This kind of thing makes me so fucking angry.

People who use this logic start out assuming that structurally held power inequalities only exist against one group and not the other, they don't take the necessary steps to arrive at their conclusion. When people provide examples of racism against whites and sexism against men, they're providing evidence that contradicts that base assumption, and if this base assumption is in conflict with one of its tenets they have to reexamine the base assumption itself.

However, what they do instead is that they essentially restate their argument without actually having to prove it whatsoever: they frame every example of racism against minorities and sexism against women with fluffy terms such as "structural and institutional inequalities" and they frame every example of racism against whites and sexism against men as "ohhh uhhh that's just prejudice". In other words, they attempt to take the new evidence and pretzelise it so it fits into their Narrative^TM, instead of revising their worldview in light of new evidence. So there is no possible evidence you can provide these people to convince them that racism against whites is just as bad as racism against minorities.

I'm a "person of colour" myself but I can see that this is some crazy mental gymnastics.

So I was covering a class (High School) and this one kid, black male put this out to some other students "Black people can be racist." This girl, who is also black, goes into the whole "Well, black people can be prejudice, but they can't be racist, because systematically they are the minority." The black male then says "Ok, say I own a restaurant, and some Latino people come in, and since I don't like Latino people, I refuse to serve them. Isn't that racist?" The guy turned to me and was like "Mr......" what do you think? I'm a Caucasian male mind you, and I was like "I sure as heck ain't getting involved in this, you guys keep going, you're doing great." (Last thing I need is someone accusing me of being racist).

Now, that girl is one of the more intelligent kids in this school. But I know full well she gets that way of thinking from the authors the school invites, who show off that same narrative.

I get the IDEA of Systemic Racism, in theory. But I think it's rather pointless in the day to day. If someone feels they are being treated in an unfair way because of their race, they aren't going to sit there and say "Well I am being prejudiced here." No, they are going to say "This is some Racist BS!"

On account of racism, the dispute here is based on the definition...

Typically, the left defines racism to be separate from prejudice, existing on a "structural" level. So, sure, strictly speaking, racism of that sort does not affect white people. But, people who use this definition need to be able to give a reason for why it is structural, which most proponents fail to do (although I can see that you could justify the definition with the proper amount of nuance using a statistical survey of the population, maybe we'll get that with the census soon).

The majority of people define racism as racial prejudice, making the change in definition by the left to be rather off-putting, as the concepts are quite distinct from one another. Considering that people use the terms as if they are the same without ever defining it (usually both sides of an argument will assume that they already have an agreed upon definition), it is unsurprising that when people hear claims that contradict their definitions, they end up spiraling into unproductive ranting.

Assuming they define sexism against women similarly as they do for racism, being structurally supported opporession, saying that men are not the subjects of such sexism is just wrong. University quotas, job deaths, homelessness, child-possession disputes, jail sentences, I need not go on considering the sub I'm writing this in, all disproportionately affect men on the societal level. Such sexism, it must be noted, doesn't have to just affect one side of a binary (haha); on societal scale structures as these, double and triple standards are possible, however paradoxical (I say that mainly for the feminists reading this, I know there are a few).

Here’s my question for these types, regarding the “only whites can be racist because whites have the power” thing (as if your run of the mill Trailer Park Trevor has any real power): if I go to Nigeria and start barking the infamous N-word, I’m not being racist, right? Because I’d be a minority and black people would have the power. Right?

This is stupid intersectionality. It's bogus. They talk of definitions, but the dictionary meaning has not changed at all. Racism is thinking one's own race is superior; sexism is discriminating against the opposite sex. Intersectionality is rooted in white superemacy. White people do not control the whole world. I have never heard of any institutional system specifically designed to sweepingly deny white people or men in their entirety any sort of rights.

Mastodon could have certainly had more tact, but I feel like "sexism against men" is basically the worst possible way to describe men's issues. It immediately conjures up exactly the wrong images and impressions. What we face is not classical sexism the way it's faced by women. We aren't getting catcalled on the street here. We face a variety of specific legal and social issues from a system that favors women in certain specific ways. So I think the solution here is to be specific. Instead of saying, "what about sexism against men?" say "what about the fact that suicide rates are so much higher in men?"

And, frankly, let's be honest. "Sexism against men" and "racism against whites" have become right wing dog whistles and talking points. They're the same thing as "all lives matter" or "blue lives matter." They're cute Fox News sound bites designed to promote a visceral and divisive reaction from people who really ought to be working together towards the common goal of not being dicks to each other.

I thing OP was being a dick and trying to get a rise out of @MastodonProject, and it worked. "Get your head out of your ass" is a perfectly valid if rude response, because they recognized it as the right wing sound bite that it is. I'd have gone with "turn off Fox News and talk about the issues like an educated adult" instead.

OP is acting in bad faith, knowing exactly what kind of rise he'd get out of Mastodon, and then using it to in turn get a rise out of us. He wants us to react in a simplistic knee-jerk way. This is divisive. This is not an "us vs. them" scenario. This is a, "in some ways, odds have been stacked against boys and men in the modern world, and maybe we should re-examine certain core assumptions in our system to make things better" scenario. Frothing at the mouth gets us nothing but being dismissed as out of touch right wing loonies.
