I recently saw a comedy show on TV where a woman and a man were reading out creepy Tinder conversations. After a while the guy said something like "this is horrible, these conversations show men in such a bad light".
Welcome to reality, my dear. You couldn't stand reading this for 10 minutes and women are confronted with this every day. We didn't invent unsolicited dick pics in order to make men look bad. They already manage to make themselves look bad pretty well.

Likewise, and notice how they portray her as the "boring unfunny unattractive jealous" girl when she's actually reacting in a normal way to a weird unrealistic interaction. This is the sort of thing that creates pick-mes. It portrays the "hot girl" as being overly sexualised and the "unattractive girl" (the way she's portrayed/dressed, not is) as being "no fun," too sensible etc etc. And ofc at the end the male character gives her his sarcastic "approval."

Putting into words what I’ve never realized. Shit really does not benefit girls and women at all. I’m watching supernatural forge first time and I get super mad at all the male gaze scenes that happen, I’ve been fast forwarding most of the show to the end of the episodes to skip it. But that show has been around for like...16 years? That’s half of my life that I’ve been learning ‘how to be a woman’ from tv in general. Someone mentioned this on a Tiktok I saw. It’s basically how we love the characters like Mr. Darcy, Mr. Knightly, Colonel Brandon, Duke of Hastings, etc etc all that. It’s because they’re written by women who understand what women want and need from a partner. Sharpay was my favorite and I never understood what she actually did that would make her deserve to be painted by the writers as a villain. As a character she was by far the most vibrant and talented when it came to singing and acting and what’s more was 100% dedicated to being in the musical as opposed to the female lead who was more into science class. Sharpay deserved to win everything because she tried the hardest, yet the female lead won instead because she was more “likeable” (toned down, approachable, appropriate). Sharpay performed her femininity at an extreme level that made others envy and despise her and in my mind that was a subconscious dig at strong women.

Woman and girls who are strong and determined, who know what they want and unabashedly try to get it, who put themselves and their ambitions first, are not the kind of women and girls they want to see grow up in the world. Better to have them doubt themselves, be unsure and apologetic, and wait for someone else to tell them who to be or what they should want. Better to have girls grow up to be women who feel guilty about not choosing what other people are expecting them to choose.

This. I read a lot of high fantasy and epic fantasy novels, and since most of them are written by male authors it is hard to find relatable, healthy female characters. The ones that I do come across are so thoroughly pornified by the fans that I feel weird even mentioning them after a while. There was this one particular powerful, smart queen in a series that I loveddd, even more so because she shows zero romantic interest and is all about fighting the good fight. Except, the scrotes started making "thicc" refs about her, very inappropriate fanart and idk in general all discussions about her are weird dom type situations. It's so disgusting!

I just explained the Bechdel test to my friend last night, after discussing lord of the rings. It’s so sad how many popular movies fail the test, because female characters are accessories in those stories. Of course they’re unlikeable, very few are fully fleshed out characters.

In some cases I feel it's just better if they don't try. LoTR (books) were all male characters. They didn't even try to give a woman a story aside from mentioning her as a love interest. I honestly prefer this to when they try to add women characters and do it poorly. I'd rather they just didn't try.

I feel the same. I disliked what they did with the women in the movies though. I love LOTR, both the books and movies, but I have always been aware that the books are sexist, completely male driven and are a perfect example of women and femininity being all-out ignored in literature. So when the movies delved way too far into the backstories of the only female characters (excluding the elf queen who read almost entirely masculine) and completely failed to provide an example of either of those women being strong or unique or doing anything besides acting like men or serving men in some way— both as a way to get with a man— and instead drove the one-dimensional stereotypes even further (especially Éowyn’s efforts to avoid of being trapped in a metaphorical cage being completely overruled by her unrequited love with the male lead and subsequent hookup with another male) I was seriously disappointed.

The Eowyn thing totally reads like that in the books though.
I remember being seriously pissed off that he took a lovely character like Eowyn, lovely character like Faramir, and the lovely concept of them together (and Eowyn’s crush/hero-worship of Aragorn finally taking a chill pill) and just really awkwardly tied up ends Dickens style.

At least Tolkien appeared to be a HVM for his time (fought bravely in WW1, loved his wife Edith with all his heart until the day she died). The Silmarillion has some great strong female characters and the men in LOTR are all HVM that display courage, compassion, love, loyalty, honor and dignity.
I actually love Eowyn and Faramir's love story, partly because it's refreshing to see the man portrayed as the sensitive poetic soul while the woman is the one who is stoic and aloof. Also, Eowyn says she will "no longer take joy only in the songs of slaying" which I always read as her choosing to become both a warrior and a healer. Her reasons for riding into battle were mostly borne of unhealthy reasons - out of suicidal despair from the constraints put upon her. Faramir offers her a life of love, autonomy and freedom - there is still work to be done cleansing the world - she won't spend her days as a princess in an ivory tower. This was my personal read however, and I do recognize the criticisms surrounding this particular plotline.
I am aware of the problematic aspects of Tolkien's work, but I adore his LOTR for their non-toxic portrayal of masculinity. The Silmarillion imo is an even more mature work that also shows Tolkiens' understanding of unhealthy relationships and problematic male behavior (one character is forced/coerced into marriage and this is portrayed as creepy as fuck, while another gross male lusts after his cousin and the narrative overtly portrays him as the creepy incel he is).

I have a lifelong love affair with fantasy and scifi books. Just my take from the thousands of books I have read, in its heyday ( 40's to 70's) the main fanbase was teen boys. The biggest crossover fanbase was comic book readers which was also teen boy fanbase. A LOT of these books catered to socially awkward misfit teen boys and it shows. There is literally no other reason for the misogyny and blatant sexualization of female characters, it was all to appeal to middle class young boys since that is where the money came from. They created a demand by catering to fragile male egos. This was a time when religion and tv was setting ridiculous standards for male and female behaviors and there was an ever present media narrative of world destruction and widespread war. People lived in fear and uncertainty, and that ALWAYS drives a demand for escapist fantasy.

Pretty much all the shows I watched as a young teen were trash.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer, despite it having a bunch of female lead characters, was also incredibly problematic. The show basically spawned Twilight as fanfiction, and I also thought that age gap relationships were "romantic" because of Buffy/Angel.
Of course it has come out recently that Joss Whedon is disgusting. Not even surprised.

One dimensional characters are my biggest issue. This is why I adore Hermione. I never really understood my problem with the girls on sitcoms and soap operas growing up but there was always this nagging feeling of anger towards their behavior. You are made to “like” one character and “dislike” another but you might really identify with the characteristics of a character when their choices end up being stupid and boring and then you just end up feeling sad and annoyed.
The girl with amazing style and plenty of dates treats everyone around her like crap, and doesn’t seem to want to change. The smart girl with good grades has terrible hair, fails to attract the attention of any love interests and probably dies alone and single, but doesn’t seem to care. It definitely seems like that’s how men see young women. It also seems like that’s how they want everyone to see young women.
Something I noticed and liked. On one of the final episodes of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina there is a postmodern examination of the original Sabrina sitcom. At one point Sabrina’s “BFF” character, who defies stereotypes by being a smart, nerdy feminist who is also dating the male lead, laments that if she were in the original show the writers would never give her a boyfriend. They hit the nail on the head.

David Mamet always created a female character in nearly every play and film who "deserved" to be punched. Characters in women's romance novels usually. Shoujo and BL manga/anime as well.They also detest "prettyboy" characters that young women gravitate towards.
Don't get me wrong, Edward Cullen was a scrote, but there was a legit cultural MOVEMENT for a generation of men dedicated to hating him. It was never for how he treated Bella or the scrotey shit he did, either. It was because he was pretty-faced and sparkled.
I wish women were just as vocal about how much we disliked awful female characters that men create.
