I get why they do it. It's soft power. Influence and money. Validation.

It's not empowering for everyone. I'd say well over half of the women who sexualize themselves feel a conflict about it.

The thing about soft power is that it relies on everyone's perception of you, and that can change in an instant. So however 'empowering' it might be in the moment, people can turn on you.

Women have been doing this since social media has existed. Getting worked up and bothered about it is energy I have no interest in spending, though I do have a fleeting wish they would do something to value themselves beyond their looks. I hope I’m raising my daughter to find her value in places other than internet points.

Whether it’s empowering or not it’ll depend on the individual. I’d assume many women will feel an internal conflict around it. As someone who’s done theatre and film, I’m aware and familiar with hypersexualization of women; to what extent I hate it (or not) is a constant internal battle I have.

Personally, I don’t understand the meaning of social media in that sense tho. I have Instagram but it’s locked and that’s about it. My view is that if you want to put yourself out there, at least sell it. If all you can get is validation it’s prob not worth it.

It's hard for me to know how to feel. I hate the hypersexualization of women, but I know I hate it a lot more than other women and of course a thousand times more than most men.

But then on the other hand, I see how happy so many women are to do it and I see so many men's complaints being basically a resentment of women doing what men have been doing to them for hundreds of years. So I don't know if it's spiteful of me to have little sympathy over their resentment or what.

Then, the main caution is the "nobody will like you if they find out" one, which is basically a refined version of the slut objection and I have my doubts that in 10 years anyone is going to care anyway.

I can't get my brain around a form of social equalization like this one. Taking a mostly bad thing men have been doing to women and turning it into something safe and acceptable for women. Which would then makes it "good". Maybe.

Young women sexualize themselves on social media because their are benefits to doing so. They get female and male attention, and most importantly they can financially benefit from doing so. Sell products to women and have men throw money at them for very little work.

I definitely feel like it’s empowering if it makes you feel empowered. Hell even having the option to do such things is powerful. There are a lot of places in this world where that is not acceptable yet.

My daughter can do whatever she wants to with her body. Sure me and her mother created her but she has her own life to live and all I ask is that she loves herself, respects others, doesn’t purposely harm others, and know that ima have her back no matter what.

It's rampant and it's not just young girls. My ex wife and her friends are all mid to late forties on Facebook and Instagram every day with their books half out and in the front or asses out in the rear. They get lots of attention from thirsty men and they love it. As a result their sense of entitlement and self worth is ridiculously inflated. They date lots of men but never for too long. Their looks are starting to go with age so they resort to all types of ridiculous apps and filters to mask this. Some of them look nothing like their social media pics in person. A lot of them got both and their lips and cheeks are so puffed they look like that singer the weekend. At any rate people are free to do what they want, but when your whole existence is based on feeding your ego with social media validation based solely on your looks which are a depreciating commodity you're in for a big fall one day. Also, with soo many people of all ages walking around with a hyper inflated sense of self worth dating becomes much harder as everyone thinks they're too good for everyone else.

Men have enjoyed the ability to accrue their own wealth for many more years than women. So it is only natural that women will use their privilege (sexualising themselves) to get what they want (money) from men.

Thats what it boils down to ultimately. If they have 1000 likes or 100k likes then just want money. The person on 1k likes is hoping that someone wealthy will see them and lust over them and maybe she can get his money by getting in a relationship with him. The 100k likes person is either running an OF, or a modelling career, or gets paid to be a model on a yacht or a sporting event or promotional magazine.

If you look any deeper into it than "women uses body to get money from men" then you're missing the point. If it wasn't an easy way to get money, women wouldn't do it. In 100 years when women genuinely do have equal opportunities to men in the professional world, you will find a lot more young men showing off their bodies on IG looking for sugar mummies.

I figure like most things it's good for some people and harmful for others. If I knew people doing it I would focus on the effect it was having on them over the content they are making.

I can actually speak for myself here in that I was around 18 when I started posting sexualised content online. (Which subsequently turned into a career for me).

It felt INCREDIBLY empowering to me, as someone who grew up religious & around friends and family who would constantly demonise any ounce of sexuality. I was a very sexually repressed person due to that religious upbringing, despite being painfully horny, and I felt so much shame in being a sexual woman that I needed to hide it, for the sake of those pearl clutching people. Coming out of that, and being able to express myself sexually, literally felt like I was on top of the world. It gave me a new spark of confidence, and I’m able to indulge in my kinks that I otherwise wouldn’t really be able to. It has undeniably been a positive thing for me, but that’s just me.

I’m not really concerned with what young adults choose to do with their bodies, if they enjoy it and find it empowering then good for them! but I personally do discourage anyone who wants to jump the bandwagon over to sex work. Simply because I feel that online sex work has a reputation for being easy quick money, when it’s not. And when it’s framed like that, people go into it with the wrong mindset, and are very unprepared on what to expect and how to succeed, which I think in the long run can end badly for them.

But if they’re just posting regular ol thirst traps on their social media then heck yeah go for it, I like looking at insta butts too.

There have always been women sexualizing themselves and I don't see why social media is any different. It's not my style, but people make of it a bigger problem then it actually is. It's up to individual women doing it to decide whether it's empowering, sad or business as usual.

Some women pointed out to the lack of power or respect this pics might lead to. While I agree, I find it troublesome that men post shirtless pics all the time without getting accused of sexualizing themselves. The fact that only women lose respect with this kind of picture tells me there are bigger issues with how women are perceived in our society than sexualization itself.

I don't have a good view of it. Social media was already controversial enough when facebook first came out, if anyone posted a selfie back then there'd be choruses of 'yikes' type reactions. It was understood that being liked is a normal human desire, but to shamelessly beg for it via selfies was like announcing on a megaphone how little self esteem a person had. Of course, the act is prevalent because it achieves what it sets out to do.

I worry that my kids will grow up thinking this is in any way normal, and by that I mean healthy, but who am I to tell people how to live their life? No skin off my nose. They'll either like it or learn from it.

Is it empowering? Is throwing your gender under the bus to save your own skin really supposed to be for a group's benefit?

Hmmm this is a tough question. I am all for women doing it if they feel empowered and don't need the validation of the internet masses. However, I really have to wonder how many of them are doing it for themselves Vs for the external validation. Because if it was for yourself, would you really post it online? How many of these women are watching the likes roll in and it is that what makes them feel good, as opposed to putting themselves out there? Is it the validation that makes them feel empowered or their love for themselves? And how can we really tell they are being honest, because who really wants to say "yes it's the external validation and the likes that makes me feel good".

I feel like it is similar to the plastic surgery debate. I feel like nowadays plastic surgery has been "repackaged" as something empowering for women. E.g. "you go girl! nothing is stopping you looking like you have always dreamed of!" When really we should be focusing on loving each woman for their uniqueness, not working towards one unachievable "model" of what is attractive (which generally changes every decade or so depending on celebrity culture) I've heard people say plastic surgery is literally just women moving towards what is attractive to the male gaze, but has been repackaged by us women in a way we can now say it's empowering. Almost like justifying it in a way that (imho) is not the total truth. Yes you may love yourself more afterwards which is great, but why were you not enough in the first place? Isn't it so much more empowering to love yourself, your body and your looks for who you really are, and not giving a shit about what society says is attractive? (Not saying I have achieved this myself, but to me this is the goal!) I know people who have had plastic surgery and what lies beneath is deep and crippling insecurity.

No hate on anybody and their own choices, but I think it's so easy to use "female empowerment" for sexualisation/plastic surgery when really is the goal not just to appeal to the male gaze? I'll be honest I have thought about getting a breast lift because I don't like how my boobs look. But that is insecurity, there's nothing empowering about it. I'd much rather love me how I am now and I'm hoping to get there. Getting a boob job would merely be a plaster on the problem, which is lack of self love. (Which may be why I view sexualisation/plastic surgery in this way!)
