What are some hobbies that are an immediate turn-off for you and where do you draw the line between a hobby being acceptable or unattractive?

Any hobby thay is not just a hobby, but an unhealthy obsession to the point where it takes all precedence. Ove seen this most commonly with SPECIFICALLY world of warcraft, magic: the gathering, mecha anime, and One piece. But if anything had become so important to you that you don't shower anymore, miss events/dates/meetings to engage in them, and/or is literally the only thing you're capable of talking about, it's a problem.

I don't think I've met a healthy WoW enjoyed tnh but I've met plenty of healthy anime fans and Magic fans. Just touch grass too and then we can play magic while discussing if Nami will have a birth family reveal or something but PLEASE don't let anything take over your life singlehandedly

I had to really think about that one to come up with with something. I would say keeping insects eg. Spiders as pets. My arachnophobia could never and I really hate bugs. Snakes, rats, idk some raptors are all fine just not bugs

Odd question. There’s no hobby that is a turn-off, even if it’s one I don’t understand. Having something you enjoy doing, that isn’t work, is generally healthy. I’m a horse chick, and I also do a crafting type hobby that became a very lucrative side business. Those things take up time, definitely more than 5 hours. I don’t know many hobbies that people only spend 5 hours doing weekly.

Most team sports are kind of a turn off for me, but it definitely wouldn’t be a dealbreaker, and I could see myself going to games with someone who was enthusiastic about it as long as they’re cool with it not being my thing.

Anything that totally takes over our shared space would be a problem for me, but that’s more of a failure to manage space constraints well than any particular hobby. I don’t care if someone has 5,000 Warhammer figures or a huge beer can collection or whatever as long as it’s not keeping our living space from being useful and aesthetically pleasing for both of us.

Edit: Honestly, if anyone has a long list of hobbies that are total dealbreakers, I’d question how well they’re going to fare in any long-term relationship—people’s interests naturally change over time. I got into hot yoga for several years and went several times a week. I started drawing 4 years ago, and take a bit of time to draw most days. My husband got into anime after we’d been together for over 15 years. I’d feel really limited if I couldn’t explore new interests without worrying about turning my husband off, and I imagine he would as well.

Going to bars and stuff is an immediate turn off, though that isn’t really a hobby and more so just an activity that people do.

I don’t really care about the hobbies per se. It’s just that certain hobbies attract certain personalities, and certain personality traits or mannerisms are what I find annoying or a turn off.

I dated a guy who did stock car racing and I will never do that again. Saw him crash twice and just couldnt do it. We broke up and about 6 years he died at 25 from a crash. Probably wouldnt date someone who did rodeo for the same reason. 🤷

I have a friend whose fiancé collects super rare insects which would be a turn-off for me because you aren’t bringing those in my house 😂

But minus personal disgust I see hobbies in general as a good thing, especially if time management is a non issue.

Edited to add: I didn’t even think of dog breeding and gun collecting like some of the other commentators. I guess I have more “not in my house” hobbies than I thought.

for me, anything super nerdy immediately raises assumptions that we probably won’t be super compatible ex TTRPG. ik it’s an assumption that’s occasionally incorrect, but super nerdy guys often are associated w personality traits that i find unattractive ex highly neurotic, introverted, awkward, shy. and this is coming from an intro semi nerdy girl

also hunting. something about shooting and killing things for fun just feels a bit sociopathic to me.

I really hate Funko pops. I think they are incredibly ugly. I’m not against collectibles in general. At least Pokemon cards and warhammer are activities you do with other people irl.

A man being super into Funko collecting wouldn’t necessarily be a dealbreaker but it would give me pause. I really don’t want a wall of ugly dolls taking up a wall in my home.

Any violent natured sports. Violence just turns me off. If he had a boxing tournament or something, I would love to be able to be there and support him, but violence makes me so uncomfortable.

Team sports - ones that are on tv - like soccer, basketball, football, hockey - whatever. I feel like often it’s their whole personality, and they schedule their lives around the team calendar. Dress up in their team jerseys. Yell at the tv. And again, I want to take an interest and support my partner, but god do I not want to watch a soccer game on tv or irl. Don’t care for it.

Cars, not mechanic car stuff, but the drag racy car stuff. Going fast. Racing. It’s just unsafe and such a turn off. Completely fine if it’s gokarting or something in safe controlled environments. But racing in the streets? Hard no.

Anything that involves killing. Hunting, fishing, whatever. I just don’t find killing animals attractive at all. The idea gives me the ick.

I’m sensing my own pattern here. Anything that involves potentially harming a living being. I just don’t have that disregard for life.

I like there to be a reasonable balance between active and passive hobbies, and creative and derivative ones. But I think the active and creative hobbies more interesting.

Active and passive is pretty obvious, I think - everyone needs down time, but I find playing sports a lot more interesting than watching sports, say. And making something original more interesting than recreating or altering something someone else has made. Painting miniatures, coloring books, and knitting entirely following other people's patterns are examples of derivative hobbies. I can totally get how they might be relaxing, but they kind of bore me... and when all your hobbies are derivative, it's a good bet it won't work out. Unless your work is very creative, I guess? (My definition of creative is fairly broad - currently much of my creative work is around things like robot design, so I don't mean "in the arts" as such, though arts can certainly count. I've also been writing in several different formats.)

I'm far more likely to be interested and willing to be involved in more active and more creative things. Oh, and I'm not that keen on video based things, and don't tend to want to watch things on screens that much. (This is totally a me thing, though considering how many guys have been dead set on me watching and liking their favorite shows, it's a good thing to get out there.)

Personally, I am turned off by men who are really into their personal social media presence. I'm very private so we probably wouldn't be compatible. I also refuse to date men who are into PC gaming (or gaming in general, really). I think the hobby can very easily take over people's lives.

Im not fond of pets and people that make pets their whole identity and hobby. Like collecting insects, snakes, farm animals, dogs, bunnies, fish, whatever. I dont like the idea of being asked to take care of something living and potentially being responsible for it dying.

Similarly anything that might put me in a carer position because of danger. So any sport that comes with a potential to a serious injury, disability etc. So like rock climbing, motorbiking, racing, etc. I dont want to take care of someone that decided they needed a dopamine kick and broke their skull doing it.

Just dont put me in any caring position and I'm fine with your hobbies.

I assume they are into their hobbies a normal amount and don't make it their identity. Don't care what your hobby is, once you make it your personality it's a turn off. I like to play games but I hate people who self identify as "gamers" for example.

Deal breakers:

Weird pets like insects.

Collecting dead things. Again like insects. Taxidermy

Nothing aggressive like boxing. I don't mind stuff like jijuitsu or karate though. Or fencing. Just not the ones where people actually get injured.

Gambling

Trophy hunting

Fantasy football

Things that are life threatening like cave diving

Edit: expensive hobbies like horse girl or collecting things that are expensive. You have a few comic books? Okay. Your comic book collection is worth $2000? Err.... Maybe not.

You like Lego? Okay. You have $5000 worth of Lego? Not so much

Okay, thank you for explaining. I think that murder is okay if it’s necessary for society to function, if that makes sense - oversimplified. It’s less voluntary if it’s their job. They don’t take joy in killing, they are doing it out of need. (Obviously that’s not 1:1 how it really works, some of them enjoy it, it’s just vastly generalized )

It’s completely fair that you don’t argue, obviously. I will admit my opinion is a little bit contradictory. I eat meat, but I object to hunting as a hobby. I’m against killing animals as a general rule, but it’s a part of the cycle of life, so that’s just how it is. Obviously my views aren’t strong enough that I don’t eat meat, but they still exist.

I guess anything risky to their health/body or anything very thrill seeking. I like a safe and healthy lifestyle, so I like men who share that value. Also anything that involves harming or exploiting animals is a hard no.

With any other hobbies as long as he’s moderate and levelheaded and we have compatible personalities, I don’t see any problems. As long as we can still share other quality time together.
