Honestly, it's up to you to make the first move. Guys are more aware that gyms are not optimal for any sort of chatting with women. I had a girl do the exact same things you speak of, follow me around, use equipment next to mine, even mimic the exercises I was doing. I went to the mats to cool down/stretch, to which she followed. I made a quick, witty remark that "it gets more difficult to come to the gym as the weather gets colder", as it was the beginning of winter. She scoffed at me, and walked away.

Talk to him. Don't expect him to start the convo if you're the one interested to the point of following him around. Gyms are one of the places where many guys refuse to approach women because women often state that they want to be left alone while working out, and fair enough. I will rarely ever approach a woman at the gym because I don't want to be seen as a creep or bother women who are just trying to work out. I've seen many posts from women talking about how they had to leave the gym and quit their workout early because guys are creeping on them.

I suggest you ask him for advice on an exercise you're doing or ask him to spot you. The best time to approach would be when he's resting between sets or before or after a workout. Generally speaking, most people don't like to be interrupted when they're working out so you're going to need to choose a good time to approach and a good reason too.

Also regarding the following around thing, I won't judge you because we're not here to do that but here's what I will say to men and women. When you try to hide your intentions, that's when you're creepy. If he notices what you're doing then you could (and probably are) coming across as creepy and demonstrating other red flags.

The best thing you can do is to approach him now or stop. If he calls you on it then admit to it. I think everyone has had the experience of liking someone and wanting to approach but not knowing what to say so if you admit to it (only if he calls you on it) then it probably will work. He will probably laugh and it will come across as innocent and honest in a refreshing way. In a good way. It's the only move you have if he catches you. If you try anything else then won't work well and he will probably think you're needy, clingy, obsessive and other things you wouldn't want him to think about you.

I recommend this to men too if you ever get caught doing something similar. Just call yourself on it. Women understand, but with that being said, don't follow people. It doesn't work and it will most likely lead to the person being scared, the police getting called or a restraining order. Make your move or move on.

If he rejects the opportunity to be with you then stop following because that's when you enter "stalker territory" and you could and probably will be kicked out of the gym.

It takes an incredible amount of courage for a guy to approach a girl at the gym. The risk of public rejection combined and potential awkwardness of seeing you regularly after you’ve rejected him makes it not worth it in most guys minds.

I know girls don’t ever hit on guys but if you could break the mould and go for it, it would make things a lot easier. Between sets just say “Hey. I’m ____.” He’ll likely take it from there.

Otherwise just make it extremely obvious that you want him to approach you - give him some eye contact and a smile. If he’s brave enough he’ll come over.

Im a regular and I will catch people looking at me and sometimes following me even if it doesnt make sense in their own workouts or if they are a regular and I see them changing their workout to do something near my corner of the gym.

I don't go up to women in the gym. All the guys are already staring and watching them, so I make it a point to do my work and leave (aside from my own gym crush whom I stay for but don't approach cause we both seem to like doing our workouts and then leaving and I like that push/motivation). But, I'm not opposed to women coming up to me. It's happened rarely but the girls that come up to me are the ones I remember. As a woman you're already getting eyes at the gym so if you came up to me innocently, I wouldn't think youre interested unless you outright told me or asked for my number. But this is because I'm a regular and it will depend on your crush.

For example theres a girl that asked me for a cable attachment that she had three of already on her equipment. I didn't notice till way after but stuff like that will go unnoticed by guys like myself. Sorry, but I'm not at the gym to pick up on signals.

As far as I know, there’s a pretty big stigma that the gym isn’t a good place for men to approach women. It may be the same the other way around as well, but I can only speak from my experience. I’m going to go out on a limb and say, it might be more appropriate for you to approach him instead of waiting for him to approach you, because men are usually conceived as being “creeps” when we approach women at the gym. Also, what everyone else said, you should just be direct if you’re interested. Don’t wait around for someone to come to you. We’re all just humans at the end of the day.

As far as how to approach a guy? I'd probably make an excuse to ask him if he's using a certain machine or weight to make eye contact with the guy. Then try to meet him outside as he is going to his car to exchange numbers. Just so you don't have to feel embarrassed inside the gym and he's on his way out so the banter is short lived. After that, he has your number, so the ball is in his court now.
