This story here says that the "Harris is for they/them" ad actually shifted the race by 2.7% points after people watched it. I'd say that the culture war messaging affected the election quite a bit, meaning that the average American does care about it, considering that the average American is an American who is most likely to shift his or her vote based upon a political ad.

Lets look at the 2024 election for an example and why Trump won. “Its the economy, stupid.”

The problem with that is that:

A) Trump tanked the economy with his atrocious COVID response

B) Biden has helped recover the US economy is better than almost any developed country

C) Harris' economic plan was endorsed by multiple Nobel Prize winning economists

D) Trump's plan will add tremendous debt and raise prices even further

There is a ton of rhetoric dedicated to avoiding the fact that people didn't vote for Harris because she's a woman.

The average person might care about wokeism and might be incited to outrage through targeted political adds, but I agree that it isn't the most important issue for most people. Democrats have been promoting candidates without any substance and are then outraged when people don't vote for them. Trump is a dangerous gamble, but I get why some people were willing to risk it, and it isn't all about a woke backlash.

Sure, most people don't care about this stuff. Most care about their wallet, like you said.

But it's not most people who matter in your elections (I'm not American). It's a handful of independent voters who swing blue or red depending on a few hot-button topics close to their hearts on election day.

I'm not a statistician, but I would not be surprised to find that amongst the swing voters issues like 'woke', idPol, 'defund the police' and such mattered a great deal. And people forget that in elections, it's not just the candidates and their manifesto on offer - people consciously or otherwise tend to lump in the viewpoints of those associated with the candidate or their party. e.g. Kamala with radFem despite being a Glock-owning centrist.

The problem with this idea is that the Biden-Harris administration actually passed policies that were good for regular people. Paragraph comparing economic policies is below:

Trump cut taxes on corporations and for the richest people, which vacuumed up wealth to the top, while Biden raised taxes on corporations. Biden passed the American Rescue Plan, which was an economic stimulus bill to speed up the country's recovery from covid, it also provided for direct economic stimulus payments to individual taxpayers with incomes of $75,000 or less (ie, so not corporate fat cats). This was part of the larger Build Back Better plan, which also had provisions to address America's jobs, infrastructure, and family care needs. Harris proposed a $6,000 child tax credit to the parents of newborns, so it was hardly like the Harris campaign just put their feet up and tried to ride on Biden's coattails. It's possible to argue that these weren't necessarily useful to young men, but Biden also forgave over $166 billion in student debt.

I can continue but you get the picture. America elected a president that passed very progressive policies and the left still found reasons to hate him. Economically, Trump has proven time and again he's going to help out the richest people/corporations at the expense of everyone else.

All that's left is the culture war/optics, which the right wing spent a long time controlling the narrative of. The great irony is that neither Biden nor Harris engaged in the culture war bullshit I call out the left for, but Harris' grave had already been dug for her before her campaign even started.

10% of people seem to care a lot, 20% have some interest. Politics is on the big list of topics. The election to me was a battle of shutting up the woke. Trump is the anti-woke, Kamala is the establishment.

People talk about sports, investing, business, politics, kids, dating/relationships, travel, food, shows, and meme culture.

There is two things that made her lose: immigration and the economy.

People suffer from the casual relationship fallacy where if X happens (issues of money) its because of Y (current admin). The economy to most people wasn't good, so they blamed the administration that currently was in office. Most claimed it was better under Trump, and thus voted for him.

The only thing Trump did better was market himself as the better option for dealing with the economy. His pro tariff stance comes across as being pro working class despite the pushback from many professionals. We have to keep in mind just because people have a problem, does not mean they know what solution is best. You would think people would look at third part sources to get informed, but this election revealed otherwise.

Immigration made Democrats look bad. The sanctuary cities that took in migrants did a terrible job at handling the issue. It gave Replubican a lot of leverage against the Democrats. Venezuelan gangs, Haitians eating cats, NYC becoming a shit hole and Chicago having to raise property taxes to offset the debt from immigration. Dems handled the migrant issue terribly, and it was publicized for everyone to see. A lot of people voted Trump from fear of Dems running their town to the ground like how NYC and Chicago became.

Working class people occupy factory work, unskilled labor and manufacturing. Trump goal of bringing back jobs to America is beneficial to them. When you add in deportation they don't have to worry about migrants competing and taking their jobs. Even if it was Trump selling them a dream as usual, and wishful thinking it revealed something about how Americans feel.

How much was sexism and racism involved? I don't know how impactful it was, but it was definitely an issue. For decades we have been told men are natural born leaders, and more equipped to lead. This will naturally make some people biased towards men.

Look, I’m just gonna go ahead and put this here because I keep seeing some version of this over and over and I need to vent.

Trump won for two reasons.

The first is, Americans are going hungry multiple nights a week, and not because they’re working jobs that pay minimum wage. It’s because the severe pricing rates that so many have people have dismissed as “inconvenient” have made people, who three years ago could provide for their family, unable to afford food each night.

My best friend made like, 16 bucks or some shit at the beginning of the Biden administration and could just barely provide for him, his wife, and his two babies. He currently makes 24 bucks an hour and can’t provide for them, despite the pay increase, and has to go without eating dinner 2-3 nights a week so they can stay fed.

I too have had to skip multiple meals a week to make sure my family can because we can’t afford enough groceries to feed us all. Hell, the 50lb bag of dog food I use to buy for 60 dollars is now 90.

So while many people say things like “republicans are only thinking of themselves and they don’t know what it’s like to suffer”, they’re not taking in the fact that a large amount of people in this country can’t provide for themselves of their families despite making 40k-60k a year. That is suffering. That isn’t being selfish.

The second reason he won is due to the fact that everyday the wars in Ukraine and Israel rage on is another day closer that America might have to get physically involved, which means someone’s son or daughter gets to die for a country they have no business dying for. No American, regardless of where they stand on these wars, wants to be forced into fighting them. This all happened under Biden’s administration.

Now, are these things necessarily Biden and Harris’s faults? No.

Are there other mitigating factors that need to be taken into consideration for why these events took place? Yes.

Will thing necessarily get better under a Trump administration? We won’t know until we know.

But regardless of all of that, it’s not unfair to observe how a large portion of the country decided to vote one way over another when they’ve been experiencing the things they’ve been experiencing.

It also doesn’t help that Harris’s main talking point was “I’m not Trump”. That’s not enough. That’s not a solution.

And I say all this as someone who didn’t even vote for the guy. I just recognize why people chose him.

The "online left/right" actually care about the culture wars, and they are the most visible part of politics. The reason why it's look like that "most people don't care" is because most people are not willing to face the consequences of been attacked by those people online, which usually means facing canceling, boycotting and doxxing attempts, and for what? Saying you opinion? What you gain from that? It's not worth it. There's a reason who you vote for is secret, so you don't get intimidated or peer pressured by acquaintances, friends or family. And because of the current polarized and repressive atmosphere, no one is wiling to say the truth to polls. You have to give them your demographic and those can be used to deduce your identity, and what if that info is leaked? I wouldn't risk it myself. Call me paranoid but is better to be safe "just in case" than sorry. That's why most people face to face don't discuss truly controversial stuff like this one, those people who you trust can mudslide online or public your "private" chats with them. For example, Democratic Massachusetts Representative Seth Moulton faced heat since the election for saying he doesn't want his daughter competing against biological men in sports. Predictably, that was followed by backlash from major party figures and organizations. If representatives are pressured into silence, what can you expect from the average Joe? I myself has to use this alternative account to honestly discuss politics because you get instantly banned from other subs just for following "problemic" subs like this one; or some redditors look though your comments trying to find something controversial you said in a totally unrelated topic, trying to get a cheap way to discredit you instead of addressing the actual argument presented. That's why a lot people latch on celebrities who say it "like it is" because they themselves can't, they actually have to worry about looking as pristine as posible for employers, unlike a controversial political figure.

I disagree. The close race, that resulted in a blanket win across the board red through narrow majority towards red, suggests instead the subgroups are just as they show in the stats, where men rose up and voted Trump, women rose up and voted Kamala, and those who have a life , kids, and want their kids to have a future, voted Trump for economy.

The votes start gender baseline, then the swing goes to Trump for economy, where those who have a life, want to make their life more affordable and have a future. So in a sense, yes gender war, and no not leading gender war. The remaining those whom voted, just want a better life. Its really where they are phased out, tired of politics, and just want the job to get done. They feel like Trump will do it, and end wars so they don't have to be drafted, because hell with housing prices.. why do they want to fight in a war for whom?

So you go its NOT GENDER WAR, no it kinda is partially. Many votes start out plumping out based on gender, but the swing goes to economy.
