Jonah handled it perfectly from the looks of it. He didn't once insult her, didn't even really demand anything. He just said something along the lines of "these are my standards, if that's not ok for you, we should go our separate ways".

People are outraged, because apparently in the west the concept of woman's loyalty is inconceivable.

And don't even try the "wHy DoN't yOu TrUsT hEr?!" bs. Trust needs to be earned. If you are committed, if you respect and value your man, you won't even put yourself in a situation where you could cheat. You shouldn't be looking for other men's attention. (and before you guys fly off the rails, I apply the same to men in vice versa).

But at the same time why did he date someone who from the start, didn’t meet these standards he wanted?

She was already modelling in swimsuits when he met her. She wasn’t hiding her lifestyle from him. If it was that important to him then he shouldn’t have dated her at all.

But let’s be real, he was attracted to what she was putting out there. It’s like a guy being attracted to a lingerie model, meeting her, dating her, then wanting her to stop modelling lingerie.

He knew where the bus was going when he got on but he wanted to change destinations and it doesn’t work that way.

To add, I also feel like many women in the media are treating this like a “me too” situation. Not regarding sexual assault but since one woman said something negative about him, the media is looking for anyone else who has something negative to say about Jonah so they can run with that story. As if they have to come to her defense on a weak story.

The only place where Jonah fucked up was him letting it get to a point where his insecurity led him to feel that he had to lay out boundaries and all that in the first place. If the woman you are with does not take it upon herself to become more lowkey for the sake of the relationship, it is already fucked. If a man has to tell her, its not gonna end well

The great majority of people assume that certain behaviors, like surrounding oneself with the opposite sex, will change to some degree when they go from single to in a relationship. If that doesn't happen it's fair game to reaffirm that those are your boundaries, and the other person can respond if they're cool with the compromise or not. I don't know any healthy relationship that doesn't have some amount of compromise, which by definition is asking for a concession in response to a demand.

He can leave any time he wants. He has his preferences. Unfortunately, his preferences would be unreasonable to most women.

I don't know one woman who would happily let her man decide when and where she sees her female friends. Maybe male, but female? She would be walking on tiptoes to make sure her interactions with others wouldn't piss him off. That's no way to live.

There's a reason why one of the signs of domestic abuse is isolation from your friends and family. If you have no one else to lean on, you have to lean on your SO, which creates a bad power dynamic.

And does he hold these standards for himself? Is she allowed to decide when are where he meets his friends and colleagues? Why would anyone want that?

All this + really bad communication style is what is most off-putting to me. They are much better without each other.

I just broke up with a guy I really loved over a lifestyle incompatibility and that is sure the fuck not how I handled it.

These arguments have been had a million times already, people give different takes on whether the things he said were appropriate. If I said that type of stuff to my SO when we broke things off his friends and family probably would've called me a toxic/controlling bitch he was better off without anyway and rightfully so.

What he did was better than remaining in the relationship, but he shouldn’t have started a relationship with someone who clearly had a lifestyle he didn’t approve of in the first place. That’s why he’s being criticized. Especially because he specifically slid into her DMs because he liked pics of her surfing and on the beach. It’s not like he hit up a woman with pics of her cooking in a house dress who then started posting bikini shots. It’s the whole “don’t go into a relationship expecting them to change” thing. If this were a famous woman who hit up a hot surfer dude and then pulled this, you guys would be tearing her to shreds for wanting “chad” to turn into a nice househusband.

No, he threw a tantrum that she wasn't complying, criticized her when he felt her attempts to comply weren't sufficient, put his issues on her, insulted her profession, and then left. If he has simply said, "this is my issue and it's not fair to make it your problem, so I think we should break up," nobody would have had a problem.

Jonah Hill has become the latest "men are criticized for their preferences" motte and bailey.

It makes sense that she’s hurt and people do dumb shit when they’re hurt, but this is pretty trashy on her part. I hope she snaps out of it soon and apologizes and just moves on.

On another point though I agree it’s annoying when a guy you’re not even dating dumps all his problems onto you, but she could’ve just told him to stop or not engaged much. They both seem like they need to be a little more responsible.
