I had the loveliest conversation with a man at the gym the other day. After he spent a few days repeatedly trying to position himself in my line of sight, (despite my efforts to avoid his gaze every time), he decided to go in for the approach.

He introduces himself, asks me some personal questions. I tell him that I’m not interested in conversing, and proceed with my workout. This didn’t seem to please him very much, and he stood there for a second before asking if I’m married or in a relationship. Again, I tell him that I’m NOT INTERESTED. This time without looking in his direction. He then smirks and says that I “must be scared of guys with big muscles” as he turns to walk away.

Now at this point, I’m feeling pretty agitated. Usually I would’ve just been grateful that the interaction was over. But hearing him tell me that I must’ve been “scared” of him, lit a fire inside. So I stood up, looked him square in the eye, and said “ Well since you must know, it’s not the muscles, it’s your height. You’re way too short.” I swear I could see his eyes go completely black for second there. He sputtered, gave me a look of disgust and shot back that I was one of those girls who are “stuck-up”. I let him have the last word and he finally walked away.

I saw him leave the gym not long after. I don’t think he necessarily left because of what I said, but he sure didn’t even try to look in my direction again. Moral of the story, guys like him think that it’s perfectly OK for them to approach women based on appearances. But us females aren’t allowed to have our own opinions on their looks.

That was my little rant for the day. If anyone has a similar story, I’d love to read it. You ladies really help keep me sane.

Edit: I did not tell management about the situation when it happened. I just brushed the whole thing off, and continued my routine. This happened at LA fitness so it’s the typical corporate gym environment. But if he tries to talk to me again, I’ll make sure to let a staff member know. Thank you all for your responses and support!
