I can't tell if she did it maliciously or intentionally. Someone doing a daily jog would usually be in light clothing and running shoes, and jogging would indicate that he's running at a leisurely, relatively fixed pace. I don't think that's hard to identify, even in the dark. Even if she failed to identify, she could try running for a bit and see if OP chases after her, which is almost definitely no (haven't seen a jogger change their pace for anything other than traffic lights and dangerous situations). Also, hands were probably swinging around a little and not holding anything. It's a serious misjudgement if she can't even assess these minor things. Lack of situational awareness? Or she did it because she could get away with it?

Also, that comment about "She was in fear for her life, which you wouldn't understand because of your privilege". That bugs me. For one, it goes against their own logic, which accepts that more men are victims of violent crime (so there's higher chance that any given man has trauma from being a victim than a woman and a better chance they would understand that fear).

But also, people like this seem to imagine that men walk around at night without a care in the world and that couldn't be further from the truth. All men get scared and go on high alert when they see someone dodgy, or that looks threatening. It doesn't matter who you are. You get tense and you start thinking of what you're going to do if something happens.

And sure those strategies are generally different for men and women. Men are probably more likely to try and diffuse or fight, whereas women would want to exit because they know if something violent happens, they don't have as much option to fight. But again, it's far more likely that it's actually going to happen to a man.

I think most reasonable people see past this stuff. But it's pretty frustrating to read. That's probably my male rage though, gotta calm that shit down.

IDGAF. I've been peppersprayed in training in the mil, and after getting hit, you're at everyone's mercy. You can maybe see blurs, but that's it. If someone pepper sprays me, I'm dumping on them, I'll still be able to see their shape. There's zero way to know if they are going to stab, shoot, or have homies waiting in the bushes to jump you. They assaulted first and took sight away, even in most liberal states that's more than justifiable to mag dump on them.

Worst part is, YOU were assaulted. If you defended yourself with your hands and feet, who do you think the police would believe?

Something similar happend to me, the difference in my case was that when the woman tried to pepper spray me i manage to stop her hand ( it was reflex i honestly thought she would hit me with something) she froze i let her hand go and walked away, geanted i can look scary at night and understand the fear, what i would advice is tu go around them with bit more distance ( half meter is more than enought) but if she stops magnife the distance, and this applyes to men as well since it is a sign they are ready to react ( and sometimes overreact)

As a woman, I've been kind of nervous when men just walk up from behind me but I also pay attention to my surroundings and don't just go spraying men in the face because I feel threatened. Honestly it's like a switch goes off in women's heads like "oh goodness a man. He's going to want me or to do something to me" when 99.98% of the time that is far from the case. They are trying to get to where they're going just like you. She was wrong as hell for that and the justifications ppl gave you were also bullshit. I've had trauma but I don't go around making that everyone else problem.

This happened to me, but I think the lady committed an assault.

It was late at night when my summer classes ended around 9-10pm. I had rented a house near my school due to the lateness of that last class. It was only walking distance, but the side of the road doesn't have lights. There's not many people at night, so I'm safe.

I looked behind me as it's one of the things I always do for caution, and I saw someone charging at me. Jogging late at night is quite unusual for me, so I thought the guy would strike at the darkness. I bolted while he was still far away, and I ran towards my school's other gate. I was so scared. The guard was still there, and the lights were on, but the gate has been already closed. I paused near the guard, and the guy behind me stopped a bit near the gate. The guard had no clue, but the guy and I ended up laughing because he was only jogging, and I got scared for no reason.

Well, I have reasons to be scared, but the thing is, that fright comes from the imagination. Being cautious from the fear instilled by news near me. (White van kidnapping, rape and murder, cat calling on public, sexual harassment on public, etc). How I acted comes from thinking, "If you killed someone thinking you're defending yourself and ended up killing the wrong person, you're the bad guy." I didn't scream. I tried to keep my composure despite being terrified. I was quiet and had adrenaline to run towards somewhere safer. I could be right, or I could be wrong, but at least if I was wrong to assume that he's not a threat, I know that there's someone who could've witnessed the event.

The takeaway here, the lady didn't have to do that. Granted that she had some reasons to be afraid, there are a bunch of things that she could've done before that. She did what she thought was right, but it was proven wrong. I hope OP pressed charges, and I hope the justice system recognizes that as assault.

I (24y male) really wish that there was a better way to communicate both personal safety and accepting community between genders as part of the child upbringing process. I don’t mean for that to be an offensive sort of statement in any way, but I can already hear criticism to that sort of thinking. “Why should girls also have to be taught to respect men as they grow up? They’re already under the pressure to learn so many other important lessons! Maybe men should stop giving girls reasons not to respect them and reasons to fear them instead!” To some people, both male and female, my opinion on changing the ways boys and girls are raised in order to help foster a better society and acceptance in the future seems to come off as a direct attack on girls, women, and particularly mothers. I don’t know why this is. My hope is that our future generations might be taught that there is evil in the world and that there are ways to prepare for that evil healthily, the way one prepares to drive on the freeway for the first time. Simply because danger exists doesn’t mean that we should teach all the ways to live life in constant fear of it. In response to this story about the woman and a jogger behind her, I do believe that the woman has the right to feel genuine fear being alone at night and hearing someone coming up swiftly behind her. I do also think that she is entitled to act on that fear, because it should be everyone’s right to feel emotions and choose how to act on them, even if the emotion is negative like fear or anger. But perhaps if there was a better way of teaching how to respond to fear, or even a better way to teach ways to respond to actual danger scenarios, would have been helpful. This woman correctly executed every lesson she learned on meeting an attacker late at night. Is it impossible for us to take that sort of learning success, and sort of course-correct towards a better way of differentiating handling what might be an attacker from what might be an innocent jogger?

This is a very difficult situation to comprehend. Let me try to break down my thoughts before judgement.

A man was assaulted while recreating in a public place. This is wrong? Yes.

The person who assaulted the man was a woman. Does this make this right? No.

I’m trying to put myself in the woman’s shoes. I live in Canada. We can’t carry guns, knives, or anything to protect ourselves against attackers. I have a huge problem with this, but until I finish my education and am able to move down south, this is what I have to deal with.

I’m putting myself in my partners shoes. She’s 5’2, 120lbs. While she is extremely fit, competes in martial arts professionally, and competent to defend herself, I, at 6’3, 210lbs, with absolutely no martial arts training, can overpower her just due to my size and strength.

As dumb and insecure as I am, as a large male, I would absolutely be on guard if I heard someone running towards me on a dark night.

I don’t care how small you are, how strong, or how well trained you are, the size of your attacker absolutely does matter. I’m almost twice my partners size, and I can easily over power her just by the sheer weight of my existence, even though she’s a world champion martial artist.

Does this make the female in question right to pepper spray a random jogger? No.

But how do we draw the line? Men and woman are different. Physically, and mentally. We don’t understand eachother.

If I were to hear somebody run up on me, I would absolutely be on guard to defend myself. A split second is all that it takes between life and death. 99% of the population isn’t prepared to do deal with direct threats, so what do we expect them to do? Especially in countries that don’t allow their people to defend themselves legally.

I hate situations like these because I empathize with the traumatic past angle a bit. However, if you aren’t capable of being out in public where uncertainty lies within every vehicle, human, bird crap falling from the sky, stay your ass at home or get some damn help.

Sorry this happened to you man, I’d definitely pursue it whatever way you can though, save the next innocent guy from getting straight up assaulted for being a male.

You shouldn’t have gotten pepper sprayed for jogging at night. But at the same time, if I’m jogging late at night and see a woman on their own, I just cross the road and jog on the other side to avoid stressing her out. Even walking home at night I do this naturally. It makes no difference to me and someone doesn’t feel like they are in any danger. It also means I won’t get pepper sprayed.

I'm a guy, and I don't fully agree with the guy's actions either. He didn't do anything wrong, but how was the woman supposed to know that he was just going for a jog? If I was out late at night and I saw someone running towards me I'd be terrified too. It's an odd occurence to see someone out running at night, I see why the woman took action instead of waiting to see what the guy would do. I wouldn't want to take that risk either.

If I were in that guy's shoes, I'd have just crossed the street once I saw her. I do that all the time when I'm out walking even during the day, and I'd 100% do it at night.

edit: So I'm getting downvoted. To the people who disagree with me, do you not see where I'm coming from? Tell me how you'd react if it you were walking home at 10pm and somebody literally starts running up behind you.

I personally wouldn't have attacked or pepper sprayed the guy, but I'd definitely be scared, and I'd probably like run out of the way or something. But do you not understand how much scarier it is for a woman in that scenario? If you're a guy getting followed at night, you can run or fight back, but a woman in that scenario is usually pretty fucked.
