of course because the women want the workplace to change to accommodate them because they're used to special treatment and not getting it means they're discriminated against
You're obviously not male. Jokes targeting men, male's sexuality, etc., are extremely common among men and in male spaces.
Women demanding there be no "sexist jokes" is them demanding there be special accommodation for them, specifically, and to not be treated like other men.
I am a female software engineer. I come to this subreddit because i like to have a balanced view, and i like to be aware of issues that impact each gender specifically. From my perspective, this image is divisive, and is a strawman argument entirely. Or perhaps it is a response to some horrific extreme feminist echo chamber that deserves no attention in the first place. But the argument that it addresses is not something that should be dismissed entirely.
I believe women have a hard time going into this field because it can be difficult trying to fit in with a group of people that you arent used to interacting with. I am a female in my late 20's, and every single person at my company that i have worked with has been male, the vast majority which are 50-70 years old. It takes a huge leap from your comfort zone, and, with the educational challenges, it can be a scary thing! Up until the point where i began to mesh with my coworkers, i constantly second guessed my abilities and wondered if i had made a huge mistake.
Women arent necessarily less passionate about this field - in the early computer science days, the majority of workers were women. That was up until the career path started being painted as a job for a reclusive masculine figure. You know the one im talking about - the archtype that comes to mind when i mention the word "programmer"
I am absolutely not trying to preach or promote some feminist agenda on the subreddit dedicated to mens rights. I am just here to express some level of disappointment. Many of us recognize your struggles as a gender and want to be on your side! These types of posts are divisive, and make it difficult for someone from my perspective feel like i can back you guys up where i think it matters.
How is my experience wrong? I chose my career path independently of my social circle, but in the back of my mind, there was always the nagging thought that "people of this predominantly male archtype are just more naturally skilled at this career". This thought caused me to go from "this is outside of my comfort zone" to "holy shit what have i gotten myself into". The reason that i am successful is because (1) i am comfortable expanding my social circle (albeit difficult when people dont always actually want to "study"), and (2) i consistently forced myself to mentally defeat that archtype.
Now, youre right. This career path is not for everyone. But if i see the way a person approaches a problem, i can quickly determine if this path is for them. Or if they are going to struggle. I had to convince my close friend, a female, that this shit was right up her ally. She had the same concerns and she has the same struggles. The same story. But once you take a step in the right direction, you keep going.
There is no doubt that this archtype and this invisible wall that we create is utter bullshit. Any person that has a passion for solving problems can and should be an engineer. Many people, men and women, arent wired for it. There is no need for protesting. Or accusing one party for discouraging.. Or actively incintivizing one party for entering (although history will tell that this is effective). We just need to perpetuate a different archtype for programmers.
Now why in the hell would i be suggesting that we magically create more women to participate in the STEM field? That makes absolutely no sense. Please take a look at the principle of charity when it comes to discussions. Quit trying to make me say shit that i didnt say at all.
Read critically. Think critically. Take a moment and think about where YOU were at when you started your career path. Think about how you would feel if you walked into all of your accounting classes for your first semester and you were the only male in all of them. A completely normal reaction would be "what the hell am i doing here?" If you still dont understand, maybe ask a male nurse or two what his experience is like. Many will tell you a similar story.
I am not trying to derail your movement - i am telling you that these memes, and your arguement for that matter, is extremely dismissive to the experiences of people like me that want to help you address MENS ISSUES (you know, the thing that this subreddit is supposed to be about). How am i supposed to do that if i have to sift through this garbage that completely invalidates everything ive seen with my own two eyes?
I am here expressing that your movement would be more powerful if it didnt do the same shit that the radical feminist movement is doing (E.g. making the other gender look like fucking morons, strawman arguments, etc.)
Post whatever you guys want. I am not demanding shit. But i am not going to take you seriously. And given that you are the only subreddit that i can go to to actually understand mens issues, youre going to find your movement fails as pathetically as the radfem one.
I am here making recommendations that you guys be more objective so that you can be taken seriously. And you tell me that i am making demands. Laughable.
Really? You want to make changes while alienating half of the population? Movements need people to give them any power. Now i see.. this is not a place for change, its a place where you all just jerk each other off and complain about girls.. Cool.
Lol, i wasnt complaining, or saying that anything needs to change.. I was addressing how this meme makes light of an actual difficulty that people have. And that it has nothing to do with men's rights.
You really don’t get it do you? This article says it right there. There is a PREFERENCE that is based on gender. Although it may benefit your beliefs you forget to think about those left behind. My buddy graduated on deans list with STEM based studies and a diploma. Where we live, there is a large potion of females with engineering degrees, and that is absolutely great! However, he can’t find a job, because everyone competing in middleville USA has about the same experience: nothing. This article explains that two people, both the same, are not worth the same. If you have a vagina you are worth more, but I guess that makes sense seeing how many people refuse to care about men’s skyrocketing suicide rates, or that the amount of female abusers in domestic violence issues are getting DANGEROUSLY close to 50%, yet the convicted abusers remain at minuscule %’s that are female. How about the fact that men tend to receive longer and harsher punishments than a female, or the massive issues in custody court.
We are worth less, and I guess that is fine because women are doing great! Just drape a curtain above all the males and pretend problems don’t exist.
Reverse the roles in this article, imagine if you read something like:

Suddenly that is sexist?
