this is so real!! I've been realizing this recently too. when I look at the real life women around me, they're nothing like female characters in media.

also, isn't it funny that male characters written by women are more likable than real men whereas female characters written by men are less likable than real women? lol

It was because of this I used to have the "I'm not like other girls" mentality

I've realized that I AM just like other girls, but all the presentations of feminity I saw growing up were created by men

Yup. The entire premise of Meg (teenaged daughter) from Family Guy being the scapegoat and target for constant abuse was because the cast didn't know how to write for a teenaged girl. I used to watch that show when I was younger. It's trash.

Someone mentioned this on a Tiktok I saw. It’s basically how we love the characters like Mr. Darcy, Mr. Knightly, Colonel Brandon, Duke of Hastings, etc etc all that. It’s because they’re written by women who understand what women want and need from a partner. And how our ideal partner is basically.... not men rn lol like, we need men to start acting like they’re written by women.

This is extremely important to remember and to bring to the attention of younger women in your life.

The cultural misogynistic conditioning is so strong.

Also why we need more women to be producers, directors, writers etc, or as an extension basically more women in the public sphere.

And the characters you're supposed to like are ones that are designed to be "hot". It really says everything you need to know.

That realization really made me relax though. I thought it was due to some deep seated misogynistic feelings for years too. I couldn't enjoy women on TV or in movies, and don't even get me started on games. Cartoons are nailing them though, on the plus side.

I just explained the Bechdel test to my friend last night, after discussing lord of the rings. It’s so sad how many popular movies fail the test, because female characters are accessories in those stories. Of course they’re unlikeable, very few are fully fleshed out characters.

Wow. This is so true and really hits home for me. I hate most lead women characters in romantic comedies. They are so shallow, marriage-obsessed, and vapid. Most women I know aren’t like that at all.

This is why I hated English class my last two years in high-school. I loved reading and writing but being forced to read book after book by white men who clearly hated women and had no idea what women are really like beyond annoyed me. This was back in the 80's. I think there is more diversity now. Ernest Hemingway was the worst. I can't stand him.

One dimensional characters are my biggest issue. This is why I adore Hermione. I never really understood my problem with the girls on sitcoms and soap operas growing up but there was always this nagging feeling of anger towards their behavior. You are made to “like” one character and “dislike” another but you might really identify with the characteristics of a character when their choices end up being stupid and boring and then you just end up feeling sad and annoyed.

The girl with amazing style and plenty of dates treats everyone around her like crap, and doesn’t seem to want to change. The smart girl with good grades has terrible hair, fails to attract the attention of any love interests and probably dies alone and single, but doesn’t seem to care. It definitely seems like that’s how men see young women. It also seems like that’s how they want everyone to see young women.

Something I noticed and liked. On one of the final episodes of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina there is a postmodern examination of the original Sabrina sitcom. At one point Sabrina’s “BFF” character, who defies stereotypes by being a smart, nerdy feminist who is also dating the male lead, laments that if she were in the original show the writers would never give her a boyfriend. They hit the nail on the head.

OH that makes a lot of sense! I also noticed I rarely come across a female character that I can relate to at all, and that makes sense when you realize they're written by men.

LOL so basically almost every single female protagonist in every shonen anime. Thankfully some newer series avert that (eg Black Clover, Jujutsu Kaisen, maybe Demon Slayer) but change is slow.

David Mamet always created a female character in nearly every play and film who "deserved" to be punched. The device is in so much of his work that I figure his entire writing career was fueled by his need to spin justifications to hit women and the public being in the "market" to "purchase" those justifications.
