I really disagree with this. I understand having women's only or men's only gyms because they can specifically cater to one gender but at a unisex gym this shouldn't be allowed.

It's not legal unless equal hours exists for men. Note that the "men's only hours" if they exist must be equal to the womens only hours, not from a quantifiable perspective, but in quality. Meaning that if the womens only hours are in the gym prime time, the mens only cannot be in the middle of the night or early morning, but must be placed in prime gym time as well.

If it was a private gym, I would be in full support of this. Private companies can discriminate based on gender. But as a man at the university, you can't opt out of the included gym package and other on campus amenities. You are forced to support a gym that bars you for 2 hours each day.

Idea:

Take a photo of the sign.

Give it to your graphic design friend.

Make it read, "No women allowed 5-7 monday through friday, mens hour".

Go to a printing space that usually has very reasonable rates.

Print the sign, and a smaller one, saying, "gym closed due to sexism, title IX office for more information. "

Leave both around the front entrance of the gym, and drink tea, because I do not want to suggest any vandalism.

So there's 2 hours M-F and 2 hours for lab swim T-Th that is women only.

The gym proper is open 118 hours a week and the lap swim pool 77 hours a week.

10/118=8.47%

Since men are getting 8.47% fewer gym hours they should be paying 8.47% less, or women pay 9.25% more(=1/(1-.0847)). That or get rid of women only hours or split/alternate men/women hours during the most convenient/useful times.

I do hope this doesn't get downvoted.... but OP needs to explain the difference between SRC 137 and SRC 136. Are they two sections of the same building? Two separate facilities?

Based on the UOregon document and this description of the facilities it really looks like this is a non-issue. What they did is set one fitness room (out of two cardio rooms and 7 total fitness spaces) as women-only for two hours a day. Men can still work out in any of the other 6 spaces (which include SRC 136, SRC 140 and SRC 193 for free weights and SRC 136, SRC 200, SRC 280 and SRC 295 for cardio). These all appear to be in the same building and I would suspect that these areas become de facto "men spaces" while the women congregate in their one "women only" space.

EDIT: Yeah, pretty much confirmed what I said above. Here's a map of the facility--I don't see where SRC 136 is on this map (likely hasn't been updated yet to include it) but it looks like one small section of the entire complex is reserved for women, not the "brand new gym" as the OP stated.

3-5pm are often prime times to use the gym. While it's not the case for everyone, I constantly found myself getting out of class no later than 4 (with maybe one or two exceptions). I was a science student, and this is even taking lab classes into consideration.

It's also right before the well established "dinner hour", a prime time to work out

I'm sorry - if they want special treatment, then they have to get it some other way. Doing it to inconvenience 40% of the school population is ridiculous because it's a huge number of people being displaced (that's right - male privilege makes us the minority sex in US colleges and universities). They can either have their gym at a time when it's less congested at the gym, or they can have their time alongside everyone else.

I was refused access to my campus's climbing gym for the same reason. For a while they had two-dollar Tuesday, which became two-dollar Thursday when women's climb was moved to Tuesday. I was pretty busy during that time and it was my only day to get climbing, I had been looking forward to it for a while. Needless to say I was bummed out. It further bugged me because ideas like this are put into policy in order to make a "safe, comfortable" environment for women who don't feel comfortable around men. Some of the men who climb often are quite muscular and it can be nerve-wracking to flop around on the wall around these dudes with loads of climbing prowess. I say this from first hand experience as a mediocre climber. The first many times, and even later times when really talented climbers were around, I would be very nervous on the wall, performance anxiety kinda. Fun fact, I have a penis and because of that my discomfort is ignored. When is scrawny-man hour? When is sweaty palm, look-at-feet hour? As if. As a person with a penis, I am expected to just buck up and climb around anyone else that wants to climb. My discomfort is something I am forced to get over if I want the spoils of using the rock gym. Frankly, it's made me less socially awkward and more confident in myself to have to flop around in front of the semi-pros, who are usually super nice about giving advice and encouragement. Instead of expecting that women (in the crusade for equality) sit on the mats next to or climb in the same room as a male, and overcome their anxieties/discomforts in a supportive environment, we expect them to only ever be comfortable around like-genitalled people on Tuesdays.

if someone comes up to you and tells you you have to leave, you ask them if they're a member. they'll look at you oddly, you can explain that you pay tuition the same as everyone else, and you have a right to the gym like everyone else. you have the right to an unfettered workout and you feel you're beginning to be harrassed because of your sex and gender, and that they're breaking the law by asking you to do anything at all, let alone LEAVE the gym because it's girls time.

if anyone goes further with it to fight you on it, they're automatically going to lose.

Reason SUPPORTING women's only

Women who wear hijabs for religious purposes are allowed to take them off when men aren't around (which is obviously way better and safer for an effective workout)

My understanding is that this equity move (equity not equality - google it) which protects a religious woman's first amendment right to freedom of religion in the capacity that she should have access to the same gym that everyone else has without being forced into wearing her Hijab -

ofcourse this only applies if it's a government funded school and could be different if you run a private gym

Concerning a public university It would be an injustice to a religious woman's first amendment rights (the same rights that let people say whatever the fuck they want on the reddit) if the only way they were able to use the gym they pay for was if they wearing their restrictive and unsafe head scarf which they would otherwise be able to take off among their own gender

the other women are allowed to train with these special religious cases because it isn't obstructing anyones first amendment rights

I don't know if this will make people more or less butt hurt but you can atleast sleep better knowing that this was for freedom or whatever you americans (think) you are always striving for
