Absolutely. So many libfems and dumb libertarian men say “DoN’t PuNiSh WoMeN” as to why sex work should be decriminalized. No. The more effective policy would be to arrest and charge men appropriately (and shame them WAY more societally when they aren’t caught) rather than treating it like a slap on the wrist. We need to reduce demand.
Just like we are starting to make headway on harm reduction with drugs by focusing on dealers rather than addicts, we need to do this with Johns. They are the ones causing harm to the victims, who are the kidnapped sex workers. And almost ALL of them are men, even when their victims are men. It’s disgusting.

I think that's the Nordic method. You know what, though, sex trafficking goes up in countries that use it.
[–]Allaboutb1FDS Newbie10 points11 points12 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Are you sure that was the Nordic model? I read Paid For by Rachel Moran and she said the the Nordic model (sex buying is criminalised, selling is not and women are helped to leave) is better than the model increasingly adopted in Western Europe (Germany, Belgium, Netherlands, Portugal and so on) of ‘decriminalise and regulate’, which basically turns the state into a pimp. She described how gangs immediately increase trafficking women into a country when decriminalisation happens. I have another book about it, Pimp State, about decriminalisation, but haven’t read it yet. Do you have any resources you recommend?
[–]Davina33FDS Disciple5 points6 points7 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Trigger Warning⚠️
I read this story by a woman who was sex trafficked to Amsterdam. It was truly horrific. She says that she a woman shot to death as part of a snuff film. I believe her, despite people insisting that snuff doesn't exist. These poor women lead horrible lives. It angers me honestly when I read about women arrested for prostitution and the Johns are just left alone. These men are vile.

I agree and wasn’t meaning for the analogy about drugs to start the conversation there about legalization.
Large scale studies have definitely been done and legalization increases trafficking for sure. Here’s one with researchers from three different countries: http://eprints.lse.ac.uk/45198/1/Neumayer_Legalized_Prostitution_Increase_2012.pdf
[–]FluffandRaincloudsRuthless Strategist5 points6 points7 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
If I recall correctly, countries with legalized prostitution can easily hide traffickers in plain sight: https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-46919294
"Some researchers say 4,000, others say 8,000. Some say 10% are trafficked, others say 90%. Even with that lowest figure, 400 girls are selling sex against their will. They are essentially raped every day. It will not help to make them disappear elsewhere in the city."

Thank you for sharing this story. It's horrible but doesn't surprise me in the least.
The two sex workers I've known had similar stories, even though both of them claimed to love the work and found it empowering. They were in deep denial and came from horrific childhoods, so their sense of normalcy was totally fucked.
Both made pretty good money but neither of them ever got ahead. Sex work isn't built for social mobility, period.

Their bodies absorb what the men put to them, the more sex you have the more men will see it. The men's goal is to break you open and the more damaged you are, the more it's easy for them to take advantage of you.
[–]AyemHerselfFDS Disciple[M] 92 points93 points94 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
This is why you shouldn't listen too closely to redpill YouTubers. Your body count is not visible to men, and women aren't damaged from having too much sex. Naturally, redpill men want you to think otherwise because this narrative is how they really manipulate women.
I'm leaving your comment up so users can get an idea of the bullshit that RP likes to spread about women. Knowledge is power and we should be aware of what they're up to. But also understand it's based on lies and their own manipulative desires. But I will lock this before it turns ugly.

While it's true that more sex does not equal worthlessness, many men would disagree. In cultures that strongly value "sexual purity" a female used for sex could easily development low self-esteem, confidence and sense of self worth. This could in turn make vulnerable girls targets to shit men who are into exploitation.

Lol, they're the same. Let me just change this to:
Pic on the left:
-pretends to handpick customers (sorry, this isn't how it works. YOU are the product, they pick you. You don't call random men and tell them to pay you for sex).
-Pretends this is what their customers are like. I don't care about the one in a million or the liars, I care about whats actually happening. Most men who ask this of you actually end up backing out and want regular sex. Or they want that + sex. They have to have sex.
-Yeah, they "choose". Let me guess, they also are addicted to drugs or alcohol, have a history of trauma, or are mentally ill or have personality disorders.
-The percentage isn't tiny, it's basically non-existent. All my friends used to be sex workers, if this lifestyle was possible they would've done it.
Pic on the right:
-True, but also:
-you don't have to be in a third world country or be getting forced by a pimp for this to be a horrible lifestyle that you are coerced into. All the sex workers in America that I met were the same. It was be a prostitute or starve, don't act like our hookers are happy to do it and are rich. Most of them are still at or below the poverty line.
[–]GiveMeAJuiceFDS Newbie34 points35 points36 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
I think there is a striking difference between the two. The one on the right has significantly less choice than the one on the left.
They are both awful. But the one on the left is worse. Women in those countries often have corrupt police who allow it to go on. Many more child trafficking rings, etc. And like you said the one on the left usually is a sad story of someone who is an addict and does so to get their fix. The one on the right often is a girl sold by her family to pay to survive, or a girl captured and threatened. I feel the right is worse.
It's crazy to me how things like porn have become almost dinner table talk appropriate. Everyone looks at it. The websites that have them all have some of the worst examples of women being taken advantage of. I think something should be done about that too. Not sure what though.
It's no matter what going to be labeled by feminists as taking away their right to their bodies... unfortunately.
[–]shapelessdreamsFDS Newbie10 points11 points12 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I would like to say that many police in America are actively engaged in assaulting and coercing Sex Workers, both on and off the record. The woman on the right may be in the west but she’s still susceptible to extreme amounts of violence. The tunnel vision of social media makes us think that the happy hooker is the main western narrative when it’s really not. Most have just scraped by, have had extremely negative experiences with LE and the like. They are ostracized and usually have very little stability. Point is SW is dangerous no matter where you are and what you do. The risk is so high for so little reward.
[–]Whateverbabe2FDS Apprentice8 points9 points10 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
When I said they're the same, I meant they were both negative, not that one was good and the other bad as the pic tried to show.
I agree with you that the one on the right is worse but it's really important to remember that the majority of sex-workers are not forced into it by pimps and yet it's still a valid form of coercion. My family and I come from a third world country. We were friends with the prostitutes on our streets, and it while it might have looked like a "free choice" to Westerners we knew that just because pimps didn't hold guns to their heads did not mean that was true. I can't speak for other countries, but in mine at least these made up the majority of prostitutes.

OMG... I literally have a friend from high school who did this. She became a stripper/sugar baby in her early 20's. To her credit (and I do give credit) she paid her way through her English degree. She wrote a self published Amazon book about her experience sugaring for a guy who had four kids and a wife who had no idea. At the end of the book, she screws over her sugar daddy by leaving evidence of their multi year affair on his front doorstep so that his wife can find it. She believes that his wife is frumpy, stupid and sexless the whole time. Now she does random writing projects for Penthouse and interviews on trashy radio shows. On the one hand, I'm jealous that she has a paid for English degree. On the other... It's all kind of gross and not how I'd like to live my life. She used to be a nice person when we hung out in HS.

They really never think about/care about how what they do affects other women. I work with an awful man whose addicted to camgirls (we know from his twitter account, which has his full name), and he treats all the women at work (including minors) as pieces of meat. Constant sexual harassment, but not enough to warrant getting fired. He’s admitted to writing erotica about specific girls at work. These girls obviously fuel his fantasies and because of it he has no clue how to act properly around real life women.

they dont approve of either. men dont want women to earn money through sex and enjoy it. men also dont want women to think that they are worthy of having the right to work or exist without being treated like a sex toy, without being reminded that a woman/girl has it much worse somewhere else in the world and that she should be 'happy' shes not being treated like them. men have trained women to be ashamed of sex, we've been taught to be faithful and obedient to trashy men since the dawn of time. men will happily use women for sex if all they have to do is throw money at them, they just dont want us to benefit from it at all, this is why they throw this bullshit at us. either way we are losing, sex work is exploitative

> men have trained women to be ashamed of sex, we've been taught to be faithful and obedient to trashy men since the dawn of time.
I've been told this for a long time. That women are just as sex driven as men. And that the reason that they don't act in devious ways as much as men is because they were brought up by society to feel ashamed by it. But that never rang true to me because of the number of men that are willing to risk it all, life in jail, etc to do horrible things to gratify them sexually.
I think women generally are less sex driven, or at least require a much greater connection with a person before they are similar.
When you say "they", I think yes like a big majority are motivated by sex. But there is a solid percentage that wouldn't do things like pay for sex, etc. I think society needs to grapple and come to terms with the fact that men and women are different. Men are by nature so fueled by getting sex that many times they will often sacrifice another persons feelings for it.

Last-minute booking? Car sponge, chopped into a square. Even less time? Kitchen sponge, the one with the thick foam and the scourer on the other side. Chop the scourer off and cut a square of foam. Boil it if you have the time.”
Shoving a kitchen scouter in my vagina when I’m in my period so some scrote can fuck me as he wishes????
HELL NAW SIS

The challenge is tenable, but the amount of money would be impossible to match. Unless you can just start being a doctor or get super lucky in trading.
[–]Summerisle7FDS Disciple2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I'm not a doctor nor a trading whiz, I don't make that kind of money. So what you're saying is, I should just give up my job and go into prostitution? There's nothing in between?
[–]randolphism-1 points0 points1 point 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Well if you want that kind of money yeah. The inbetween is earning a moderate wage.
[–]krissy_173FDS Newbie12 points13 points14 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Something kinda similar happened in Canada. A sex worker who was making decent money as a dominatrix took the prostitution laws to the Supreme Court and won. Prostitution and even pimping are no longer illegal. I’m ok with decriminalizing prostitution but the problem is the MAJORITY of women who find themselves in this line of work didn’t exactly chose it. There’s a variety of reasons why and most are sad and have to do with either systemic racism or socio economic reasons. Rarely is it the sugar-daddy pretty woman type scenario. While I haven’t read the whole decision, I’ve read parts and it’s not a bad decision. If anyone is interested, it’s a 2015 SCC decision called Bedford.
[–]Informal-Form---FDS Newbie1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
YES YES YES YES YES! It's not shaming sex workers to talk about the millions of women who are forced into it!
[–]plummyjellyfishFDS Newbie5 points6 points7 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Oh, ffs, I'm so sick of hearing this goddamn tripe from so-called sex positive feminists. The handful of women who feel empowered by prostituting themselves for designer handbag money don't get to speak for the millions (!!!) of women, children, and, yes, men, who endure lives of misery, degradation and torture in sexual slavery.
[–]AveryTheOctopusFDS Newbie2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
So many young women in my college organization who I had to pull from the brink. From stripping to OnlyFans to sugar babies, it’s basically encouraged in alternative circles. But they don’t realize how vulnerable of a position they put themselves in until the horror is unfolding. Sex work is not easy work, and I’m especially scared for all the 18 yr old girls who jump into it thinking they’re going to be empowered without realizing these men will scam and abuse you the second they get the chance. And then those men who go to strip clubs and watch porn turn around and degrade the women who serviced them. It’s not empowering
[–]oasisreverieFDS Newbie2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Yes, and libfems never talk about how sex workers have a higher rate of suicide attempts, mental illnesses, and drug addictions, as well as overdoses.
They usually gloss over those statistics, but then appropriate and bastardize tantric meditation as a sexual ritual, when it really isn't about sex at all.

I don’t at all. I’m anti sex work. I’m responding to the image, which brings up the popular libfem view of sex work on the left panel (oh we pick our clients, it’s safe, we are autonomous). I don’t feel I can speak for the right panel but for the left part of the image, I was trying to illuminate the realities of SW. Maybe I should delete my comment if it’s being interpreted so wrongly.

I literally said I’m trying to get out and I’ve made sacrifices to get out, like I was unemployed, I moved in with abusive family to cut down on living costs. I said I dreaded the idea of returning and do not plan to return unless an emergency happens.
You’re being kind of cruel. Sex workers aren’t the only ones engaged in patriarchy, every woman is. Every job I’ve been in, from private sector to academia, I’ve experienced sexual harassment and forms of systemic sexism. Don’t dog sex workers only for supposedly playing into patriarchy.
This is a dating sub, where most woman here has not decided yet to be a separatist, and still engage with men. Come on.
[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points0 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
If you’re going to come at me for realizing there’s a chance I might choose to return, bc I don’t have health insurance, car, my housing is insecure, there’s mass unemployment, there’s a pandemic, god knows what can happen with Covid, then you’re just an asshole. I’d rather engage with ppl who are actually fucking proud of me for staying out for almost a year.

You say this as if the line between consensual and coerced is thick and bright red with a "Stop" sign. I assure you it's not. A lot of these "sex workers" are being pimped too. Trust me on that.

Not even SWers are asking for legalization. They’re asking for decrim. Two different things.
[–]hexchromosomeFDS Newbie8 points9 points10 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Legal prostitution is not good for prostitutes. 89 percent of prostitutes want to escape the industry, and countries that legalize prostitution see an INCREASE in trafficking. Demand goes up, but supply never matches.
The Nordic Model is the only option that's worked in the past. Selling sex is decriminalized, but buying sex is criminalized.
[–]Eris_the_FairFDS Apprentice7 points8 points9 points 5 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link
I have a boyfriend. I don't want legal hookers to be popular. I think it would be better for prostitutes if we tried to give them a second chance at something more fulfilling than being a cum rag for LVM. Rather than turning our backs on her as a society pretending like it's ok.
[–]CassieGreen85FDS Disciple5 points6 points7 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
That’s why prostitution should be legal
That's not the REAL issue though. Sure, it'd "help" women currently suffering in the prostitution system, but that's not the problem nor it will fix the hundreds of thousands of girl/women sexual slaves all over the world.
The real, actual issue is teaching men to NOT see women as objects, as commodities, and as dolls to enact sexual depravity. The issue lies on MEN. They have to change the way they view women as a whole.
And yes, sex as an act to be done TO a woman, as opposed to an act done WITH a woman, is also sexual depravity, because the man doesn't care about her during the sex. Doesn't matter if it's just "vanilla" missionary or hardcore BDSM.
It's important to remember not to deflect the focus, because that's what men are betting on for you to do: To put the focus on the wrong part of the issue so they don't have to change their ways.

We are anti-sex work, not anti-sex worker.
The whole point of the post is that these two are different, but more attention is given to the former.
If you're really willing to understand our perspective, you should read the handbook. If you're not, this is not the sub for you.
