financially provide for the child for 18 years.

In my opinion, paternity tests should be opt-out. They should be a guaranteed right to any man, but if a man is foolish enough to relinquish his right to a paternity test, he should be able to. But the woman should have zero say over the matter, just like how men should have zero say over whether a woman gets an abortion.

Reason #1 is irrelevant. There are infinitely more costly things that the government wastes money on, the cost would be minuscule in the grand scheme of things.

Reason #2 is precisely why mandatory paternity tests do not (and will never) exist. It is preferable (from the government's standpoint) to have a father unknowingly support a child that isn't his, than for the government to support it.

I'd argue reason #2 is complete and utter bullshit to anyone that has any semblance of a moral compass and has any sort of respect for the concept of consent.
