I’d be open to it. Socially especially I am beginning to see more and more meaninglessness to the role enforcing gender plays, whether it be legally or socially. I truly believe that gendering, as far as socialization goes, does bring a larger harm as far as enforcement (and this applies to everyone. The whole pink = girl, blue = boy enforcement from birth is iffy) and imo we would be better off if everyone was given the space to figure out what gender means to them. Most will remain cis and straight, which is totally fine and tbh also welcomed long as it is a chosen position from what one intrinsically feels rather than a result of social enforcement

Also speaking personally, if society was less gendered I would’ve been able to figure out my own gender identity sooner without the layers of shame - and I know lots of trans and/or gender non conforming folk land somewhere similarly. I think a post gender society removed that shame and give space for exploration

I'm a postgenderist so ofc lol. I feel like gender has historically been a reason to oppress people; specifically those who aren't endocishet men. True gender equality would only happen if we can achieve a society like that, imo.

I'd say yes because I'm genderqueer, but also, a lot of people do enjoy their gender - some women do like being graceful pretty girls and some men do like being big buff guys. Hell, even gender non conforming people can enjoy the fact that they are subversing gender roles.

Forcing them all to be agender would just give them gender dysphoria, or accidentally reinvent some kind of weird gender/social division. It's probably better (and more doable) to acknowledge gender norms, while still allowing people to express themselves however they want.

Definitely sign me up for the first, and I only hesitate on the second because I'd want to know the details of the tech involved.

I largely consider myself agender. No problems with having a female body, and I like sex but I don't have much in the way of a female gender identity. (And with the body, I wish mine was more androgynous. I've long made peace with it.) To the extent that I identify as a woman, it's because a lot of women have had to deal with similar bullshit because we're all women.

I really can't separate this question from my own life. There's a pretty common question in the trans community: if you could push a button and instantly become the other gender, would you press it? This feels like a variation of that, and for me the answer is an obvious yes.

Let's fucking get rid of gender norms. Let's get rid of gendered expectations. Let kids grow into whoever they are instead of forcing them into arbitrary boxes.

Hell, we can already move in that direction. Let kids socially transition if that's what they want, and if puberty becomes an issue, use puberty blockers at Tanner Stage 2. We're not asking for some radical, medically unproven experiment. We want to protect kids, and trans kids do better when they're accepted, supported, and allowed to transition.

Gender roles are a reflection of cultural expressions of certain biological-based (including gender identities neurological basis, most people being neurologically Neurotypical and Cis-gender) behaviours, to suppress this would be unhealthy, but too enforce it too strongly suppresses the natural similarities we share (as men and women are more similar with our brains than different); most cultures enforce them too restrictively despite some region’s modern Western Progressivist cultural shifts, but they also shouldn’t be forcibly reduced. This is a change that we can make progress-on and I agree with.

Imagine a world where we all had the same genitals or got to pick our genitals and binary sex itself became meaningless. The point here being we're essentially all gender fluid and completely equal. No more being forced to be either male or female.

No, people should not be genetically altered to be neurologically Gender-neutral and Sex-neutral at birth before they can make a choice, but continue the current practice of naturally-born people live as their Assigned Sex, and then may decide at age 16 (Australian age of consent) if they undergo a legal therapy and medication process before Gender Transition as a later treatment if deemed necessary, including if Science achieves full genetic sex changes.

Very much yes, I suspect this would be a good north star objective for feminist advocacy, given that the most consistent definition of feminism appears to me to be "abolition of the institutions and norms which emanate from patriarchal dynamics" (including rigid gender archetypes).

This sounds a bit sci-fi. Luckily, we already can alter biological sex characteristics through various procedures; I doubt that expanding flexibility beyond that is an urgent priority (although I'm not trans so I can't say that definitively). Normative / institutionalised gendering seems to be the more prescient obstacle to focus on, to me - maybe we can discuss and consider the whole sci-fi-genetic-modification-of-human-biology thing after we solve the more pressing issue, if we get time?

Seems a moot question. I see no way to eliminate gender roles or expectations without some highly dystopian technology nightmare scenario.

So we live in the world we live in. Pretending we can eliminate gender roles when we cannot ends up in a mess since no real control or balancing of the roles that persist. OTOH I definitely don't want the most extreme gender roles human societies have produced, either. Looking for roles that work and where overall each gender feels treated fairly.

I want gender roles gone. People can simply be themselves without needing to force themselves into particular preset archetypes on the basis of arbitrary factors they are born with. I don't care how cringe folks think the woke 2010s era perspectives on "get rid of gender roles, just have bread rolls!" were, I think they were 100% correct and far better than the shit today where it's either traditionalist arguments for gender roles or, increasingly, some weird reactionary feminist/"sacred masculine and feminine" woo that basically just seeks to come up with vaguely progressive sounding ways to argue why gender roles are actually still good anyway

The second option is far more alien and speculative but I don't think it would be terrible

Patriarchal “traditional” gender roles are how capitalists control the working class.

Capitalism creates artificial scarcity so capitalists can hijack working-class men’s survival and reproductive drives, in order to exploit them for their productive labour. Men are made to compete as individuals, and the ones who dominate are rewarded with status, resources, and access to women.

They externalize the costs of maintaining and reproducing the workforce to women through their unpaid domestic, care, community, and reproductive labour.

If women had free choice, they would not necessarily choose the richest, most dominant, or hardest working man. They might even choose to remain single or have a female partner. Or maybe they would just live in a big group of women and children.

But if you limit women’s access to resources so that she must be economically dependent on a man for her survival, remove her from her kin in order to join her husband’s family, take away her control over her own reproduction, isolate her in the nuclear family, keep her uneducated, etc. then you can ensure that most men will be rewarded with a wife appliance. The working-class men will accept their subjugation, as long as they have a wife to subjugate; one who will take care of all his domestic, care, community, and sexual needs… and bear snd raise his children so that he will leave a “legacy”.

Girls/women and boys/men are conditioned to fulfill their prescribed gender roles, but the reality is that people don’t fit neatly into a gender binary, and trying to force them into that binary is harmful. The roles themselves are harmful to people.

Also, because girls/women and boys/men are conditioned to pay attention to different things, it makes it difficult for men and women to communicate. We often talk past each other because our perspectives are so different. Not only that, but men are taught that women are inferior to them, less intelligent, less logical, overly emotional, etc., so a man can easily dismiss women’s perspectives if they don’t align with his own.

Capitalist benefit from keeping the working-class divided (on gender, race, immigration status, etc.), because they know that our power comes from our numbers, our ability to organize, and our ability to act in solidarity with one another.

I would like to live in a post-gender society, because gender is used to oppress people and I would prefer to live in a world without oppression. I think people should be free to express themselves and chart their own path in life. Gendered socialization prevents us from becoming well-rounded people, and from developing deep, meaningful, and healthy relationships with each other. People who cling to “traditional” gender roles are taking the blue pill. They are choosing to go back to sleep and remain a wage slave, while the wealthy and corporations funnel wealth from the bottom to the top, leaving the rest of us to fight over the scraps.

Like, the world is on fire and society is collapsing as a result of patriarchal colonial capitalism, and yet men believe that feminism is the problem. Gender has blinded men to reality and allowed them to other us and oppress us. We’d be much better off without it, imo.

I'm not sure how much that will even matter to those who understand the birds and the bees....who cares about whether or not you live up to gender roles if you feel entitled to sex anyway. I think the crux of the argument for most people is how unrealistic it is to act as if gender doesn’t exist. The picture you’ve painted is a sci-fi ideal with untold numbers of implications. I think either of those futures are very alien. So obviously, I wouldn’t be happy and comfortable in either one. I think the people that would are probably on some sort of medication or just not thinking about all the negatives. Maybe after a thousand years of slowly moving that direction. But not being dropped into it now.

I am being selfish with my answer:

No. It took me too long to be comfortable with my gender identity as a woman to say I want to get rid of it. I enjoy dressing feminine. I enjoy "girly" things and expressing my gender in a way that is seen as positive by society.

I do wish gender norms weren't as strict as they are. Especially for men. But I also like when men dress in suits and show off their manly bodies. I also like when women wear things that are gender conformative. I like when pretty women wear sundresses. I don't know if I would be attracted to men wearing sundresses. I wish they could do that if they wanted to since women can wear suits. I might find it aesthetically pleasing but I probably wouldn't be attracted to it because my views are shaped by a gender conforming society.

Okay maybe I don't really care about gender roles but more of gender aesthetics 🤔 Because I don't care if women or men conform mentally to what would be described as "feminine" and "masculine". Because I think the mental and personality aspect includes everything human. None of the things that are historically assigned to men and women as personality seem to be as rigid to me.

So maybe I just like the gender aesthetics. Gender as a visual expression.
