Because videos are intimidating to many people….like, a ton of people can’t even call to order a pizza, and they are going to create a video that represents their personality?

Yeah, people would love to see a video that was fun or funny and be more attracted to it….the issue is too many people hate the pressure of feeling like they need to make a video to attract.

You’re not looking at this the right way, people choose the apps they choose not because of who they will meet, but what they have to do to join. If it’s easy to set up a profile, even if that user base sucks and will not be successful on one app (Tinder) they are probably going to choose that instead of an app that has more hurdles to jump through but would be a more successful option (eHarmony).

Personality is not an easy bar, but it’s a very complicated thing to assess. I can’t get a sense of someone’s personality even at the most shallow level until I meet them, and it takes months and years to really know them. Pictures are just easy, and most apps are designed to minimize the barrier to entry. Dating apps are shallow by default, and we’re shallow to strangers by default. Because no one has the time to get to know everyone deeply, we have to choose who to dig deeper on. So often people gravitate towards those that can demonstrate positives that are very easy to measure immediately since you know there’s already some good things about them.

Personality is not a silver bullet, it’s just who you are. It’s not a sliding scale and someone can have a “good” personality that is superior to the other guy and therefore the superior personality wins. Personality consists of many qualities, and when it comes to dating (and friendship), it really just boils down to if this person’s personality and yours mix in a way that makes them feel happy being with you. Being more extroverted however, helps give you more exposure to a greater number of people, which increases the probability that you’ll meet someone compatible.

One thing that Reddit(not the red pill) gets so wrong is this idea that 'good personality' men invariably do well while bad personality men do not. The problem is there are many personality types that would be considered good but still struggle to attract women. It's not so much you need to have a good personality, just one that meshes well with the female mind. I'd say the biggest thing is to not be nice. Niceness is like the worst thing you can do to attract a women, it just relegates you to an easy option and creates no doubt. Nice is great for a cousin, a brother, a friend but its ability to attract women is bottom of the barrel.

I don’t think the failure of obscure apps that no one knows about is indicative of anything other than these apps failure to market themselves.

That being said, I also don’t see how it says anything about personality at all. It’s not like these apps overcome any of the basic hurdles of any other dating app - in that one’s personality can takes months or years to get to know, which is why dating apps are considered useless to a lot of people.

This post is like saying “Pig trotters don’t sell well in America, which is proof that Americans don’t like bacon.”

Hint: people who care about personality aren’t going to be using a dating app at all. They’re meeting people through their social networks so they can take their time to get to know them.

I think combination of personality, how someone presents themselves, their character, goals and looks are all important. You can’t easily put that into any kind of app. That’s why for me I think online dating is a waste unless you want to date casually. Can you meet someone online 1000% but it’s hard to find quality and compatible people. It’s much easier through real life interactions in hobbies or activities.

If personality was indeed the silver bullet that people say it is, the demand for voice-based profiles would have at least had these apps in the same ballpark as the visual apps such as Tinder, Hinge, Bumble etc

The target audience isn't going to be attractive, and you don't just turn off the preference for attractive people. But no shit overall, dating apps make profit off people staying on there in the first place.

Let's face facts, looks are the number one criteria for both sexes, by far. It's 50% of the equation, MINIMUM.

As I usually say it, things in common, goals and personnality is what keep people together, and attractiveness is what will make you give a person 5 seconds or 5 minutes of your time to know their personnality.

Imagine you form a connection with someone, they seem super cool, you like them and they seem to like you... and then you see what they look like and they're hideous. Now not only are you disappointed but you also have to explain to someone you like on a personal level that they're not attractive enough for you.

Alternatively, you have a great connection with someone and then they see your picture and change their mind.

Or everything goes well but you both massively stressed yourself out about the possibility that it wouldn't.

That's why these apps fail. Because people are afraid of the bad outcome, or they try it and experience that outcome on either side and it sucks and they give up.

Just saying, the pictures on your profile can say a thousand words each. I’ve found myself swiping left on very attractive objectively men and women because their displayed persona really does not seem compatible with mine.

Ex. I’m very a very outgoing, extroverted person who cannot focus not sit still for very long periods of time . Previous experience with relationships have taught me I wouldn’t be able to enjoy much quality time with someone who’s hobbies revolve entirely around things like movies, anime, video games, reading etc. Profiles like that put me off as I understand our lifestyles just aren’t as likely to be compatible.

Eh.... I see flaws in that argument. First of all, that's based ONLY on dating apps. Many meet each other through many different ways and it's hard to gage what exactly attracted them to each other as only they would each personally know. The majority of the world does NOT use dating apps either. Because the majority of the world can barely afford a smartphone. Remember that a barely heard of country like Uzbekistan has about a third of the people than the entire US East coast line. Same for some countries in Africa that most haven't even heard the name of.

That's two major limits right there.

Now out of all the people that HAVE smartphones AND dating apps there's also that portion that possibly: -gave up and found somebody NOT from the app as "audio based" dating apps. I've NEVER heard of that phrase before despite LITERALLY searching for "personality" dating apps. -used a personality, interest, or hobby based app you didn't list

In the end, you're making a big conclusion about the world despite a relatively small sample size.

Oh and you forgot the GIGANTIC (possibly majority) of people using "dating apps" specifically for fucking. Not anything beyond it.

Not to mention the OTHER gigantic portion of people that learned the hard way from those apps that personality maaaaay be a bit more important than they thought. And were more considerate of it the next time.

Trying to bend the truth a bit to make a point maybe? Idk. Maybe there's some truth in what you say. But it's hard to say a full "yes" to it.
