I see it all the time—straight women joking that they wish they could date women because it would be “simpler.” Like men are too much, so women must be a softer alternative.

But here’s the rub: statistically, queer women’s relationships aren’t easier. They come with their own storms. Higher rates of breakups, shorter average relationship length, emotional intensity that can spiral, and a whole extra layer of social stigma or family rejection. In some ways, it’s harder.

So when I hear “it’d be easier to date a woman,” I can’t help but wonder: is that really about wanting women—or is it about romanticizing an escape from men? Is it fetishizing intimacy between women without respecting the reality of it?

I’m genuinely curious how people see this. Why does this myth persist? Why do so many women imagine sapphic relationships as an oasis of ease when the data—and lived experience—show they can be just as messy, painful, and complicated?

I want to hear from queer women and straight women alike. Do you think this fantasy comes from projection? From media portrayals? From the idea that women will “just understand” each other? Or is it something deeper?
